My first animation

Hello,
I'm new here, and trying to get into animation.
Anyway, this was created from an original illustration I did, which was later chopped up for animation (I wish I knew originally when I drew it)

It's my first real animation, and is the project which is really making me want to learn more.
What do you think?

Also, I'm torn between using Flash, Toon Boom or Anime Studio. I know flash pretty well, but am still unsure what software would be best.

Any advice would be great!

looks pretty good! As for the Toon Boom vs Anime Studio well all of my animations are done in Anime Studio. I only have the standard version though. I have never used Toon Boom. A lot of the members at my site ToonTube use both of them. If you get a chance stop by and check it out.

Hello NHansen, and welcome to the AWN Forums.

I really like the illustration. The animation is really good, esspecially since this wasn't built to be animated.

The animation is a bit floaty and even. It looks like everything is tweened evenly. But that will come with more experience. Also the motions when he flies in to strike is a bit fast and is hard for the eyes to read what's going on. What will help this is to anticipate the fly in. Maybe have him float up a bit higher and back and have his limbs curl up a bit. Hold it for a frame or too then have him streak in. As it is now, he just zips forward and it's too jarring and not how things move in real life.

With your visual style you can make some really cool shorts. I look forward too seeing more from you.

Thanks Ape!
Just last night I went out and bought "The Animators Survival Kit" by Richard Williams. Man, I feel like I'm already learning a lot. I can't keep my hands off the book!
I will definitely be posting more soon. I'm going to start out with various walk cycles and work from there.

I am pretty excited about all of this. I mean, making a cartoon has been one of my 2 goals in life, the other has been to become a graphic designer and illustrator, which is what I do now.
That animation I showed was actually for work.

Anyway, check back for more stuff from me!
Thanks again, Ape.

Hello,
Also, I'm torn between using Flash, Toon Boom or Anime Studio. I know flash pretty well, but am still unsure what software would be best.

Nice work. I like your visual style.

Having used both Flash and Toon Boom, I would recommend sticking with Flash. Personally, my experience with Flash (having used it since it was FutureSplash) has been overwhelmingly positive (even though it's been frustrating from time to time). However, I have nothing good to say about Toon Boom Studio. As I don't like ragging on other products, I'll leave it at that. Since a lot of these products now have a time-limited 'try before you buy' version, I'd recommend you doing just that and coming to your own conclusions.

As for what I use on a day-to-day basis, I have a 'use the best tool for the job' philosophy, so I'm not afraid to pay for quality and stability. If you look at Adobe's CS3 product line (Flash, After Effects, Premiere, Illustrator, Photoshop) I think you'll find that the tight integration across their products will provide you a level of flexibility (to produce the kinds of images like those you're displaying in your animation) that other products simply cannot match. Having reviewed the competition, I think that you'll be happy if you stay with Adobe's products. They're well supported and widely used across various industries. But, in the end, you need to use what works best for you (or your employer). Hope this helps.

Good luck in your future animating,
