Ninjai - episodic animation

Hi Gang,

"Ninjai The Little Ninja" - I did a search in these forums for this title an came back with nothing - just wondering if any of you have watched these animations. They are really well done.

I'd be interested to hear what you think of the idea of episodic animation content delivered on the net. I know it's been done with a couple of other venues like 'Broken Saints' - but I'm kind of surprised we don't see more of it. I think the interent is a perfect medium for 2D animation. Since I am new to this medium perhaps I'm being too naive?

I agree with Meleponine. I'm not a big fan of anime and violence but Ninjai has some sort of appeal which I think is partly down to it being produced by amateurs. It's such an achievement. We all know how much effort and how long it takes to make even ten seconds of animation so to produce an animated series is much to be admired. Wouldn't we all love to achieve something like this and for it to have a comparable audience on Atom and beyond?

How about michel gagne's shadow puppets? There's some really interesting designs.

I was never a fan of Broken Saints. The navigation was a mystery and the stories hard to follow.

But I kind of like Ninja. Some of the violence is a little over the top, but what the hey, I am sure the guys putting it out are young, and feel it's cool. Eventualy they'll grow up and learn better. Anyway, they are well done. Thanks for sharing the site with us.

I could be wrong, but I suspect their use of over-the-top violence is also very much in keeping with their style of post-apocalyptic Japanese anime.

So? I've never been one to follow styles or anything for that matter. I personally just don't like it or want to watch much of it. Put's me off.

Oh, sorry - I wasn't saying that in defense of thier use of graphic violence. I was just making an observation on the genre in general.

i always had the feeling that it could be more substantial all around (and this is not a criticism just an observation)

I do like their choice of music, and the openning where the little Ninja is walking acrossed the meadow. If they would turn to stories similiar to the moral type stories that Samurai Jack told, I'd be a real follower of their work.

Maybe a little more Zen, and a little less Manga is what I am after.

Cathy have you checked out the work at Goober Productions? They are some of my favorite online stuff:

I found it interesting, but I am also not big on the blood factor. I just hope that they are making some money, for all the work they are putting into it.

WOW!!! The Goober Productions Site was INCREDIBLE!
Very impressive! So cinematic! Absolutely lovely work.
Phacker - Thanks so much for telling me about that site! :)

They (the Goober gang) are good aren't they. And I don't own stock, and I am not related to anyone there. But they keep me trying to improve my art to just try and come close to some of the stuff they have produced.

hey phacker,i haven't watched samurai jack in a while, but did that dude ever get home?

i kinda felt the story didn't make sense anymore after a few episodes,i thought the whole entire concept was for him to get home and kill that aku fella, and i found it odd that no matter how many times he sliced up aku,he just wouldn't die,so if he can't do it there, how is he gunna do it in the past.

......

As for ninjai,i thought sum of the violence was unneccasry too,i mean,if it was *Ninjai : returns to Mortal Kombat video game* i wouldn't care, but sum was just ridiculous.Eye ball eating? however its a great web animation,i still can't say i like the flash look, its really clashed with the backgrounds.

I have to say, I've been a fan of Ninjai for years. I think those guys have amazing dedications! From what I understand, none on them are even "real" animators. Mostly they are interested in special effects and martial arts (probably why all the violence). One of them just came up with this character and they decided to have a go at animation. They all have other jobs. A while back I bought a Ninjai T-Shirt, so I know they were making money in that way, but they stopped selling merchandise probably two years ago. About that time, they got a deal with AtomFilms, so they are making money from them now, but I really don't think they are bringing anything in besides their atomFilm profits. For a group that probably doesn't have much, if any, formal animation training, I think they've done an awesome job. And just look at how much everything has improved from chapter to chapter!! I agree that the flsh characters and detailed backgrounds sometimes clash, but I think they've done a great job re-creating a cel animation look in Flash.

For those who shared my interest in Ninjai.... the show has been airing on G4/Tech TV. Don't remember the name of the show it is on anymore.... since I don't have G4 with my current cable provider. It is a show that has many short animation clips and episodic animation... I think Happy Tree Friends is on it. I only watched the program once, but there some interesing and funny shorts.... and some very bad ones.
