As advances in photorealism and realtime display race ahead, we can begin to wonder further. Will digital imagery eventually immerse and transport us to a holographic, alternate phantasm? Let's turn an examining light on this energetic, unselfconscious quest.

ACM SIGGRAPH L.A. Chapter January Meeting

Begins: January 14, 2003

The January 14 Web meeting will focus on the implementation of Flash in 2d and 3d applications for the web and wireless devices. Studies conducted by Macromedia and other sources state that the Flash plugin is used by 90% of all webusers. Flash is currently used for website creation, adding 3d capabilities (via plugins), entertainment (both tv and movies), wireless devices for the web and more. We will also present alternate technologies, including those that are working toward Flash compatibility for the future.

The Big Issue International Film Festival 2002 (Australia)

Aspiring Spielbergs! Here's your chance to show your film in major cinemas around Australia and the UK and at the same time raise money for The Big Issue who help the homeless and unemployed. The Festival is being held in November at Sydney's Valhalla, Melbourne's Cinema Nova, the Judith Wright Centre in Brisbane, Mercury cinema in Adelaide and the North of the UK for the sister festivals. There are 4 categories of entry:- Animation, Documentary, General and Novice.

The Communicator Awards is an international competition for Video/Film & Multi-media founded by communications professionals to recognize excellence in the communications field. Entries will be judged against a high standard of excellence rather than each other. Excellence, Distinction and Honorable Mention winners receive a foiled and printed certificate. Excellence and Distinction winners are eligible to order the Prestigious crystal jade glass award. The Communicator Awards has over 200 categories. Entry fees are $40 per entry.

Discreet combustion One-Day Workshops

This hands-on workshop is designed to give you a solid overview of combustion 2. Produced by Dhima, the Discreet Training Center for combustion, this project-based overview will cover the many benefits of combustion including integrated vector paint, artist user interface, powerful text, 2d particles and 3d compositing. Also included will be combustion's award-winning keying, tracking, color correction and film tools originally developed for flame. This workshop is the first step to effectively using combustion 2 in your pipeline to create stunning visual effects.

Call for Entries for the IFP/CHICAGO Flyover Zone Short Film Festival. Flyover Zone: Name given to that area of the United States between New York and Los Angeles often viewed by industry executives from 35,000 feet above the earth. Chosen films will be screened at the 11th Annual IFP/Chicago Independent Filmmaker's Conference which will take place from November 8-9, 2002 in Chicago, Illinois. Eligible films must be 30 minutes or less in the categories of Student Films, Comedy Shorts, Dramatic, Non-Fiction, and Experimental Shorts.
