advice on animation rates

I've been asked to animate a music video for a band and they have a budget, in the past they have made two videos and hired directors and camera equipment and all that jazz. They asked me to animate a video for them after seeing one i made for a recently released album.

BUT, i did the first video for a favour for a friend, plus it was an opportunity that sounded like fun. It was also the only thing i've really animated, more than a few seconds long at least.

Can anyone give me an indication of what the going rates are for animation work?? It would be a 2D computer animation (PS/flash/AE), about 3 mins long. Bearing in mind i don;t have much experience.

Here's a link to the other video, if seeing that helps at all??

Well, judging from the Aniboom Radiohead contest last year, it seems like it would pay $1000 for the 4-5 minute videos.(thats how much the finalists got), but I would say, if this is a smaller group, say 150-250(or going higher by 50-75), depending on how time consuming it is. Then, make a deal that any deals made involving your animation, like airing a music video, you get %5-10 of the money on the music video.

Notice, this is coming from someone with no experience in the business, but this seems like a pretty fair deal. You are insured a decent amount of money while still keeping the opportunity of receiving more if the bands' fanbase/popularity grows.

LilGrim is a little far off, In my opinion. That 1000 prize was for a one minute proof of concept animation, not for a finished 3 min music video. Your rate should be much higher than that. For the finished animations, the contestants got more than 10 thousand. $1k is low for boards alone.

If it's going to take you a month to do the finished product, from start to finish, figure out how many hours you are going to be putting into it roughly. I wouldn't be doing all that work for less than $35-$45 an hour or more. Regardless of your experience, they came to you for the skills that you have.

The going rates for animation from concept to final print remains about $10,000 per minute. I'm assuming here that you'll be asked to provide designs, storyboards, slug the timing, layout, animate, colour, edit etc.

Some folks claim they can do it for less, seldom is it claimed they need more--but you get what you pay for.
