Star Wars: The Magic of Myth

The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum's exhibit "Star Wars: The Magic of Myth" has come to the Field Museum. One of the most popular Smithsonian exhibits of all-time, "Magic of Myth" features costumes, characters like Chewbacca and Jabba the Hut, as well as production props and models. The exhibit opens with the actual 8-foot model of the Imperial Star Destroyer used in the film. Tickets are US$5 on top of the basic Field Museum admission for adults; $2.50 extra for children aged 3-11 and $4 extra for seniors and students.

Among this year's seminars will be "Digital Hollywood: Bringing Entertainment Project Management into the New Millennium." The event will be hosted by Creative Planet and feature a look at how new technology will transform the efficiency of entertainment production. Another seminar of interest is "Storyboards For People Who Can't Draw." The discussion will be lead by James O. Fraioli, the author of STORYBOARDING 101.

RISD FILM: A Celebration of Contributions to the Film Industry

The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) will host a three-part multi-disciplinary exhibition titled "RISD FILM: A Celebration of Contributions to the Film Industry." Curated by Burleigh Smith, head of the Film Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, "RISD FILM" will feature works by such noted RISD alumni as Gus Van Sant '75, Martha Coolidge '68, Mary Lambert '74, Bob Richardson '79, Jean De Segonzac '75 and Seth MacFarlane '95.

First International Symposium on Non-Photorealistic Animation and Rendering (NPAR)

NPAR 2000 is the first international symposium dedicated to non-photorealistic animation and rendering, including cartoon animation systems and techniques. Held in conjunction with the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, SIGGRAPH and Eurographics, the symposium will bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and the industry. It will showcase cutting-edge research in non-photorealistic animation and rendering systems and techniques, and present examples of their application in original computer-animated films.

The 6th Annual Toronto Short Film Festival

The festival will have the following categories/programs: Computer Animation, International, Visions Canada, Children's Cinema and Midnight's Mania. Films must have been completed after June 1998, and not exceed 40 minutes. Films will be selected based on quality and originality. In conjunction with the festival, a marketplace will be set up for TV buyers, distributors, producers, exhibitors, development and acquisition executives and networks to view all films submitted on video. Over 1,600 videos will be included in the market catalogue.

Folimage Exhibit In Annecy

Folimage, the creators of the 1995 Cartoon D'Or winner LE MOINE ET LE POISSON (THE MONK AND THE FISH), is showing an exhibition of their world-famous work. The traveling event screened in Valence, France earlier this year and moved to Annecy at the beginning of the Annecy Animation Festival. The event features scripts, storyboards, original drawings, sets, models and puppets.

Eugenio Zanetti: Film Dreams and Haunting Visions

The Academy Foundation Galleries is presenting an exhibition of production designer Eugenio Zanetti's work. The exhibit will highlight Zanetti's Hollywood film designs that combine Gothic and Romanesque styles. Recently Zantetti helped bring to life the evil house in THE HAUNTING. The Argentine-born designer has created amazing visuals for such movies as WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, FLATLINERS and WARRIORS OF VIRTUE. Zanetti took home an Oscar for art direction for his work on RESTORATION.

Nordic and Baltic Animation Festival Fredrikstad

After 6 years, the organizers of the Oslo Animation Festival have moved operations to Fredrikstad. Even with a new name, the Festival invites both animators and spectators to take part in five days of animated fun to promote the screening and better understanding of animation.
