siggraph 2006... anyone going?

hello all!
I know that it is a bit early but I was wondering if anyone is going to attend siggraph this year. I managed to (just about) get some money together to go. It will also be my very first time in the us!!
so it would be interesting if you could also share some past experiences at this festival.

Not going this year, but Boston is one of my favorite cities in the country. Beautiful, and with loads of history.

A couple of things to do if you have the time while you're at the show:

Walk the Freedom Trail through downtown. Takes you past all the historical locales, like the Old North Church, Faneuil Hall, etc. It's literally a line down the middle of the sidewalk - can't miss it.

Go see a Red Sox game if they're in town while you're here - nothing like a ball game at Fenway.

At SIGGRAPH itself:

First of all, it's a conference and trade show, not a festival. Let's not let that can of worms burst open again...:D

If you have a full conference pass, go see a few panels and papers outside your main area of focus that sound interesting to you. It always helps broaden your knowledge base.

Go to the animation screenings as well as Electronic Theater. Every time I've been there there has been at least one film that didn't make it into ET that was better than half of those that did.

Check out the emerging technologies area. There's always something interesting (if not always practical) going on in there.

The show floor is always fun. Take a suitcase that's at least partially empty to carry back all the promo items and literature that you'll accumulate. Another way to go is to ship all that stuff home via Fed Ex or your favorite shipping company, so you don't have to carry it through the airport.

Have a great time!

Are you going as a regular attendee, or as an exhibitor?

I won't be going; my employer used to go, but the show is WAY too expensive and there is no payback. A company can attend three other shows for the cost of going to one SIGGRAPH.

On the other hand, if you are going as a regular attendee, it's probably a very fun event--lots of exhibitions, new technology presented, etc. If I had lots of my own money to throw away, I'd be tempted to go alone. But I don't, and there's simply not enough concrete benefits taken away from the show to justify going.

That's my two cents.

I signed up for the student volunter program. It will be my first time attending siggraph to. I can't wait.

(not a festival, got it...)

I'll be going as a regular atendee. i think that the most valuable thing that I'll be taking from it will be the fact that were I work there's just the two of us poor animators, so it will be interesting to speak to others of our own "kind" :D
I have attended animation festivals and exhibitions both here and in the UK, so it will be interesting to see something different
