Animation historian Jerry Beck will be presenting a retrospective of animator Gene Deitch. The screening will scan Deitch's career from his innovative work at UPA to his independent work in Prague.
The Rochester Institute of Technology will be screening its film and video MFA theses. The February screening will be held on campus at the newly revamped Webb Auditorium at 7 pm. The other date's time and location is yet to be announced.

The American Cinematheque and the World Animation Festival are sponsoring a screening of Czech animator Karel Zeman's work. Zeman's work as an animator and special effects artist stretched from the 1940s to the 1960s. He worked on such films as THE FABULOUS WORLD OF JULES VERNE (1958) and BARON MUNCHAUSEN (1961).

ANIMAC: the International Annual Spanish Animation Show is devoted to promoting the art of animation. The five-year-old event is a joint venture between the School of Fine Arts of Lleida and the Lleida Culture Department. ANIMAC 2001 wants to celebrate the capability of animation to mix with many other artistic disciplines such as music, painting, photography, performances, digital arts, graphic design and others. The event includes film and video screenings, retrospectives and theme screenings.
Jerry Beck presents a lost Japanese animated feature from the 1960s. LITTLE PRINCE AND THE8 HEADED DRAGON. Based on Japanese mythology, a spoiled to his brother at the ocean floor, his sister in the sun and ultimately he rescues a princess from an eight-headed dragon. The film's design, by Yasuji Mori, is unique and angular with full animation. The film was originally released theatrically in Japan in 1963 (under the title WANPAKUOOJI NO OROCHITAIJI) and in the U.S. in 1964. The picture was directed by Yugo Serikawa (CYBORG 009). The screening will be an English dubbed 16mm print.
The newly formed ASIFA-Colorado is holding a big kick off bash. Chris Robinson, an ASIFA-International board member and the Ottawa International Animation Festival executive director, will present "The Best of Ottawa," a program of international award-winning animation.
Flickerfest is a short film festival that travels to various cities around Australia. Starting with a 7-day event in Sydney the event will take place in Kempsey, Canberra, Scone, Sawtell, Darwin, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Alice Springs and Byron Bay. The festival, now in its third year, has screened to audiences of over 10,000 people. Every year Flickerfest presents special programs of short films that showcase the work of specific regions.
The American Cinematheque and CAMEO are presenting a retrospective of animation from the Zagreb School. Directors Vatroslav Mimica and Zdenko Gaparovic will be on hand at the screening. The Zagreb School, which reached its peak in the 1960s, is considered one of the most modernist European animated film schools and produced some of the most important animated short films of its time.

Glendale Community College proudly presents an evening with Chris Bailey, Kellie-Bea Cooper and Doug Cooper, creators of the new animated short MAJOR DAMAGE, about a monster-fighting superhero and Melvin, the little boy who is his #1 fan. The three filmmakers will be discussing independent animation production in the year 2000. Animation Oscar nominee Chris Bailey has been working in both feature and TV animation for the last 10 years. Berkeley Breathed, author of the book EDWURD FUDWUPPER FIBBED BIG and director of the upcoming CGI adaptation, will be on hand at Storyopolis book store to sign books before the screening of the short. The new short film is produced by Storyopolis Productions and Nickelodeon Movies and is scheduled for a fall theatrical release. A surprise reader will be on hand to read the book to visitors. The short features the voice talents of John Cleese, Haley Joel Osment, Harry Shearer, Catherine O'Hara and Osment's sister Emily.
The Illinois Institute of Art-Schaumburg is conducting an evening of animation. The work of up and coming animators will be featured at this first annual festival of the animation arts. The premiere event will be held at The Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court, Schaumburg, Illinois from 6 - 9 pm. This juried event will showcase the work of current students and recent graduates. It will include multiple showings of animation programs, exhibitions of animation-related art and multimedia presentations. Admission is free, but an RSVP is requested.
The UCLA Film and Television Archive will be presenting an anime showcase entitled Anime A-Go-Go. A highlight of the program will be the U.S. premieres of two films on Halloween night. Opening the double bill will be an updated version of the original 1985 hit VAMPIRE HUNTER D, followed by the thriller BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE, which was conceived by anime luminary Mamoru Oshii (GHOST IN THE SHELL). The eclectic mix of films includes UTENA: THE MOVIE, and episodes of ANGEL LINKS, TENAMONYA VOYAGERS, COWBOY BEBOP, JUBEI-CHAN THE NINJA GIRL and MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: THE 08TH MS TEAM.
An evening of rare English-dubbed Japanese animated TV series of the 1960s that DIDN'T make it to America! Osamu Tezuka's BIG X, Toei's KEN THE WOLF BOY and Tatsunoko's SPACE ACE (aka RING-O) will be screened. ASIFA San Francisco will be hosting a night of new animation and special effects. ILM's Victoria Livingston will show a company reel of features and commercials, plus her own personal film. PDI will present a reel of commercial work and personal projects by staff members. DotComix will show several of their Web shows and a short on how they do performance animation. Wild Brain will screen about 30 minutes of new material including pilots, Webisodes, TV commercials and more. The event is a free screening at the Exploratorium and the general public is invited.
visions2000 celebrates everything that makes up animated theatre. Promoted by the University of Brighton, the festival features performances, film screenings, exhibitions and workshops for both adults and children. The festival tours to various locations around the U.K. including Birmingham, Bracknell, Ludlow, Oxford, Portsmouth, Walsall, Walton on Thames, Jersey and Kent. Brighton will also host a multi-media exhibition of U.K. animated pop promos and puppetry.
The Wanadoo Talent Show highlights the producers and scriptwriters from audiovisual television and Internet programs. Held in conjunction with MIPCOM, the event is presented by Wanadoo, the leading Internet provider in France. All projects will be reviewed by a committee of audiovisual and multimedia professionals, who will select six candidates to participate in the special "talent show" during the beginning of MIPCOM. The winner will receive 50,000FF (US$ 6,993.17) and the second place winner 20,000FF ($2,797.27).
