B'ini Gallery - Push

I mainly work in 3D and one of the most common projects is a character pushing a heavy object. My concept is to have a character trying to put one of the massive stones in place at Stonehenge. When he succeeds, he relaxes and leans against the stone which topples and knocks down the rest of the stones - eventually getting smushed by the last stone in the circle . He becomes the first human sacrifice of Stonehenge.

I have the book "Force" which I intend to use as a reference. A challenge for me has been to make my characters dynamic, they're often quite static and my drawings tend to be, too. So I want to push myself to get more movement, action and force into my drawings. Here's a quick sketch, but I feel it lacks power, particularly in the arms.

I'll translate my poses to a 3D model and animate the sequence. But I think I need to gain a better understanding of biomechanics.

But seriously...I think it's a good idea to think story even when you work on the "basics". In this case I like your idea. Should be alot of fun to animate.

I have the same problem w/ static looking characters. Sounds like you have a good resource in that book for helping fix that...and being aware of it IMO is a big part of fixing anything!!

It looks like you may be going more "realistic" than cartoony with your characters.

If so, I wonder if it might help to actually put some framework of skeleton and muscles in your "design" sketches. This may help you see where things are a bit easier.

Funny idea, I'd say buy some dominoes first..

It would give the figure more weight if he was pushing lower down on the block. You would probably use one of your shoulders against the block as well (the outstreched arms don't work so well pushing something so heavy.

Ps. you could check out the scene in Herculese(disney animated feature) where he knocks down the pillars of the market, it would be great reference for you.

He could be pushing it with his arms out smoothly at first, then it gets stuck just before where he wants it. He pushes it the shoulder way and depending how cartoony you want to make it(and how much time you want to spend on it)
He could either: jump kick it in frustration, making it topple and start falling over the other way, he freaks out, runs around the block almost being crushed trying to hold it up and then accidentally sends it toppling in the opposite direction, resulting in his death(preferably with a twitching limb sticking out from under it)
Or: you just show him pushing hard the shoulder way until the block is almost in place where it gets stuck, there he gives it a good smash and it teeters, almost doesn't fall, then does domino the henge and crush the druid to death.

Looks and sounds great... can't wait to see it animated... as for the rough thumbnail (not the storyboard) it looks fine but if I were to suggest I would say usually in an actual act of applying force no joints are ever locked I suppose to better the chance of any reaction and to further the chance of a continuation of an applicable action, if that makes any sense... but if it's going to be a cartoon like than I guess anything goes... all the best

thanks for the feedback and reference. I'm slacking already! But work has been busy ... will do more quick sketches in the morning.

I like the idea of adding some skeletal elements to give it some structure.
