Not too long ago, I completed some animation tests which, although were considered fairly good, were not enough to land me the job. Just today I had another opportunity open up for me in which I was asked to deliver some samples of my work. Would it be a bad idea to include these previous tests along with my portfolio? They're very recognizable characters, however I never signed any forms restricting me from using them as portfolio pieces, and I feel that they would be of benefit in possibly landing this job. As you might be able to tell, I'm still trying to get my foot in the industry, so I'm not familiar with all the do's and dont's. Any advice you guys might have for me would be greatly appreciated.
I think it's fine for you to include your test animation in your demo. If you are really worried about it, maybe put some text over the shot stating "test animation" or something to that effect. If they see it on your demo reel but it's not on your resume that you worked on the show, most people will assume that it was a test, an will simply ask you about it. Just don't say you animated on the show when you didn't.
