The Brinkley Girls Exhibition

The Cartoon Art Museum presents "The Brinkley Girls," a celebration of one of the most popular cartoonists of the early 20th century, Nell Brinkley. This retrospective, guest-curated by comics herstorian Trina Robbins, showcases 30 lavishly illustrated newspaper tearsheets, magazine illustrations, original artworks and other highlights from Robbins' personal collection.

Details regarding the opening reception and a special presentation by Robbins will be announced shortly.

33rd Cleveland International Film Festival

The 33rd Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) will be held March 19-29, 2009 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The festival features two family film programs as well as several shorts programs that feature animation. Last year, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences designated the CIFF as one of its qualifiers to the Academy Awards.

Animated short films to screen include TINY NATION from ILL Clan Animation Studios, CLOSED (Germany), MY HAPPY END (Germany), THE NEEDFUL HEAD (U.S.), POUND (U.S.), SLEEPING BETTY (Canada), ZOOLOGIC (U.S.) and ARTS DESIRE (U.S.).

Lucca Animation 2009

The 2009 edition of Lucca Animation, the international animated film festival, will be held from March 18-22, in the ancient Tuscan town of Lucca. The biggest competitive festival in Italy will screen dozens of works from all over the world in its short film competition, under the examination of an international jury. Directors will be in Lucca to meet the audience, hold workshops, talk about their art. The comprehensive retrospective "The Masters of Prague" will provide a wide look on Czech animation, from its historical masterpieces up to the best of today's work.

Ayuyang first became interested in cartooning while growing up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she spent mornings watching MERRIE MELODIES cartoons, afternoons reading the newspaper funnies and MAD magazine, and evenings scrutinizing illustrations in various children's books right before she'd fall asleep.

Capcom to Host Resident Evil 5 Blood Drive

This once-in-a-lifetime evening begins with a reception at MoCCA for "The Art of WATCHMEN" exhibition, continues with an advance screening of WATCHMEN, based on the graphic novel co-created and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, and concludes with an author signing of WATCHMEN PORTRAITS by Clay Enos.

The Cartoon Art Museum presents "The Art of Stan Sakai: Celebrating 25 Years of USAGI YOJIMBO," a career-spanning retrospective featuring over 60 pieces of original artwork by the critically-acclaimed artist. It has been 25 years since Sakai's signature character, a samurai rabbit named Usagi Yojimbo, first appeared in comic books, and this exhibition follows the entire existence of Usagi, from the very first pencil sketches to completed story pages, covers, and watercolor paintings.

For the first time, Oscar fans in Chicago will be able to hold an actual Oscar statuette and have their photo taken at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Meet the Oscars, Chicago." The exhibition will open Friday, February 13, at The Shops at North Bridge on Michigan Avenue, and run through Sunday, February 22, the night of the 81st Academy Awards presentation. Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free. Chicago is the only city to host a "Meet the Oscars" exhibition this year.
