Florida Media Market's Global Film & Media Conference 2008

Now in its third year, The Florida Media Market is hosting its annual Global Film & Media Conference in Miami Beach, Florida at the Alexander All-Suite Oceanfront Resort from Thursday, October 23 to Sunday, October 26. This international conference will lend for networking, learning, sharing ideas and building new artistic relationships.

A Salute To The National Film Board Of Canada

Celebrating more than 50 years of Oscar-nominated and winning short subjects produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), this salute, hosted by animation critic and historian Charles Solomon, will feature screenings of such outstanding films as NEIGHBOURS (1952), CHRISTMAS CRACKER (1963), BOB'S BIRTHDAY (1993), RYAN (2004) and THE DANISH POET (2006).

A panel discussion will include NFB Chair and Government Film Commissioner Tom Perlmutter, NFB animation producer Marcy Page, and Torill Kove, Oscar winner for THE DANISH POET.

Chicago International Children's Film Festival 2008

Now in its 25th year, The Chicago International Children's Film Festival is the largest and longest-running festival of films for children in the U.S. Last year the festival screened 220 films and videos from 40 countries for audiences of 26,000 children and their families. It is the only Academy Award-qualifying children's festival in the world. Each year the festival scours the globe to present an outstanding selection of the best animation, live-action, experimental and kids-produced films for children ages 2-14. The early entry deadline is May 1 and the final deadline is May 31.

NFB Presents Get Animated! -- Free Screenings Across Canada

October 28 is World Animation Day -- and Canada is getting animated. The National Film Board is celebrating this special day with a 13-city tour of Get Animated!, a series of free public screenings from the NFB's Oscar-winning animation studios.

Get Animated! will showcase new creations from Canada's public producer, for young and old, from October 22 to November 9, 2008. The NFB Web site provides complete details on this event, along with free streaming video of NFB animated shorts, at nfb.ca/getanimated.

ASIFA Student Animation Film Festival 2008

ASIFA-Hollywoods' Animator Educator's Forum is hosting its first Student Animation Film Festival at Woodbury University, located on 7500 Glenoaks Blvd. in Burbank, California 91510 on October 18, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Students enrolled in professional academic programs throughout the United States including NYU Tisch School of the Arts; UCLA; USC; Woodbury University; Loyola Marymount University; CSU Fullerton; Bay and The Art Institute of California-Orange County have submitted short animations.

Toronto After Dark Film Festival

Toronto After Dark Film Festival is one of the world's leading showcases of thrilling international cinema and runs every October, just before Halloween. Special guest Brent Spiner (Data from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION) will perform several songs on his new CD DREAMLAND, while also incorporating a storyline throughout. Also performing songs along with Spiner is Maude Maggart, and Mark Hamill (STAR WARS, BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES) performs several roles in the story. The DREAMLAND CD is $25, including an autograph. Spiner will sign one additional item at his 1-3 p.m. appearance.

Spare Change Gets Canadian Theatrical Run

Ryan Larkin's SPARE CHANGE will have a Canadian theatrical run before the feature film ALL TOGETHER NOW. Co-directed by Laurie Gordon, SPARE CHANGE is a surreal journey through Larkin's own powerful and ultimately liberating imagination. A street beggar, Astral Pan (voiced by Larkin), takes us from the sidewalks of a wintry Montreal day to the gates of heaven and hell and back. The film features original works by Larkin, including character drawings, flip book animations from earlier in his career and several of Larkin's own paintings.

Attention animators! San Diego Asian Film Festival 2008 will once again be showcasing animated short films produced by animators of Asian ethnicities in a 90-minute all-animation program. All forms of animation (traditional, claymation, stop-motion, flash, CGI, etc) will be accepted for consideration into this competitive festival. Films by all animators pertaining to Asian issues and themes will also be considered. Only VHS and DVD (preferred) formats are accepted for consideration.
