Invoking the universes of Edgar Alan Poe, Lewis Carroll and the claustrophobia of Kafka, the work of Czech filmmaker Jan Svankmajer is bizarrely beautiful: a witty blend of the macabre, the grotesque and gothic horror! The series opens with the LA premiere of his newest film GREEDY GUTS (OSTESANEK, 2001). Svankmajer's features ALICE and PLEASURE CONSPIRATORS will screen along with several programs of his short films, plus the Brothers Quay's THE CABINET OF JAN SVANKMAJER (14 min.).

Flashbang announces FLASHBANG 3, the third installation and screening of cinematic and interactive Flash films. The event will feature cinematic Flash films shown on the big screen, as well as kiosks allowing attendees to explore interactive Flash media up close and personal. All films will also be added to flashbangonline.com after the show. Along with Flash based media, submissions of non-motion digital art will also be accepted for viewing in Eleven50's gallery the evening of the event.

Akira Artwork Exhibition And Art Installation

Silicon Pulp animation gallery is celebrating Katsuhiro Otomo's anime opus, AKIRA, with Akira! Akira! Akira!, an exhibition of rarely seen artwork, merchandise, manga and more. Produced in 1988 and based on his cyber-active manga classic of the same name, Otomo's groundbreaking film is the best known and arguably still the best anime to emerge from Japan. The two-hour epic took over one billion yen, 2,200 shots and 160,000 animation cels to make - more than twice the number used in most Hollywood feature-length animation at the time. Akira! Akira! Akira!

ASIFA Animation Art Auction

During the Annecy festival (June 4-9, 2001), ASIFA International will hold a silent auction of original animation art at the ASIFA booth. Featured animators include: Bill Plympton (MUTANT ALIENS, in competition this year), Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis (WHEN THE DAY BREAKS, Annecy grand prix 1999), Georges Schwizgebel (past Annecy juror and exhibition artist), Don Hertzfeldt (REJECTED, 2001 Oscar nominee, in panorama this year) and other brilliant animators. All proceeds will go toward the ASIFA production fund to finance new animation collaborations by ASIFA members.

Michael Wright Digital Art Exhibition At DHIMA

DHIMA (DH Institute of Media Arts) is presenting an exhibition of paintings by pioneer digital artist Michael Wright. There is also a reception on Saturday, April 28. Wright is a painter who began to explore digital media in the mid-1980s on an Amiga computer. He exhibited his first digital print in 1989 and continues to work in both traditional and electronic mediums. He has exhibited his digital work and traditional works on a national level. Wright is represented by the Spectra Gallery for Digital Art in New York.

The Los Angeles Museum of Television and Radio presents a 90-minute film on Nick Park, the creator of the popular stop-motion animation characters Wallace and Gromit. The film will feature sequences from CREATURE COMFORT, and all three of the Wallace & Gromit shorts. A GRAND DAY OUT has Wallace and Gromit traveling to the moon in search of cheese. THE WRONG TROUSERS chronicles the mishaps that ensue when Wallace takes in a shifty penguin as a lodger. A CLOSE SHAVE uncovers how Wallace and Gromit unravel a countrywide sheep-rustling ring.

Sprocket Ensemble CD Celebration

To celebrate the release of the new Nik Phelps and the Sprocket Ensemble CD "Fetch," Sprocket Ensemble is holding a musical animation party. The CD features songs from the group's popular animation/music shows at the Minna St. Gallery. Musicians on the CD include violinists Carla Kihlstedt and Irene Sazer, singer Connie Champagne, bassist Matt Small, tubist Zachariah Spellman and eclectic horn Nik Phelps. New films by Sandra Gibson and Chris Lanier will be screened, along with David Michalak's film INNA MINNA. Admission is US$10 general and $7 for students.
