First Salvo Fired to Formally Fight Forum Spam

As of now, all new AWN Forum registrations will be moderated. A new registrant will be granted posting access only to the New Member forum. Until that user has their access permissions manually changed by a moderator, they will not have the ability to post in any of the other forums.

Let's see how this works for a few weeks. For all of you new registrants who read this note, please understand that we are taking this step of "moderation" in order to make the forums a better place for you as well as all of us to spend some quality "spam free" forum time.

I like the Pros

I just joined today. and was inpressed with the security / filtering befor I finished logging in.

Thank you in advance, if this is the care you take of the chat forums I cant wate to get into the meat of the text.

To each, there own. I'll take understanding. :D

It will take time to weed out those spammers already registered

The new system, other than taking more admin time, is working well. I've added a mandatory field in the registration that basically requires people to say a sentence or two about themselves. Spam bots just enter gibberish. Easy to spot and ban/delete.

So, the door has really been shut - we're still going to have to remove the hidden spammers that crop up.

I really hope this solution works. Then we can talk about animation without this nasty stuff to ignore.

Sweeeeeeet!!!

...we must all face a choice, between what is right... and what is easy."

Less than 24 hours, already deleted 30 spam registrations

This is going to give me tennis elbow. I have 9 registrants left that I'm waiting to see if they post. I've deleted 30 obvious ones.

Jeesh.

Looks like you better lock down the VFX backdoor or all your hard work will be for naught.

We are looking at ways to try

We are looking at ways to try to eliminate the anonymous "snarky" members of the animation community from the Guild blog as well.  We thought removing the anonymous commenting capability was the way, but now that seems to have been circumvented.

Amid and Brew seems to have a system in place that works, and I hope yours does too.
