State Of Animation In India......

Dear Animation World readers,

I wanted to open this thread, to start a discussion on the state of 2d & 3d animation in India, particularly covering questions such as:

1. What is the current status of animation work in India?

2. Do CG animation has achieved a commercial and artistic revolution in India?

3. Who are the leading players participating in animation in India

4. Where are the centres for animation talent excellence in India?

5.Has transition from pencils to pixels been easy for studios or vice versa?

Please post on this thread. I greatly appreciate any information ,suggestions OR advice. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Sincerely,

I wanted to open this thread, to start a discussion on the state of 2d & 3d animation in India, particularly covering questions such as:

1. What is the current status of animation work in India?
Animation work comes in because it is cheap. even then the quantity of work coming in is very limited when compared to a place like South Korea.

2. Do CG animation has achieved a commercial and artistic revolution in India?
There has been no revolution. there is no organisation, or proper training of the art and artist. there is a serious lack of originality and funding.

3. Who are the leading players participating in animation in India
There are a few studios of varying sizes namely Crest,Escotoonz, DataQuest, Toonz
4. Where are the centres for animation talent excellence in India?
There are no such centres but hyderabad and banagalore have the concentration of artists.
5.Has transition from pencils to pixels been easy for studios or vice versa?
bulk of the work happening is pencils. the transition is quite slow and very few artists transition from 2d to 3d because of resistance to change. some studios like crest have taken the initiative however. but the majority of the 3d talent coming in is crap.

Whts the state of Animation in India .. at present

hey guys,

this is a intersting topic but unfortuanately we cudn't hav many posting here..
Alrite Now how do u see the state of animation in india..
is it still becoz in India the production cost is very less.. i mean is it a compromise with the production quality or Indian studios hav really become capable enough to produce animation to international standards.?

I keep being solicited from companies from india, to give them work or partner with my current productions. I'm sure there are capable companies and artists there, but they are not represented in the companies that have contacted me in the last 2 years. Most have sites, work, and reels that look as though they were all done in the early 90's by highscool students that have produced nothing but e-greeting cards...

I think for the animation companies that are viable they really need to separate themselves - and the govnt has to really put a focus on what is Good coming out of India to have a hope of living up the the current media hype - and take advantage of the way its described in the media. There are too many inexperienced companies, and individuals (in my experience) trying to catch a media 'wave' that has described the situation falsely... trying to grasp at the 'easy money' from production companies in the west - and the idea that the cost of outsourcing to india is low...

i think that is a huge part of the answer. The govt has categorically said that they will not support or offer animation a break in any way shape or form. Some state govts are offering incentives to animation set ups but even there it has to be a sizeable set up and not a 4 man team out of a living room.

as for inexperienced companies - well people have to start somewhere. but like you said, they are trying to catch part of a wave and i hope people arent foolish enough to fall for a low cost angle.
