Heya peoples

Im a guy, Irish, 17, hopefully doing animation in college next year.

Im gonna start this thread with some pics from my portoflio with which i applied to college then ill put up some sketchies!

Nice work Ru, esspecially for someone in highschool. I hope you are able to find a good art school in Ireland where you can further develop your drawing skills as well as learn animation.

Ireland has a pretty good animation history. Primary animation was done in Ireland for many of Don Bluth's animated features. Also Boulder Media is there. They're the studio that animated half of the first few seasons of Fosters. It's all being animated in Burbank California now that Boulder is animating "El Tigre" for Nickelodeon.

Once again, good luck and keep up the good work.

...we must all face a choice, between what is right... and what is easy."

I've met quite a few of the Irish people who used to work for Bluth. Some of them now have jobs at studios here in Germany.

And nice sketches, of course. I like it when there's texture!

Thanks for the comments guys :D

here's a simple walk cycle i also did for my portoflio, sorry bout the file size!!

EDIT: oh yeh, the nose is messed up, in the final one its just striaght and not floppy :)

That's quite nice. It's got a really solid weight to it (you know how sometimes animated things seem to float in the air...).
You're going to have a pretty good portfolio, I think.

"One of the major difficulties Trillian experienced in her relationship with Zaphod was learning to distinguish between him pretending to be stupid just to get people off their guard, pretending to be stupid because he couldn't be bothered to think and wanted someone else to do it for him, pretending to be outrageously stupid to hide the fact that he actually didn't understand what was going on, and really being genuinely stupid." ~Douglas Adams, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

You have some good work. That's a really well done foot (and hand, but the foot's outstanding). It's got a great torque to it. And the expressions on the faces are really nice, more fluid than posed, which is good for animation, eh?
Also, I really like that stylized head at the bottom right of your page of sketches.

Question though: Do you know what the animation industry is like over in Ireland? Are there a lot of opportunities to get into the work/education, or is it more limited? Growing, small, has-just-exploded-into-hyperactivity-like-the-U.S.?
Just curious about how the industry is like in other countries.

Keep posting!

hey man thanks for the reply, this place isnt as fast moving as some other boards i frequent, but i like it here

Hm, i think here in Ireland, animation is about to take off over the next few years, there isnt much goin on right now, but there have been more courses popping up all over the country, job opportunities are fairly sparse methinks, but did you know that that cartoon network cartoon, uh whats it called...foster's home for imaignary friends? thats made here!

But there isnt much going right now except for small telelvision parts and advertising, if it doesn't grow soon, i would prob see myself moving to america or maybe france at some stage, but that is looking far ahead indeed lol

was also considering doing a master's in scotland, but like i said, lot's of time for things to change!

Not a problem. It is a little slow, but it makes up for it time three by being full of people with a ton of experience and great input and information!

That sounds about like what I've heard, that's it's been growing slowly but isn't, like, non-existent. But I didn't know Fosters was made in Ireland. That's really interesting, especially since (I think) it's one of the first shows made entirely in Flash...or something like that.
I've been thinking about eventually moving to England or Scotland (haven't gotten to visit Ireland yet) eventually, but I wasn't sure what sort of job market there would be. But, like you, I've got a ways to go before that's something to worry about.

Good luck getting into the schools you want!
