SIGGRAPH 2004 Sets Computer Animation Festival Program

ACM SIGGRAPH announced the program for the Computer Animation Festival for SIGGRAPH 2004, the 31st international conference on Computer Graphics & Interactive Techniques, to be held Aug. 8-12 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The Computer Animation Festival jury chose 83 selections out of a record 643 entry for exemplary use of computer-generated imagery and compelling storytelling. There are 40 international selections and 27 student pieces in the Festival.

ASIFA-Hollywood 2D Expo Makes Points

ASIFA-Hollywood organizers were pleased with the turnout and reception to its first 2D Expo Pencils Not Pixels, a one-day symposium and conference for traditional animators, held June 26, 2004, from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm at Woodbury University in Burbank, California. COMDEX Las Vegas 2004 Postponed

COMDEX Las Vegas 2004 has been postponed in order to reshape the event with the cooperation of information technology (IT) industry leaders, it was announced by organizer MediaLive International Inc. COMDEX 2004 had been scheduled to open November 14, 2004, in Las Vegas. The company has established a COMDEX Advisory Board representing the IT industry's foremost companies to determine how COMDEX can reboot itself to best meet the future needs of the industry.

Softimage Co. announced that it will premiere its SOFTIMAGE|XSI version 4.0 software at industry events in New York and Los Angeles on June 28 and July 13, respectively. The events - sponsored by HP and Intel Corp., and part of Softimage's "i am 4 power" campaign - will feature product demonstrations of SOFTIMAGE|XSI v.4.0 software running on the latest technology from HP, Intel and NVIDIA Corp.

The buzz at VES 2004 may have been mostly about jobs, outsourcing and the need to unionize the industry, but the seminars were still about creativity at the sixth annual VES Festival of visual effects, held in the bucolic community of San Rafael, California, June 18-20. Nickelodeon Celebrates 25th at PROMAX/BDA

Nickelodeon, celebrating its 25th birthday this year, will kick off the 49th annual PROMAX&BDA conference at the Summer Garden at Rockefeller Center in New York City with a cocktail reception on the opening night, 8-11:00 pm on June 23, 2004 for conference attendees and other invited guests.

German avant-garde animator Albrecht Ade, attending the German Animation Festival, that opened June 6, 2004 at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts, said that the festival organizers are determined to devote a special section to Iranian animations at the 2006 German Festival.

MIFA Shut Down by Union Protest

The MIFA conference in Annecy, France, kicked off seemingly well on June 14, 2004. However, the Electricians Union shut down the electric to the market for an hour as a protest of the French government's plans to privatize the electric industry. The protest was timed to hit the festival because of the attendance of French Minister of culture and communication Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres. Much like the protests that often accompany the Cannes Film Festival, the animation industry is no longer an outsider in this French tradition.

Passion's Lighting Struck Assistant Director Unveils Artwork

Jan Michelini, an assistant director on THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, unveiled in the U.S. his artwork inspired by the filming of the movie at a celebrity studded reception on May 12, 2004 at Kolibri Gallery. The 24 year-old Italian-born Michelini was affectionately nicknamed "Lightning Boy" by Mel Gibson and producer Steve McEveety when he was struck by bolts of lightning on two separate occasions while filming the "The Crucifixion" and "Jesus delivers the Sermon on the Mount" scenes.
