On Sunday, Feb. 17 at Santa Monica's Aero Theatre, special effects master Ray Harryhausen will be joined by a trio of today's screen magicians for a live commentary on Harryhausen's masterpiece,THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, celebrating its 50th anniversary. Joining the 87-year-old film legend will be Oscar winners Dennis Muren (STAR WARS), Phil Tippett (STARSHIP TROOPERS) and Randall William Cook (LORD OF THE RINGS) -- along with Steven C. Smith, biographer of the film's composer, Bernard Herrmann. Harryhausen authority Arnold Kunert will moderate this unique event. Questions and comments from the theatre audience will be invited, as well.
Prior to the screening, illustration gallery Every Picture Tells A Story (right across the street from the Aero Theatre) will host a reception, exhibit and book signing for Harryhausen. Harryhausen's original production drawings from his many fantasy epics will be on display -- including a brand new, limited-edition print of "Sinbad and the Bat People" -- a rare work created for a film that was never realized.
The Ray Harryhausen reception and exhibit is at 3:00 pm at Every Picture Tells A Story, 1311 Montana Ave., Santa Monica. This event is free and open to the public. The screening of 7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD, with live commentary, begins at 5:00 pm at the American Cinematheque's Aero Theatre, 1328 Montana Ave., Santa Monica. Tickets are $10 each.
