What is out there on 2D effects animation?

Hi guys!

I've been looking for some good guidelines for animating 2D effects animation traditionally. There seems to be an absence of books on the topic. Does anyone know of any good resources?

I'd appreciate any leads, or if this topic has come up before on this forum, a link to the previous thread would be helpful as well. Thanks!

There's a new book out there by a master: Elemental Magic by Joe Gilland.

I'm fortunate to know Joe personally, and he's probably one of THE best in the biz for 2D effect animation. The book should be out already, or set to debut very soon.

Wow! Thanks so much!!! I'll be eagerly anticipatting the release date!

I am not seeing any release date for his book, so I am thinking that he may be self publishing this book.

interesting topic. no idea when the elemental magic book will be out..

any other ideas? resources?

I keep seeking similar information on and off, unfortunately it seems to be rather hard to find. Here's some links of what I've found though, and even if you're not interested in doing FX in flash, you could still probably glean some use from these.

Also, they're totally awesome and posted this link:

Which is a pile of feature FX notes. Disjointed in many places, but still highly useful.

Adam Phillips (ex Australian Disney FX animator) is supposedly working on a tutorial DVD, but when this is to be finished/released is still undetermined. He's busy with his Brackenwood stuff and trying to make a living otherwise.

And finally, don't forget the Timing for Animation book by Harold Whitaker and John Halas has some useful FX info in there too.

I'll keep watching this thread in the hopes that someone else turns up some more golden info :)

I can't seem to edit my last post... but here's a cool link I found by hunting through Joseph Gilland's site.

Don't forget to watch the dvds of your favourite films in slow mo. That's good learning too.

some of that stuff is pretty amazing....

Is there any chance that you can find the release date for this book? I can not find any information about when or who is publising this book.

While checking up on Elemental Magic blog, I saw that there is a release date for the book. March of 2009 the book will be on Amazon and at books stores. I hope the price is not too steep because I wont this book.

When Joe Gilland's "Elemental Magic" comes out it will be a much needed textbook on traditional hand-drawn effects.

I wanted to also mention that the school where I work has an Online Class in traditional effects animation available.

ANM 261 Introduction to Effects Animation taught by Kathleen Quaife . Kathleen is a veteran effects animator having worked for Don Bluth, Disney, Warner Bros. Feature Animation , and many other studios. She is one of the strongest , most knowledgeable effects animators in the business and has been very successful in applying her traditional effects skills to digital production using Flash and ToonBoom. See examples of Kathleen's work here: Kathleen Quaife reels

The class is part of full online degree program in Animation, but if you're not interested in the degree program you can take individual classes as Continuing Education for personal enrichment .

See here for info. - Continuing Education Personal Enrichment

Some of the classes do have prerequisites , so if you are not enrolled in a degree program and are taking it for Personal Enrichment then you will need to contact the admissions office to show completion of a similar course or "equivalent knowledge" to get the prereqs waived.
