So who's seen the animated movie 9? What did you like? What didn't you like?

This is not supposed to be for people who haven't seen the movies, but a discussion on the movie and animation. So post spoilers.

Saw it and enjoyed it, but was a bit disappointed in the story. 9 causes all the problems the others encounter after meeting him, yet he doesn't seem upset by the trauma he's caused. Several of them die because of him, yet he doesn't really seem all that distressed by it.

That said, the visuals were beautiful. The compression of the burlap texture around the mouths irritated me, but I'm sure there was a good reason for it.

I'm just glad for the existence of an adult-oriented animated film that doesn't require knowledge of Japanese culture or mythology. I loved the advertising for the film: "Not your little brother's animated film."

The back story that I heard about 9 is that it is based on a short animation. I am not sure how long this feature was in the pipeline before it made it to the big screen.

I though the work was excellent. To me, there was a mix of animation styles, like stop motion set next to the very solid 3D effects. I sure I saw watercolor used in the color skim.

I really liked "9". I was happy to see how closely they maintained the look and feel of the original short. My 12yo son LOVED it. "best animated feature of the year!" He was thrilled to see something un-kid-like.

I liked all the characters and cared about them. I particularly liked the way they showed them alive and then lifeless. It was very powerful and made you think they could all be "next".

My interpretation was that [spoilers] since their personalities were fragments of the scientist none of them were "complete". The girl was mostly all action, the twins were scientific, one (1) had leadership qualities but lacked courage; etc. So, 9 was missing "personal responsibility" ... but to be fair, I think he was acting like a soldier on the battle field and needed to get the job done while not leaving anyone behind.

My only gripe (and it's a small one or large one) was they took a lot of liberties with scale. The machines looked enormous on the bridge and in the buildings yet and the characters looked to be about 12" tall. The machines should have been about the size of a car.

Another fault, I didn't like the camera shake. It just looked blurry.

But that's nit picky. I thought it was great.

The movie was all CG, although I understand why you thought there was some stop-motion in there. The animation itself was very good.
