Panel Discussions?

well i was in a meeting early on in the day and it turned out that i gave the group a chance to voice their thoughts (instead of hoarding the conversation as i tend to)

turned out that they had some solid info to share.

i was wondering if we could have panels like this ? or one on one situations where people like Ape, Ken Davis and others talk about certain topics. I know you can get a lot of what they say in threads but i think that single topic with solid questions would be a great resource for everyone.

?

what i meant was say we pair topics with certain people -

Ape talks about Flash animation and how things work in studios - then we organize a set of questions to ask him and that thread stays updating.

i meant a separate thread just so its organized....

Noob!

back in my porn days, oh wait, wrong thread :)

i came out of college worked an investment bank, didnt like it, moved back to India, worked real estate, didnt like it, started a graphic design firm and figured it wasnt as fast paced as i liked and then i took some time off to research animation and in about 4 months i set up my studio.

Aside from my personal work, I doubt that the companies I worked for in the past would give me permission to show the work I did for them since I'm no longer working with them. Although you could see the work on DVD now.

My vote is for the Cafe since it's more of a free form discussion. The Show and Tell is for users posting their personal work.

i agree. if someone adds something its their perorgative, depending on the question but i think the Cafe would be the right place. Again, i think itll work best if its organised.

or if we dont want to pair topics we can pick individuals and just ask questions to them.

ah, screw it.

I didn't mean to burst your bubble Skinny, but setting something up where only certain folks could reply seems sort of like saying your comments are worthwhile but your's aren't. Here at Awn everyone has had a voice. I'd like to see a tutorial thing opened so those efx and stuff that have been really informative would have/hold a spot here and not fall off the page, but to limit exchange, just seems wrong.

Okay, well who's gonna start it off? Which AWN member and which aspect of animation?

A panel discussion is a good idea, but it makes more sense to transcribe one at a film festival or comics convention and publish it in the magazine.

Maybe someone can get a bunch of animators together in a chat room.

Really, it sounds like pie-in-the-sky, unless someone wants to commit to putting in the effort to organize it. Next topic ...

I have "The Incredebles" and the animators who do commentary are great to listen to. This should be done twice a year, with different animators or at least once a year.

Perhaps you should think of an aspect of animation you want to learn about and ask the group if there is someone here that does it.

Isn't that the way the forums work anyway? What would make this different?

I guess its just how I'm interpreting things, but I would think someone would start a thread called, for example Character Design Panel Discussion, and anyone who had questions about that would post them and anyone qualified to answer would answer, or a select chosen would answer.

It sounds like are more intense way of asking and getting information. So basicly it will be like those open chat forums where some hollywood person does a Q/A for an hour.

Has everyone forgotten that there other forums here besides Show and Tell and the Cafe. The DeskTop is supposed to be for technical/technique questions, the Business forum for those that relate to the business aspects, and Education etc....I think there are forums and organization enough already. If you want to start some sort of panel discussion, just start one in the appropriate forum. If you only want certain folks to reply, that's a different ball of wax. But why reinvent the wheel?

oh cmon skinny,u've only just discovered that other people have knowledge and ideas too :p :p and u call yourself a buisness man hehe.

Do u mean like a question and answer threads, they have those over on cgtalk forums with industry professionals *obviously more on he 3d side*

i think that would be a great idea for here. :D

because most threads are either need oriented or spur of the moment. something like this is probably more suited for a television interview a classroom or the AWN mag but since we cant do all of that.

anyway. was just an idea.

well it wasnt an animation related discussion. not something they are concerned with but on a whim i bounced it off them (and their ideas were interesting just not usable :))

i dont know about CGtalk but thats what i meant, maybe a question answer thread of some sort.

Start it up Skinny. Since it was your idea, you can lead out with the first question and the format you'd like.

I do have a similar thread in the Animator's Desktop forum on Flash character animation.

actually its not a pie in the sky because the chances of anyone here going to a festival collecting people and asking questions is pretty much nil.

so we make do with what we have. my basic idea here is how Ape handeled the Flash animation thread.

im sure there is shit people here want to know.

I wouldn't mind if people were interested in hearing about layout, matchmoving and to a lesser extent previs in the sfx world.

Sounds like a good idea. Ask away.

Once upon a time, the Classical Animation Society hosted a panel discussion on character design that was "by students for students". It was very successful.

Sounds like a great idea, especially with the amount of talent that posts on this forum.

I don't see how it would differ from existing threads where novices ask questions and professionals answer them.
Is the difference that only a few forum members would be allowed to contribute?

Maybe something like that would work better in the magazine section.

Ape was running one on "Fosters" for a while that was the most popular animation thread I've ever seen. How did it work for you, Ape?

actually i have a question for skinny ,since i don't know much about him,i wanted to ask did u have any previous animation studio experience before starting your studio,or did u come straight from college or something?

Hmmm, a thread where ape and Ken can give advice, I don't see why not, but I want a forum where newbies can go to have fun and learn more about the Animation...no, the Industry of Arts, I have seen in the ani cafe a thread yet once again asking for good animation books:rolleyes: I am so over it.

We need to reformat or innovate our fantastic AWN forum, into that which borders both adult and teenage college societys, one that will appeal to all the masses.
As for the state of the forum, it is pretty ostentatious, better than most forums I've ever seen, but I want a Newbie section, would any one agree with me?:)

Well, which forum should the panel discussions be in? The Cafe or Show and Tell? I'm assuming that if someone wanted to participate, they would want to upload some sort of example to go with it.

That's pretty much the definition of "pie in the sky": something that probably won't happen.

So go start your thread in the Animation Desktop forum, Skinny; or we can continue discussing what a good idea it would be to start a thread. Maybe I'll also start a thread about starting a thread. Maybe I'll do you one better and start a thread about starting a thread about starting a thread.

Am I the only one who's confused about what sounds confused about why I'm confused and why I'm confused for?  Oh..no! I think I'm about to hurl:confused:

I like the freedom of exchange that the forum already provides, I question who would set up the criteria for such selections. I'll take my chances with posing a thread and starting a dialogue just the way things are, you guys can start your potentionally publishable thing. It smacks me as snobbism. Tony and the others were always ready to answer questions and extend discussions on technical things.
