"Talking With…" Sesame Workshop's Gary E. Knell At Mipcom Junior

On Sunday, October 6, 2002 MIPCOM Junior's "Talking With" sessions will host Gary E. Knell, president and CEO of Sesame Workshop. William Kentridge Exhibit At LACMA

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the sole West Coast and final U.S. venue of South African artist William Kentridges haunting drawings and animated films. The exhibition remains on view through October 6, 2002. This is the first American retrospective of Kentridge's work and includes eleven animated films, more than 60 drawings, two sculptural installations and video presentations of theater and opera productions designed and scripted by Kentridge.

Special Benefit Screening Of Spirited Away At Pixar

Pixar Animation is opening its doors for a worthy cause. The studio, which is normally not open to the public, is hosting a gala preview of the English-dubbed version of Hayao Miyazaki's SPIRITED AWAY, featuring special guests Miyazaki, Pixar director John Lasseter and actor John Ratzenberger, to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. On Sunday, September 15, 2002, guests can enjoy an exclusive opportunity to spend an afternoon at Pixar Animation Studios, view a special preview of the film and meet the special guests during a cocktail reception and silent auction.

Big Apple Anime Fest Hosts Premiere Screenings This Weekend In New York City.

The Big Apple Anime Fest 2002 (BAAF 2002) will present the exclusive sneak preview of DreamWorks' recently acquired anime feature MILLENNIUM ACTRESS, this Saturday, August 31, 2002 at 7:30 pm. The screening will be introduced by Taro Maki, the film's producer, who will also be hosting a question and answer session directly following the feature. The festival will also premiere the English dubbed version of COWBOY BEBOP: THE MOVIE on Friday, August 30, 2002 at 8:00 pm (this screening is unfortunately sold out!).

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty In Original 70 mm Format

If you live in the Los Angeles-area, you have the opportunity to see Walt Disneys 1959 classic animated feature SLEEPING BEAUTY in its fully restored, original Technirama 70mm format. Screening exclusively at Hollywood's El Capitan theater, this special widescreen print of the film also features a restored audio soundtrack that takes maximum advantage of the films six-track Stereophonic mix highlighting the film's score, which was adapted from the music of Tchaikovsky.

L.A.'s Playhouse Pictures Cel Sale Open to Animators - Tonight!

On Friday, August 23, 2002, Playhouse Pictures, one of Hollywood's oldest animation studios, is having a moving sale. Beginning at 7:00 pm, the sale will include 45 years of animation paraphernalia from TV and film. According to ASIFA-Hollywood, vintage animation drawings and cels, background paintings, storyboards, color models, story sketches, cereal boxes, toys and even some animation equipment will be up for grabs. The sale will also be open to the general public on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25.

Cartoon Network's The Groovenians At The NY Museum Of Radio And TV.

On Thursday, August 22, 2002, Saks Fifth Avenue and The New York Museum of Radio and Television are sponsoring a preview screening of the new Cartoon Network CG special, THE GROOVENIANS. Starring Dennis Hopper and Paul Reubens and featuring music by Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO fame and members of the B-52s, the show is based on the designs of Pop-Surrealist Kenny Scharf. The Mill Presents Black Hawk Down VFX At LEAF

At the 2002 London Effects and Animation Festival (LEAF), visual effects house The Mill will give a detailed presentation on the visual effects it created for Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning film BLACK HAWK DOWN. Further supporting the festival, The Mill has created animated IDs for the LEAF Awards to be held on October 10, 2002 at London's Olympia exhibition center. "We are very excited to be involved with this year's LEAF," says The Mill's 3D operations manager Stephen Venning.

Tokyopop Brings Manga Land To Comic-Con

Manga publisher Tokyopop is transforming its booth at Comic-Con into "Manga Land," featuring a variety of branded attractions showcasing Tokyopop's popular manga brands, including INITIAL D, GTO and the CLAMP titles. The attractions include a full-sized prototype INITIAL D arcade game, a GTO "classroom" starring GTO hero Onizuka in the flesh, mini-manga drawing competitions and other games for prizes.

Digital Arts Festival, owned by Future Publishing, and Digital Media World, owned by Advanstar Communications, have combined into Digital Arts World, a single exhibition showcasing the best of both events. ASIFA-Hollywood Presents An Evening Of Beauty And The Beast

On Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 7:00 pm, ASIFA-Hollywood presents "Walt Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - Eleven Years Later." BEAUTY & THE BEAST animator Tom Sito and a panel of veteran Disney artists will be assembled to recall the stories behind the creation of the only animated feature to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. Melbourne International Animation Festival Announces Winners

The second Melbourne International Animation Festival in Melbourne, Australia concluded on Sunday, June 30, 2002 with a best of the festival screening and awards presentation. Featuring over 150 films from more than 30 countries, the festival is currently touring other major Australian cities. Among the winners of this year's awards were DOG by Suzie Templeton, which tied with Phil Mulloy's THE INVASION for Best Overall Film. The Best Australian Film prize of AUS$2,000 (donated by SBS Television) was shared by Dan Hartney's BUCKETHEAD and LOOKING FOR HORSES by Anthony Lawrence.
