Protecting Copyright in a Digital Age

In an effort to bring together multiple industries and regions in the fight against global piracy, the Korea Copyright Commission and Entertainment Asia Network have announced the panel "Protecting Copyright in a Digital Age," which will be held on Wednesday, November 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles.

This free event hosted by the Korea Copyright Commission and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism-Republic of Korea and the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles will provide a forum for governmental agencies along with Asian and U.S. content holders and distributors in the industries of film, television, music, gaming, and new media to discuss how to protect copyright in an ever increasing digital world.

The panel will cover piracy and copyright issues that have plagued both Asia and the U.S. This includes government action and initiatives to control piracy, as well as new and innovative business models and strategies employed by companies to expand digital distribution while making it a priority to protect copyright.

Refreshments will be provided and there will be time for networking immediately following the panel.

Jim Williams Chief Technology Officer, MPAA Jim Williams leads the Office of Technology for the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc (MPAA) in its efforts to facilitate a smooth digital transition that provides consumers new ways to enjoy Hollywood content when, where and how they want. Williams works closely with the six major motion picture studios to advance movie and television producer's interests throughout the world in various technology-related capacities, including content protection license negotiation, license enforcement, industry relations, government relations, pro-technology public outreach and standardization. Williams joined the MPAA as Vice President, Television and Video Systems Standards in 2002. In 2006, Williams was given responsibility to lead all international technology initiatives of the MPAA's international counterpart, the Motion Picture Association (MPA).

Maura Kawai Senior International Trade Specialist, U.S. Department of Commerce Maura Kawai is a Senior International Trade Specialist with the U.S. Commercial Service in Los Angeles, the export promotion arm of the U.S. Department of Commerce. She covers the IT and telecom, entertainment and new media sectors in Los Angeles. She works together with firms to assist them in expanding their business, especially overseas. The U.S. Commercial Service has a global network of eighty offices in U.S. Embassies and U.S. Consulates worldwide.

Jeffrey Chang Director of New Media Business Marketing, KBS America Jeffrey Chang is Director of New Media Business Marketing at KBS America, a Los Angeles-based company dedicated to providing top-quality programs of KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) in North America and promoting cultural ties between Korea and the United States. He currently oversees KBS America's new media business marketing and strategy development for the distribution of KBS programs in North America. Chang researches local markets and new technology to develop strategies for various online and IPTV platforms. He is also responsible for protecting the copyright of KBS contents.

Jeremy Ross Director of New Product Development, TOKYOPOP Jeremy Ross leads new product development at TOKYOPOP adapting the company's original manga and manhwa into games, animation, film and other media. Ross initiated TOKYOPOP's original manga development, signing over 100 worldwide creators. He heads Online Manga and Pilots on www.tokyopop.com. Ross develops TOKYOPOP's Korean relationships, working with artists, government agencies and publishing partners. He has served as a judge and speaker at events in Seoul and Los Angeles. He successfully launched the first mobile manga viewer on-deck from major U.S. carriers with partner uclick, and the first e-ink manga with SONY's Reader. Ross was previously Exec Producer for 3-D CG pioneers Kleiser-Walczak, Director of New Technology at Callaway and VP of Computer Games at Byron Preiss Multimedia.

Christopher R. Garcia Deputy City Attorney, Los Angeles City Attorney's Office Christopher R. Garcia prosecutes Identity Theft, Government Benefit Fraud and Piracy of intellectual property as a Deputy City Attorney and as a Special Assistant United States Attorney. He has trained LAPD's Vice officers and LAPD's Organized Crime and Vice Division on anti-piracy. Garcia has also trained state and local law enforcement regarding prosecution of counterfeit goods and software at Oakley's Training Facility and at the Electronics Entertainment Exposition. His undergraduate degree is from Berkeley and his law degree is from Harvard. An adjunct professor of law, he teaches introduction to cyber crimes and trial advocacy. Garcia has lectured on Identity Theft and Government Benefit Fraud at the University of Southern California, University of California at Los Angeles and at other financial, retail and government institutions.

Clifford Lo Entertainment Lawyer, Law Offices of Clifford Lo Clifford Lo, has practiced exclusively entertainment law since 1996. He studied at Yale and Boston College Law School and is licensed in California. He spent six years as in-house counsel with Disney focusing upon Asia, Latin America, and Europe, including two years based in London. Lo then established his private practice in 2002, to assist production companies, producers, screenwriters, directors and others with entertainment transactional matters.
