The DIY Convention

Begins: November 2, 2002

The DIY Convention: Do It Yourself in Film, Music & Books is a one-day event on creating, promoting and distributing independent film, music and books. The event features panels, workshops and exhibits on various aspects of bringing your creative vision to a larger audience. The New York City event is the Saturday programming at the CMJ Music Marathon, now in its 22nd year, and features the DIY Book Festival Awards, honoring the top independent authors and publishers in various categories, including comics.

The Valley Film Festival

Begins: November 1, 2002

More than peaches, porn and pop culture trends, it's the return of the San Fernando Valley's ONLY film festival: The Valley Film Festival. November 1-7 at The El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood.

Over the course of 7 days, we will showcase one short & one feature in the following categories: Comedy, Documentary, Drama, Foreign, Horror/Thriller, Valley-specific and W.I.F. (Women in Film)

Additionally, this year we'll be launching our "Valley: After Midnight" program featuring films reflecting the...racier...side of the 818.

It's A Nightmare! Tim Burton's Animated Films at L.A.'s El Capitan Theater

Ho-ho-horrors! Make no bones about it, Jack Skellington is back-along with some of his monstrously good friends-as The El Capitan Theater a Halloween season triple threat: Tim Burton's stop-motion animation classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas, featuring music by Danny Elfman, along with the rarely seen Tim Burton shorts, Frankenweenie and Vincent.

Montage - dhima's Student Digital Animation Festival

Come and enjoy our screening of student work from the past year. The software used in these animated shorts are: Alias/Wavefront Maya, Discreet combustion 2, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere and Avid. We will have a social hour with an open bar and grub to allow you to get to know the staff and students of dhima. Chicago International Children's Film Festival

Begins: October 24, 2002

CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S FILM FESTIVAL - CALL FOR ENTRIES

Now an Academy-qualifying festival for Short Films!

The largest (and oldest) children's film festival in North America takes place October 24-November 3, 2002 in Chicago. The 19th CICFF, or "Cannes for Kids," invites entries in all categories, including live action and animated features and shorts, television programs and child-produced work for competition judged by child and adult juries, with cash prizes. Winners in the short film category will automatically be submitted to the Short Film

The Chicago International Children's Film Festival

The Chicago International Children's Film Festival (CICFF) is an annual, competitive film festival presented by Facets Multi-Media, Inc. The event is the largest festival of children's films in North America. An adult and children's jury will hand out awards for animated features and shorts. The festival also features a category for child-produced films.

AusFest 2002

AusFest 2002 is the inaugural Australian Digital & Video Film Festival. Films will be selected for screening that successfully tell an entertaining, thought-provoking or moving story, and the audience will be asked to award their favourites.

Categories include:

Features, Shorts, Music Videos, Documentaries, Extreme Sport, Animation and High School.

All submissions are free, and films must have been shot on a digital or video medium.

Animated Documentaries: An Evening with Sheila M. Sofian

AIVF is proud to present an important artist in contemporary media. Sheila M. Sofian is an internationally recognized filmmaker using a unique technique of combining documentary narrative with animated visuals. Her award-winning work has been shown throughout the world in festivals and on television. She is a recent recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and will explore her innovative animation/documentary style. This screening and lecture will discuss her recent works exploring domestic violence, the war in Serbia, as well as other pieces. Ms.

The International Film Market is open to every filmmaker with a focus on films which, due to their country of origin, genre, language, topic or style, tend to be overshadowed at the major film markets in the world, yet they represent relevant cultural, scientific and artistic values. Empire State Film Festival

This is the seventh year Empire State Film Festival will bring the latest and greatest works from around the world to enthusiastic audiences in New York State. We show at The Egg at Empire State Plaza (www.theegg.org), an amazing 900-seat theater in New York's capital city of Albany, followed by an extensive tour throughout the state. Students and emerging filmmakers are highly encouraged to enter.

Something for every hobby and everybody!

Art Seminars - Seminars, as always, will include the ubiquitous and fun cel painting classes! Drawing, modelling, and so forth are planning in various degrees, and Tom Grossman, modeller extraordinaire, will host a 'Make and Take' modelling session where kids under 16 can come and get a model to work on for free! Artist Newton Ewell will also teach special sessions on drawing Characters for Manga and Mecha for Manga. Too cool....
