Corpse Bride

Hi friends,

A few days back i watched Corpse Bride and was completely mesmerized with the last scene where corpse bride turns to butterflies...n itz said that the movie is done entirely in stop motion....Any one has any idea how they did this scene.....( or is it another grave misunderstanding ;-) )...
Would love to hear more on this......

lol funny you should mention the last scene, Tim Allen the animator who had the privileged to do this last final coool scene came into our Uni today for a chat about the animation business, his background how he started out and his amazing showreel.

Hes an awesome animator and did such work with Fireman Sam/Postman pat/Corpses Bride. just to say afew and worked along side other animators who did Nightmare Before christmas/Bugs life and Toy story. :)

I rented the DVD Thursday and personally I liked Wallace and Gromit, as a movie, a lot better.
But that doesn't mean I DISLIKED Corpse Bride ;)
The animation in Corpse Bride was AMAZING. I really loved watching the making of stuff to see how they did it. They put SO MUCH work into it I respect the movie even just for that.

James

enjoyed it

I really liked it, something about it though made me constantly compare it mentally to Nightmare which was in some way a distraction.Taking it on its own the second time I saw it was much more enjoyable.

Sorry L_Finston....i was so excited to know the secret behind the scenes..thtz y...i never meant to "spoil" any ones love to enjoy these
wonderful movies...neways thanks for the replies

I think they should've played more with the world-of-the-dead setting and given it a meatier ending. I definitely like Nightmare better.

Yeah, the ending of CB was a crock... I was really disappointed with a lot of the film. Animation was solid, performances pretty good, decent story and characters, but... The frikkin. Musical. Numbers.

I hate musical numbers, especially when they suck as hard as these. Lyrics written by apes. Could've done lots of amazing things in the land of the dead, instead they're freaking day-glo song and dance routines. Feh! At least Nightmare had some damn catchy tunes.

The butterflies were composites, no doubt, and I thought they looked kinda crap : /

Overall, the animation and production values of Wallace and Gromit impressed me loads more. Didn't hurt to have some life to the story as well. Get it? Life- to the- Corpse- yeesh. I'm going to sleep...

Hi Windchimes

Heres a link to a talk on the making of the corpse by one of the animators. Phil Dale talks about the scene you want info on in the talk. You can download it from here I hope.

All the best!
Potter

Twas CG done by the Moving Picture Company, I believe.

Did I ever tell you guys that I went to the CB set? It was a pretty impressive experience. The puppets caught mid-shot look like they're about to spring to life at any moment...

I think you're being a little harsh. I usually don't like musicals either but I think they went well with Corpse Bride, really gave it a lot of life and made it seem like a bigger production. I think this is some of Danny Elfmans best music in a long time as well. I love Wallace and Gromit but the animation in Corpse Bride is just on a different level. I'd give story to Wallace and Gromit but the animation in Corpse Bride makes it a better experience to watch IMO just because it was so phenominally made.

I'd hoped Rick Heinrichs would take part in the CB project. All in all, I was fond of what I saw but the whoe thing left me hungry. I think they should've played more with the world-of-the-dead setting and given it a meatier ending. I definitely like Nightmare better.

Yes and if you're a fan you should check out the dvd site here Corpse Bride DVD site Corpse Bride has got to be one of the best animated movies made in the last ten years. If any movie deserves and academy award it should be Corpse Bride. It was perfect!

That's the trouble w/ some folks around here, methinks. Good animation a great film maketh not. Still, CB wasn't a bad film at all, just didn't excite me like W+G or Howl's.

As to thr elfman- hehehe, we'll just agree to disagree on that one. I think elfman's lost it, totally out of ideas and off his rocker. All his stuff sounds the same, but in CB I distinctly heard bits of Beetlejuice. Like, not "that sounds like beetlejuice!" more like- "that's Beetlejuice."

Dunno, Burton and Elfman seem to have lost it. But I go back and watch their other work and I wonder if they ever really had it. Scissors and Beetles aside. And Jack.

Couldn't agree more. And I'd add "About good animation the business people careth not."

And I'd add, "Am I perhaps or -- backwards writing at good as nearly not I'm."

heh

there's business folk around here other than Finston?

Not around here - business people in the industry. I've said for years it's impossible to make a compelling argument to the business side of the house based entirely on the quality of the animation. The business people don't care about that - they care about how much the film cost and how much it brings in. Plain and simple.

If you can make an argument as to how having a quality product will increase the bottom line, then you'll have their attention. But most animators talk only about quality and artistic integrity - subjects you'll never get an MBA to care about.

Rant off - flame away ;)

There are some computer assists along the way. For example, the bride's veil was stop-mo in some shots, computer in others (although all the character work was stop-mo). I have to see the shot again, but the butterfly shot may be CG.

All too true, DSB. I'm not technically in the industry yet, but as an indie outsider from film school who's lost many an opportunity to "artistic integrity..." All too true.

It's hard out there fo a pimp. : ]

I got the special edition disc here from wal-mart, im not disappointed, always loved burton movies, and im glad corpse bride showed up on dvd so soon :D

We rented CB this past weekend, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. That said, the only thing more annoying that Danny Elfman songs in a movie are Randy Newman songs in a movie. My kid seemed to like the songs, so what hell do I know...
