Online Education

I'm interested in going to school for computer animation but I'm geographically displaced for a while and am stuck doing online classes. I'm looking at UAT (University of Advancing Technology) but am wondering if anyone has any better suggestions. I do know of AnimationMentor.com and it sounds great, but I need to Bachelor's Degree program (GI Bill and all). Any ideas for me?

Thanks,
Brian

Most every other school that has a 3D animation program teaches modeling, rigging, lighting, etc. I'm not sure which schools have the top programs though.

Which takes me back to my previous question: Are there any good online 3-D animation bachelors programs? I've been looking at UAT, but I see a few others listed in the AWN School Database. Does anyone else have any input in the matter?

Brian

Have you checked out the Academy of Art College in San Francisco? I got my bachelors there and they have a pretty robust 3D program, and I'm pretty sure they offer online classes. Other than that, I don't have any other first hand experience with any of the other schools.

I think it really depends on what your goals are. If you want to learn computer animation simply to create animations for yourself, then a program that covers modeling, texturing, lighting and animating might be right for you. If your goal is to become a character animator and work professionally, then AnimationMentor.com is your best bet. The way I look at it, it's a question of whether to become a jack-of-all-trades and master-of-none OR try to become a master at one of the disciplines. Smaller companies may appreciate a person who can wear many hats, but my impression of the larger studios is they're looking for mastery of a particular skill.

Well, the goal for me is to be able to produce my own cartoons and post them online. Seems kinda silly to read that while I'm surrounded by professionals in the field, but it's what I'm hoping to do some day. So I guess I'm looking for the jack-of-all-trades route. I requested some info from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and they look promising. I need to sign up for school soon though, so any other suggestions on a good 3- or 4-year bachelors program online?

Brian

I'm not sure what qualifications the GI bill needs but Animation Mentor does offer help with tuition. Give them a call and maybe they can work something out or have encountered your situation befor. It is a great program if character animation is what you want to do. I was able to do it while touring around Germany for two months this past summer, so you can really do the program any where.

GI BIll

While the GI BIll will cover certain certificate programs, I know any degree will qualify. I'm not really worried about getting the degree though as the animation I'm hoping to do will just be for myself. I guess I'd need to contact the school to find out. What did you think of AnimationMentor?

I think it's a great school. I've learned more about how to animate in the first 12 week class than I did in all four years at the art school I went to. They only teach character animation, so if you want to learn how to model, light and texture stuff, then this isn't the school for you. Personally I think it's well worth the money.

It sounds great, but where would you suggest I learn about modeling, lighting or texturing?
