B'ini Gallery (Lacrosse Dogs)

I am a lost soul and I hope this thread will help me stay on track - or even find a track. The plan is to start with an idea (got that), work out sketches and character development, come up with a story line, story board that, and then animate it. Just putting it in writing makes me feel I've accomplished something.

Backround - enrolled in a 3D modeling/animation graduate program (2 classes per semester), work full time (graphic designer), have 2 kids, house, husband, and a dog (Golden Retriever). I think "overwhelmed" is the word for me right now -- but I feel so compelled to do something, I started this thread.

So ... the Idea.

"Lacrosse Dogs" - a middleschool team of lacrosse players, in the locker room, on the bus, on the field and in the mud.

Application - well, I took one class of modeling in Maya and am currently in an XSI class - so for this semester I'll stick with XSI (see... lost). I think the characters will mostly be equipment on a very simple body/frame (sketches this weekend)

Work flow: equipment sketches/model drafts this weekend. I hope to have something new every week. If all goes well, it might end up being my final project (May).

Stay on track ....

What a week! Although I don't have a lot to show for it, I've been busy with this project in mind. I've started the animation portion of my XSI class and my concept of a Lacrosse player/animation was approved so I will work on it for the rest of the semester. My teacher recommended a simple walk/jog cycle to shoot for and once we accomplish that, we can try other things.

Saturday went to a studentfilmakers.com workshop with cinematographer Roy Wagner (CSI, House, Rikers and many more). Too much info to put down now, but will update as I put my thoughts together on lighting, camera work, digital technology and telling one's story.

More video exploration.

Work with the Animator's Survival Guide on arms and elbows - might have some sketches about that.

If it could keep you going, and keep you on track, you've got my attention. I'll follow this each week. I'd like to see how something homegrown like that could turn out if you don't lose interest.

some sketches

Thanks SL for the support. Always appreciated.

To add a little more to my Gallery, here's some images from my Fall '04 Maya modeling class:

It's a sad and sorry website, yet another thing on the To Do list.

Back to my sketch assignment - I included some hockey sketches, I had a goalie character in mind - a smallish kid made huge by all the equipment - but my son convinced me to go with lacrosse (LaX).

LaX

Goals (pun intended??)

I'm trying to stylize/simplify the equipment, but I really need to understand it first, so I'm going to continue with detailed drawings, like the glove, and I'll work on some 3D models at the same time. I have a rough version of a helmet that I'll post later in the week.

Also want to concentrate on speed and impact - how to make the characters look like their going fast (or slow or ready but not moving) and what happens when they collide.

Major equipment news - I got a camcorder this weekend (as a family/school investment) so I hope to work on some motion capture and fully exploit my kids as best as I can. Funny, my normally camera-shy 14yo. is a ham when it comes to video.

As for my youngest, Don't be surprised if some Little League sketches pop up now and again.

A film project is in the works - "The Pine" - a 5-10 minute short on the Pinewood Derby. Not sure if it will stay as video - it would make a neat 3D project. Speaking of which - saw the "Cars" preview on the "Incredibles" DVD. Not a Nascar fan - but my 7yo was interested.

I don't know if I'm just jaded, but I've been underwhelmed by the latest 3D features - "Sharktale" I really didn't like and the "Incredibles" had me looking at my watch a few times (and rather bothered by the torture and killing scenes). I don't have a lot of hope for "Robots" but of course I'll see it. Shrek 2 had me in tears it was so funny.

So, even as I struggle with my own design limitations, I need to remind myself - the play's the thing. Good writing can't be beat.

Meanwhile ... 5 semesters later ...

Resurrecting this thread as I hope to do a lot of drawing between summer and fall classes. I'm starting my thesis in the fall and need a place to put some pics.

very well done. Awesome woer, very well done.

...

Hey there, you got motivation, thats the main thing in drawing. Work hard and every day ( what you sure allready do)
That you're following 3D classes is perfect. I'm a modeler to.
I saw you're grasshopper... you really have to wath in the smallest detail when you make something like that. The basic geometry is ok, now finetuning.

grts

Hi B'ini,

hummmmmm? school must take up a lot of your time. kids too? Believe me I know that one hahahaha. But I'd love to see more of your work. So what is your thesis on?
