Anybody using the newest Painter?

I own Painter 8, and was curious if it was worth the price of an upgrade for Painter 9....?

I used to love Painter, way back even when Metacreations owned it. Have to admit I haven't even openned it in years. Probably my bad.

its great, but its gunna lag if ur working at really high res.

I really dig 9 but haven't used 8, so I can't compare. You're going to need a hefty computer (and as much memory as you can afford, 1 gig minimum), especially if you want to do watercolor or ink stuff at higher than video resolution.

I am learning with Painter 9, you should ask some questions about that it has, that 8 does not have. I know that it you can save iterations, which is cool.

Thanks everyone!

After reading up more on the subject (MacAddict says upgrade from 8 to 9, for sure!) and getting input from here and another forum, I'd say it was worth the upgrade.

Now, who's lending me the 300 bones?;)

Cheers!

i've never used any previous version so i wouldn't know if its *worth the upgrade* but meh, again beware of lagging, its has a very advanced brush system unlike photoshop.

so computer slowness will occur, but sometimes its just worth it

I don't get it.

Eh!

@ Harvey: Corel Painter 8 (a "natural media" software program which I own...kinda sorta like Photoshop) did an update a while back to Painter IX (9).

Whilst some programs do upgrades every other week, and charge a tidy sum for it, at times they're not worth it (perhaps the upgrades are not what you'd use...).

Sooo, before I dished out 300 smackeroos for said upgrade, I wanted to know if anyone here on this fabulous website we call "AWN" had infact made the leap to the next upgrade...and found it worthwhile.:)

...and it appears that it is, indeed.

Cheers!

I was wondering about the upgrade myself, so I'm glad you started this thread. But $300? The box version of the upgrade is only $199 on corel's website:

Things have been way too heavy around here!

Just my attempt at levity, Harv!

Thanks for the info Sharvonique, that'll save me a hundred scamolians!!!

(not sure where I pulled that one from, Wade!)

Splatman:D

Scamolians. Smackeroos. Are you using a new currency that I'm not aware of?

100 clams?

Splatman:D

Isn't that what they use down there in Bedrock? I'm going there this afternoon. I hope the exchange rate is good.

Just make sure it's in a big bag with a dollar sign on it.

Down the hatch!

I don't know if this is an issue with Painter 8 as well?, but recently I got Painter 9 - and with my Cintiq21 there's this crippling glitch. Past a certain point on the right side of my monitor, there's an invisible, vertical barrier that 'throws' the stroke back the other way, when passed with the pen nib. So if you draw in that direction and hit that line, your stroke is abruptly cut off and you get an ugly leftward streak across anything you were just doing. This also happens with Painter Essentials. :|
One can resize the window, I suppose, so that you can't make a stroke past that point - but in the end you're losing about a sixth of your working space, in that case.

So anybody with a Cintiq ought to steer clear until there's a fix. :|

Don't get me wrong everyone, but I always hestitate these days before I update any Corel program. I used to buy each new release from 7 to 10 with the Graphics suite, but 10 was loaded with so many bugs, and patches were really slow to be released, in fact they kind of put us off until the next version. That I am still using my patched 10, and when I really need to do something intensive I drop back down to 9.

I liked Painter when I used it, but like I said before I haven't openned it in years. I'd download a demo and give it a test drive before I shelled out the shamolies. They used to offer demos for download? Maybe they don't anymore.
