Am I the youngest one here?

I'm 15, is anyone my age? Or anyone at least under 18? If not I am the youngest person here. Not that I mind. I'm not complaining.

At the risk of sounding paranoid...

It's disclaimer time:

*If you choose to post your true age on the internet, you do so at your own risk. Once you publish this personal information, you have no control over who gets access to it (honest folk and molesters alike).

Okay, I'm finished now. Carry on.

I'm 17 and getting a lot of crap from the other members because of it.

Uh, dude... that's not why you've been getting crap...

hehehee..

I'm a bit jealous of you young'uns. If your checking out this site and learning the lessons available on it you'll be way ahead when it's time to do an animation school! Try to find a life drawing class and don't give up! that's my 2 cents.

thanks doubt i just jumped in since I'm also 15 years old and just started an animation class this week. i dont think that ill ever be able to do what animators do though seems impossible for me. any advice on what i should do.

I promise myself i will become an animator :D

When you first learned to tie your shoes, did you ever think you'd learn how? It's just a matter of practice and dedication. Your style may be different from others but if you bother to learn the basics, you can still carry it off. But if it's something you really want to do, learning the basics and practice will get you there, even if it can't guarrantee you a job, you can always publish your own stuff on the net, and who knows your work/style may catch on if it means a lot to you. Even if it doesn't if it allows you an outlet for your creative vision it's worth it.

thanks phacker, from what you said makes me feel like its possible even though it looks like an increadible task to accomplish

Singers have to sing, painters have to paint! If folks gave themselves permission to follow their gut voices, there'd be less violence in this world. Maybe you wouldn't measure up in some circles as far as a success quotient, but we all turn to dust, and does your financial portfolio really have that much weight in the scheme of eternal dust?

Certainly if you have responsibilities and people you're are responsible for you have to take care of those, but lately I've been seeing twelve year olds trying to plan their futures based on a certain income outcome. Life is funny, you think you can plan it and accomplish all your goals when you are young, but as you get older you find, that it isn't always possible and someone else always seems to have more power than you do to effect those transcient goals. The only real control you have is over yourself and following your "bliss" (Joseph Campbell metaphor). Even if sometimes that "bliss" has to take a second or third position to get your responsibilities addressed. You should never lose sight of what it is.

Joe Campbell is one of my heros

BILL MOYERS: "Do you ever have the sense of... being helped by hidden hands?"

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: "All the time. It is miraculous. I even have a superstition that has grown on me as a result of invisible hands coming all the time - namely, that if you do follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in your field of bliss, and they open doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be."

John F. Kennedy challenged this country to go to the moon and back before the end of the 60's. At that time we had barely launched a satellite into Earth orbit successfully.

The folks at NASA didn't sit down and figure out how to get to the moon all at once. They broke down the task into manageable steps and built one success on another, until the ultimate goal was reached.

Reaching your goals in animation should be approached the same way. Worry about the basics first, and build on those until you get to where you want to go. Attend to the little details, and the big ones will take care of themselves.

And keep in mind that every animator you admire was in the same position you are now at some point in their lives. And they got to where they are by working at it a bit at a time.

Have fun!

16 now, 14 when i joined

And I've been following Gabe since he joined, he has really progressed and challenged himself with new skills. And he's reaching them. Never be afraid you don't measure up at first ask questions, and keep working on it.

Hey, Cathy I see we have another Joseph Campbell fan here. I've forgot the other person that said they follow his theories, but there are a few of us here now.

I like Campbell's stuff too, though I've not read through it extensively. One of his "students" Chris Vogler wrote a book ( The Writer's Journey) that I really dig.

Perserverance is probably the core traits amongst successful commerical artists in todays market. With so many family and social magnets pulling us away from our bliss and into "safe" occupations, it really is a battle to stick with it long enough to make a living at it.
I know far too many of my students that have given it their best, only to walk away after one or two ( and sometimes BAD) experiences.

My own personal experience is that its NEVER been impossible to do this stuff.
I approach it like trying to breach a wall, offer me a tiny crack to exploit and I can work at it and eventually breach the barrier to inside. I'm always looking for for those tiny cracks, and I always have. Even though I've been in the biz a long time, there's things that I still cannot do............yet. Painting, computer stuff, that sort of thing. I simply do not close the door on those things.

There is SO MUCH information now on how to do these things, and so easily accessible the ONLY obstacle is finding the time.

Man, I tellya, if that was all it was 30 years ago........things would be a LOT different now.

I agree, although I have no idea what a "safe" occupation is these days.

I was on a flight recently sitting next to a guy who was in chip design sales. I asked him how he got into that, and he said he was a chip design engineer whose job was outsourced overseas, so he had no choice but to go into marketing. As we talked, I couldn't help but think about how my parents also urged me to have a "safe" degree to "fall back on", and that engineering certainly would have been high on that list. Yet here I was, sitting next to a guy who wasn't doing what he loved, but what he had to because his "safe" job went away.

For the little guy I don't think there are any "safe" jobs left. Even if you do exemplary work. Only those with political clout seem to be able to even screw up and find work like little Mr. "Browny" of the Fema debacle in LA. Funny how the worst screw up in Washington, can get thrown out and land on their feet, and little guy has to undergo a physical, credit check, multiple references etc., and they still have trouble finding work, because there are so many of them standing in line wanting those few imaginary "secure" jobs.

I'm 17 and getting a lot of crap from the other members because of it.

I'm an Animation Producer and I can draw better than my entire class, but what's even worse.....I'm self thought.

It's nice to see I'm not the only "youngblood" at AWN.:D

We should form a membership club, here at AWN, we'll share cars and mansions and talk about girls all night long, yeah! we should really do that.

All in favor.....say...Cheese!:D

Hahahaha... You may be one of the youngest, Spooze, but don't let THAT stop you... Maybe you should be an "animation producer". I hear that there are big animation production houses who hire young kids, not even out of high-school, as producers. Better yet... Go even bigger! Maybe you can run the newly merged Disney/Pixar!

Canada and the USA have laws regarding contracts with minors.
A 17 year old studio exec is absurd because how do you hold someone accountable who is underage and not obliged to honour the contract they have signed? Our fraud here didn't bring up the one exclusion to this from the outset.
He simply doesn't know what he's talking about, and never has.

I will bring this discussion over to the more appropriate thread so as not to hijack this one ;)
