freelance animation charge

£500 a week for traditional 2d animation is pretty good isnt it?

It depends on a lot of things. What kind of 2D animation? More than one character? Lots of effects? Just doing ruffs keys, or clean keys? Is there a footage quota for the week? Lots of things affect how good the pay is.
Is that wage good in the UK for ANY job, or just average?

Based on my experience, if you can pay your rent, bills and most of your monthly food on ONE week's wage, then its considered good.

£500 a week is what an imbetweener in the industry would get, but as a young animator working on music videos i can't really charge a massive amount. I spose 500£ should cover rent, but tax will bring it down to about 350£.

Then its NOT "pretty good".

to be honest i'm finding it hard to find many bands/musicans that can afford 500£ a week as it ends up being around 6500£ for the video.

Hiya NIck (and Ken),

500 pounds a week...thats around $975. That's not bad for 2D I guess.
For a beginning animator for a music video, that's not bad either. But it depends.

But Ken's right, animating what? For whom? What time frame? What other tasks need be done besides animation (storyboarding, setup, rigging, etc).

I've worked on a number of music videos and they're usually pretty low-end, budget-wise.
Last year, I worked on one for an artist for V2 Music (Moby/White Stripes) through a production company in LA and they got themselves suckered into getting paid $10k for the entire deal (including everyone that worked on it, not just the animators).
It was a slow time for me, just got started, it had a nice look, a nice big client and the agency was a friend of a friend of mine who recommended me so I took the job. I got paid less than minimum wage but I think it was worth it, they didnt have more anyway and they paid me quite a chunk out of their not-so-sizable budget.

My first video was the same, I pretty much ended up losing money on that (how is that possible? DOn't ask). It was bad.
And I've recently had requests for MV's but I just can't afford to do them anymore unless there's some actual money involved beyond "friendship prices".

So $977 a week is not bad. :)
