The DIY Convention

Begins: November 2, 2002

The DIY Convention: Do It Yourself in Film, Music & Books is a one-day event on creating, promoting and distributing independent film, music and books. The event features panels, workshops and exhibits on various aspects of bringing your creative vision to a larger audience. The New York City event is the Saturday programming at the CMJ Music Marathon, now in its 22nd year, and features the DIY Book Festival Awards, honoring the top independent authors and publishers in various categories, including comics.

IPEX - Independent Publishing Experience

Begins: October 26, 2002

IPEX will be held on-campus at UCLA in the Ackerman Grand Ballroom on Saturday, October 26th, 2002 from 10am to 7pm. Admission is free with a UCLA student ID and $2 genereal admission. UCLA parking is $7. For list of special guests and detailed information, visit website.

Future Animators of the Future 3rd Annual (Animation and Video) FAFshow 2002

The FAFshow provides a showcase for Animators and Video Makers who wish to entertain and generally prod the audience into some sort reaction (whether it be positive or otherwise). You can check out the FAFsite www.fafcom.com to sample the type of work FAF generates.

The FAFshow screens in a number of major cities, and will have a hefty bit of guerilla marketing in NY and Boston

The International Film Market is open to every filmmaker with a focus on films which, due to their country of origin, genre, language, topic or style, tend to be overshadowed at the major film markets in the world, yet they represent relevant cultural, scientific and artistic values. The organizers would like to establish a forum for films that have less possibility to meet the buyers of major distributors and TV companies: for scientific and educational films, documentaries, experimental productions and authentic animated films.

Art Seminars - Seminars, as always, will include the ubiquitous and fun cel painting classes! Drawing, modelling, and so forth are planning in various degrees, and Tom Grossman, modeller extraordinaire, will host a 'Make and Take' modelling session where kids under 16 can come and get a model to work on for free! Artist Newton Ewell will also teach special sessions on drawing Characters for Manga and Mecha for Manga. Too cool....

San Juan Animation Festival

he San Juan Animation Festival invites all animators from around the world to submit an example of their work to largest event of its kind in the Caribbean. This is a non-competitive event which offers the opportunity to all animators to show their work to media professionals, production companies, advertising agencies, television networks and movie producers from the Latin American Market that will be attending the four day event.

AnimeExpo New York 2002

Anime Expo is a program of the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation. Guests of honor will include Akitaro Daichi (Jubei-Chan, Kodomo no Omocha); Noboru Ishiguro (Astroboy, Robotech); Takao Koyama (Dragonball, Gatchaman); Taro Maki (Tenchi Muyo in Love, Tenchi Muyo: The Movie 2); Mayumi Tanaka (voice credits); Yoshiyuki Tomino (Reideen the Brave, Gundam).

The International Animation and Comic Exposition hosts video theaters, exhibit hall, costume/masquerade, panels, music video contest, art show, and the SPJA Charity Auction.

Playhouse Pictures Cel Sale!

Begins: August 23, 2002

Playhouse Pictures, one of Hollywood's oldest animation studios, is having a moving sale. The sale will include 45 years of animation paraphernalia from TV and film including vintage animation drawings and cels, background paintings, storyboards, color models, story sketches, cereal boxes, toys and even some animation equipment. The sale will also be open to the general public on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25. Playhouse was established in 1952 and has been doing commercial animation and movie titles ever since. They set up shop at their La Brea location in 1957.

The 9th International Animation Festival in Japan Hiroshima 2002

Created in 1985, the Hiroshima Festival celebrates love & peace through the art of animation, basically held biennially, under the endorsement of ASIFA and according to its rules. Hiroshima is consisted of competition programs, special programs, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, etc.P>No category for competition, any animation shorts under 30 minutes and completed after the April of two years prior to the festival year are eligible. We are currently conducting our DIRECT SALE and AUGUST AUCTION "AFTER SALE" in which dozens of animation artworks are available for immediate purchase. National Lum & Abner Society Convention

This is technically an old-time radio convention, but the guest speakers are of great interest to anyone who is interested in classic cartoon voice actors. DALLAS McKENNON, GINNY TYLER, and NANCY WIBLE will be on hand to discuss their long careers. The convention will be held at the Lime Tree Inn in Mena, Arkansas, on June 14-15, 2002. Activities begin at 5 pm on Friday and continue all day on Saturday. There is no registration fee or any other charge for attending; you simply show up.
