Best route to writing/directing? Storyboarding or Traditional Animation major?

Hi,

I am an aspiring writer and animator, soon to be attending grad school for animation.

If my goal is to ultimately end up writing or directing animated television, specifically 2d, which is the better major choice? Storyboarding or traditional 2d animation? I have self-taught experience animating in Flash, in traditional frame-by-frame animation, as well as creating characters and storyboards, etc.

I realize that you have to climb your way up the ladder to achieve either of those jobs, so I am not expecting either major to launch me into anything immediately. I simply want to know which major is the more typical path that show runners and writers have taken in the industry?

I expect that some of you may say to major in writing, but realize I have already studied this with a film undergrad.

Thanks,

Jeff

Storyboarding would probably

Storyboarding would probably be the more hands-on route to directing, because the 'board artist is essentially directing the picture anyways.

The staging/composition, camera angles, character placement, character action, expressions.....camera moves........even things like lighting, and effects......the whole gamut is frequently decided at the storyboard stage.
Animators will take their cues from the storyboard so the decisions therein have already been made.

Great, thanks for the insight Ken!

Storyboarding, definitely.

Storyboarding, definitely.

Even if storyboarding doesn't 'work out' for you, once you have it under your belt... you could probably transition very easily to traditional 2D animation afterwards.

There are many ways to become

There are many ways to become a writer/director, but the best route is to learn from others and practice. You can do this by writing, reading and learning about them. In addition you need to write your own scripts and be able to direct yourself in front of a camera. Visit this https://glorious-essays.net/ site for best services. The most important thing for me is to have a passion for what you want to do, because it will keep you motivated and make all the hard work worth it in the end.
