Cartoombria 7th International Animation Exhibition
Cartoombria showcases animation from around the world, with a focus on digital and multimedia animation. The festival also holds special events highlighting international schools and training programs on computer animation, new media and Web animation.

The 3rd European Gathering of Young Digital Creation
The 3rd European Gathering of Young Digital Creation is focused on digital art from animation to special effects. Some of the themes of this year's event will be animation and special effects in feature films, sound in cinema and multimedia and royalties. The festival includes training symposiums, screenings and discussions. Guest speakers will include Raoul Servais, creator of KIRIKOU Michel Ocelot and co-director of Axis, Chris Delaporte.

An Evening of Diversions - Featuring intriguing amusements inspired by the Devices of Wonder exhibition, An Evening of Diversions invites audiences to step back in time 100 years, when the new century offered mind-boggling technological advancements. Produced by Community Arts Resources, the evening features cinema's first frames, a magic lantern show and other acts of wonder that amazed the public in 1901. No reservations required. At the J. Devices of Wonder: From the World in a Box to Images on a Screen
Through nearly 400 objects from the 17th century to the present, Devices of Wonder explores our long and playful entanglement with the magical technologies and artful instruments that we have placed between our eyes and the world. Centuries before the advent of cyberspace, humans created a host of gadgets to enhance visual perception. Mirrors, microscopes, magic lanterns, automata, dioramas, panoramas, perspective theaters and metamorphic toys have all expanded human perception at different times, amplifying reality into more vivid virtual events.

ARTimation Festival
On Wednesday, October 17th 2001, The Illinois Institute of Art-Schaumburg will host the second annual ARTimation Festival at the AMC Barrington 30 Theatres, 175 Studio Drive from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. There will be two theatres devoted to the showing of Animation and Multimedia programs.
ILM Director Tom Bertino In Person and A Tribute to Billy Greene
ASIFA-San Francisco presents an evening with ILM Director Tom Bertino. Tom is currently working as animation director for DreamWorks "The Time Machine" He joined ILM in 1986 and has worked on over 40 features. Tom's experimental digital animated 35mm short "Work In Progress" will be screened and he will discuss his latest projects. Sally Cruickshank's "Make Me Psychic" will also be shown. Tom did ink and paint on this film and it was his first professional job.

After Effects West Conference
After Effects West is the world's first conference in Adobe After Effects 5.0 software. This three-day event will feature top artists, professionals and educators in the motion-graphics industry. An Adobe After Effects Film Festival is featured at the event that showcases the best After Effects work from ResFest, MOtion GRAphics, Critic's Choice (top professional work) and Student Films. After Effects West is hosted by lynda.com, the co-creators of the flashforward conferences.
Vancouver Film School Presentation at Siggraph
The Vancouver Film School presents a seminar on "Careers in 3D Animation" at SIGGRAPH 2001. The free seminar will be held on the SIGGRAPH exhibition floor on Thursday August 16 from 10 to noon. Graeme Gish, director of programming - New Media and Animation Studies - will be the speaker. The session includes a screening of student work, a comprehensive overview of the Vancouver Film School's 3D Animation programs, a discussion of career opportunities and a question and answer period.
SIGGRAPH 2001
SIGGRAPH is the foremost conference and exhibition of visual effects and interactive technology. The event offers scientific papers, panels, courses, educational programs and informal presentations from researchers, artists, animators and engineers. The exhibition presents all the software, hardware and services that are hot in the computer graphics field. The computer animation festival highlights the year's best films and video artists.
Alias|Wavefront Siggraph User Group Meeting at SIGGRAPH 2001
The AWGUA Freak Show will take place at the Orpheum Theatre, 842 South Broadway, Los Angeles, on Monday, 9:30 am - 6:00 pm. The Fun House party will begin at 7:00 pm. The AWGUA conference seminars will be held at the Westin Bonaventure, 404 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, Monday through Wednesday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Featured speakers include: Duncan Brinsmead and Jos Stam, Alias|Wavefront, presenting the "Two-Headed Genius" and other acts of scientific research; and Square Pictures, highlighting their first film, "Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within."
Side Effects' SIGGRAPH 2001 Houdini Training Seminar
Side Effects Software will host a free seminar at SIGGRAPH 2001 to address increasing worldwide demand for Houdini skills and Certified Houdini Trainers. The event will appeal to school staff with plans to expand their 3D animation offerings and trainers interested in augmenting their existing skill set to take advantage of employment opportunities.
Vancouver Film School Presentation
The Vancouver Film School (VFS) is holding a three hour presentation that includes detailed descriptions of their classical, 3D and Maya programs. Student works will be shown and portfolios will be reviewed. The presentation will be held at the Sheraton Pasadena Hotel, 303 East Cordova Street, Pasadena, on Saturday, August 11 from 2-4pm. The 22nd Annual International Monitor Awards
The 22nd Annual International Monitor Awards were established by the Association of Imaging Technology and Sound to showcase the best in electronic production, post-production and digital media. The nine craft areas are editor, visual effects, graphic design, 3D animation, color correction, sound design, audio mixing, original scoring and best achievement. The event accepts entries from film, television, shorts, PSAs, music videos and interactive media.
Vancouver Film School US Roadshow
Join the Vancouver Film School (VFS) for a presentation of their 3D, classical and Maya programs; see award-winning student work; bring your portfolio for review and meet the roadshow team. The 8th Edition Of The Festival Synthesis
The 8th Edition of the Festival Synthesis is a festival dedicated to CG movies and animations. Last year the event had 10,000 visitors. This year's Synthesis will feature a retrospective on the work of ILM. The event will also include screenings, discussions, company presentations and product demos.
Dusty Film Festival Awards
The Dusty Film Festival Awards is an annual ceremony to celebrate the top-graduating seniors in film, video and computer animation at the School of Visual Arts. This year the event will be held at the Zeigfeld Theater. Approximately 1200 people will attend the event, including many people soon to be looking for employment in creative fields. This year, the festival includes three days of continuous screenings (May 14-16) leading up to the special activities on May 17.
Presentation Of C.O.R.E. Digital
Side Effects Software will present the X-MEN work completed by C.O.R.E. Digital on Thursday, May 10, 2001 at 6 pm at University of Toronto's Hart House. Nordin Rahhali, who served as a technical director on X-MEN, will discuss C.O.R.E.'s work on the film, including early challenges and Houdini's role in overcoming them. Side Effects will also present new Houdini capabilities, including its artist-friendly interface, customizable panels and vector expressions and the integrated Houdini scripting language.
Fantasm 2001
Fantasm 2001 is a leading multimedia science-fiction, fantasy, horror, art, film and gaming convention. Foundation Imaging's computer animation wizard, Mojo, will be on hand to discuss his work on the TV series BABYLON 5, STAR TREK: VOYAGER and STARSHIP TROOPERS. Visitors can bring their demo tapes and questions on how to break into the computer animation business.
