2d video games?

Anyone know of any video game studios that still produce 2d games? I heard Capcom doesn't produce its 2d fighters anymore, and that the only one that does is Sammy (Guilty Gear), which is in Japan

these guys do all traditional 2d games. Alien Hominid being their first. It is a 2d side scrolling shooter. It is pretty good and the animation is nice as well as the art style. they are working on a second game in the same fashion.

I forget the name of it, but it is like a beat'em'up side scrolling action game. It was shown at E3.

Golly! You need to check out The Legend Of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures on Gamecube. Totally awesome game, no matter how many players are involved.

thats a great example of 2d toon shading.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Wind Waker here, skinnylizard?

my bad.

that is what i was thinking of. spot on.

thanx jab.

Spoooze!> what else has cecroptia done? I know I've seen that art style before... but all I can think of is leisure suit larry

blinkmetoys> ah yeah, I've played that game, first saw it on newgrounds. Nice animation.

as for the zelda games... I really liked the style as well. it's just too bad stuff like that is 3d =\

one game I think would've been really fun to animate is Street Fighter: Third Strike... the 2d animation in that game is good

By the way, why do I have to learn japanese because of Metal Slug? The games are pretty simplistic action cartoon slugfests and don't come with a lot of text.

"Ye Olde Beat-em-up" or something like that. It looks great- they're using the same artist/animator that did Hominid, which is brilliant stuff.

Treasure still makes 2-D games, shooters and side-scrollers for the GBA. Handhelds are keeping 2-D alive and well.

All the animators who work on it are ex-Disney animators. I think the character designers and art directors are ex-Disney also.

That's the only thing I can think of. This is Cecropia's first project.

Seek out companies doing games for handheld devices (P2P, Gameboy, mobile phones). The technology can handle 3D, but the screen size can't (in my opinion anyway) and these companies are still doing sprite based (ie. not 3D) games.

Producing solidily ok animation since 2001.

SNK's "Metal Slug" series is still going strong and has been noted for it's detailed levels and smooth bitmap animation.

so learn japanese then :p

This company is finishing up a 2D game coming out very soon.

Almost all of the Nintendo Game Boy games are 2D/sprite based as is the mobile industry. The DS has delved some into the 3D market, but in my opinion the screen is just too small to do 3D well on it. I'd much rather a good 2D game on that system than a 3D one. It's one of it's appeals, in my opinion. I'll use the full console or especially the PC if I want to play a 3D game.
