Does Anyone Know Of Hoodwinked!!!

Hello.

Does anyone have the skinny on the CG animated film HOODWINKED?

It is to be released nation wide this weekend!

Which studio did the work- I saw something that mentioned the Weinsteins (formerly of Miramax) and Kandar (where ever that is)?

Thanks.:D

I looked it up at Rottentomatoes where it didn't score too well. Another CG flick I won't go see in a theatre come what might. Maybe on DVD. Until then I'm going to assume a narrower view: Shrek rip-off, probably.

its been in the making for some time & the Weinsteins are involved.

there's a trailer for it on the apple.com website, and honestly it doesn't look good! the animation clicks all over the place, the models are bad and the lighting is scary. here's the articles for it at animated-news.com where I first heard about it. http://www.animated-news.com/perlfect/search/search.pl?p=1&lang=en&include=&exclude=&penalty=0&q=hoodwinked&mode=all
and here's what Amid Amidi from cartoonbrew.com thought about it.

"HOODWINKED
Okay, it's no Oscar nominee, the character designs suck and the animation (despite a few nice shots) is no where near Pixar's polished perfection - but HOODWINKED caught me off guard and I found myself laughing often during the industry screening I attended this morning. I'm not recommending anyone go out and see it - but if you do, you might actually have a good time with it, as I did. The script, vocal characterizations, direction and songs (yes, songs) are very well done.

HOODWINKED opened this week at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood to qualify for Academy Award. The film, as you may have already heard, is a "Fractured Fairy Tale" spoof of Red Riding Hood, done in the style of The Usual Suspects crossed with (choke) The Family Guy. I guess I'm just here to report that the film isn't a total bust (an easy impression to get from the posters, trailers and those damn ugly character designs) - it will be interesting to see what kind of money it will generate without a full scale family marketing campaign and a brand name distributor/producer behind it."

"check it out, you know it makes sense!" http://miaumau.blogspot.com/

First, if there are any of the people who worked on "Valiant" sorry for my comments. I have a bit a problem with giving human trait to animals.

I just seen "Hoodwinked" and that is a well written movie. Very tight with excellent pacing through the whole move, well except for the end. Anyone and everyone will enjoy "Hoodwinked" so you should think about going to see it with friends.

Wow, what makes you think that you - the only person in this thread who has actually seen Hoodwinked - can critique this movie more accurately than all these people who haven't seen the movie?
Do yourself a favor, sir. Go back and re-read this thread and learn that the only way to judge a movie is from minute-long trailers or a couple of screenshots.

Maybe so, but if they expected me to go spend any money on it based on the promotional material they chose to release, they failed big time.

The important part about hoodwinked is that it was made for a only $15 million! Even though the animation looks not even close to the fluid standard we are used to seeing in feature animation, you can bet if it makes any money at all we are going to see a lot more cheap low budget CG films in theatres.

Hoodwinked was made in the Phillippines, if memory serves (CGW had an article about the show in a recent issue).

Promotional material is often misleading.

Hoodwinked is getting better reviews than Chicken Little did and I thought Chicken Little was an okay movie. It wasn't great and I'll never watch it again, but it was amusing.

Ooooh, Curious George. Now that there's a good idea. I hope.

Oh my gosh, you are so right about that! In that case I hope it fails miserably in order to hold back an onslaught of 3D movies done cheap and crappy!

You are so right, I...am...ashamed.

$15 million!? Look like only $5 million made it on screen. When the preview for this first came on the screen. I just cringed. I have no plans on seeing this even when it comes out on DVD. Seeing the preview just reminded me of bad college student CG. Some of the writing and jokes seemed pretty funny. I actually laughed out loud at the running turtle joke. I wish they upped the quality more then I'd be interested in seeing it.

Oh, I thought I read some where that the financial backer of this movie is the CEO of Blue Skyy Vodka. I have to find where I read that, but that seems like a strange source for funding. lol.

Yep, I read the same thing.

The buzz on the movie is that the character design and animation aren't great, but the story is engaging and the film is funny.

I loved the turtle gag too...

Ok found it... http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/reviews/review_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001699429
It's by Kanbar Animation and the guy invented Skyy Vodka, not "Blue Skyy."

From the trailer, I find the character designs creepy and the animation seems VERY low quality and jerky for a theatrical feature film. I mean, come on...
Jimmy Neutron has some ugly character designs but at least the ANIMATION itself was decent.

Hoodwinked Sequel Details Revealed

January 18, 2006

The Weinstein Company and Kanbar Entertainment are teaming on a sequel to their current CG-animated release Hoodwinked, to be titled Hood vs. Evil. Hoodwinked finished a hair behind Disney's Glory Road for the four-day holiday weekend.

Harvey Weinstein said the producers will double the budget of the first film (less than $20 million) to improve the animation in the sequel.

Hood vs. Evil will find a teen Red training in a distant land with a mysterious, covert group called Sisters of the Hood. She is then called upon by Nicky Flippers -- head of the Happily Ever After Agency -- who teams her with the Wolf to investigate the disappearance of Hansel and Gretel. The character of Granny, and the rest of the "Hoodwinked" gang, also return and are joined by new characters.

...

Weinstein added that he sees the franchise potentially going for two additional films.

Story was great. They did an excellent job of retelling the story for each of the characters without making it feel too repetitious. They shouldn't have revealed so much in the trailers, though... and they revealed important plot hooks too easily/early. A mystery is only as good as long as it's a mystery.

As far as the animation goes, it wasn't that impressive. Some things were really nicely done, like the squirrel character, but it wasn't enough to make up for the rest of the movie. Things like Red's eyes moving from one spot to another looked almost amateur and forced. At the expense of sounding like a snob: this is the kind of animation I see from the graduates at my school, and I would think that if you were expecting to release a nation-wide distributed movie, it would have been tweaked to perfection.

Critical comments aside, I liked it. I thought it was enjoyable and I didn't mind spending the money to see it. The trailer didn't really grab me, either. The story of a fledgling independant studio trying to make it big was enough to spark my interest... But that kind of thing only brings people to the theatres once, and unless they want to be a one hit wonder, this studio is going to have to grow big time to make it in the long run.

I hope they make it. (:

~Sarah

Was the trailer that was shown in theaters the final render? For their (the studio and the backers) sake, I hope not.

And why was it so damn dark?

"...It is a foolish mistake to even try to second-guess the public. Make things for yourself and if by chance someone agrees with you, it's coincidental."

--Julian Schnabel

My first impression of the movie was yuck, but from the clips they keep show has me thinking that it might be worth going to see. The running turtle joke was excellent, in my opinion, and that was the one thing that has sold me on going to the movie. I only hope that the clips shown are not the only clips worth seeing. That "Valiant" movie with the pigeons was a very low quality movie, in my opinion.

Is that the same movie that was announced as Happily Ever After a few years back?

The clue is that a frog guy is giving out a namecard with these words in the end of the movie.

I might be wrong though...

Part of the reason why it's not likely I'm going to see Chicken Little before its DVD release, either, is that, judging from the trailers again, the dubbed version will suck. Example? Chicken Little's official German title is Himmel und Huhn which literally translates to Sky and Chicken. Regardless of their overall quality, today's pun-and-innuendo-filled animated features suffer from their getting translated and dubbed into German. And sadly, theatres showing original language versions of what is commonly regarded as "pure children's entertainment" are pretty rare hereabouts.

So you are saying that no one is putting the effort into translating movies so they would make sence to the German audience. I have heard that other movies exported to other country suffer greatly when traslated and dubbed. I have only seen a few foreign flicks that made sence too me. It makes me wonder how J. K. Rowlings pulls it off with all of her books being translated into so many different languages.

Your are correct, I hope you get to see this movie this year. I do not know how the foreign movie release thing works. This movie might be out on DVD by summer.

One more thing, if you have any work please post a link. If you are a student, I would like to see what your art work style is.

i hope Mr.Edwards can find the time to pop by here..

Oh, they do make sense. In Germany, we've had dubbed movies for as long as I can think. German audiences in general prefer their movies dubbed. Unlike their Dutch neighbours, they seem to have an aversion towards reading subtitles. Being interested in languages and animation, however, I like seeing English-language versions a lot better for lip synch and content reasons.
While it's not always directly apparent what is "lost in translation" when watching just the German version of a movie, seeing it in its original tongue afterwards, at least to me, very often reveals shortcomings.
Another problem is that while there are talented voice-over artists in Germany, they tend to get used over and over. Some actors even have the same voice-over artist, meaning it's quite possible two big time Hollywood stars sound exactly alike in German. (Arnold Schwarzenegger and John Travolta, for example.) Cartoon voices are even worse. That guy who voices Spongebob in Germany - it's a fitting voice but he dubs almost every diminutive, scrawny cartoon character there is, sounding almost always exactly the same.

Well it looks like we all agree about the trailer and if the rest of you go and see the movie, I am sure that we will all be saying the same thing about the show as a whole. So one should be watching these guys who make the trailers, they are giving away far too much.

You need to go just to check out the trailers for upcoming animation features. There were four of them and two were awful while the other two look passable.

Ice Age 2 is going to be about as good as the first one. The dark horse is the one about the hunted house. That one could go either way, one big waste of time or an entertaining afternoon.

Oh, Shrek 3 in 2007. I read a short piece about the plot line for the movie.

What were the other two trailers Wontobe? Yeah, the look of "Monster House" looks nice, but then it gets alittle creepy when the stylized characters start to move with mo-cap.

I believe there are two studios in LA that do all the trailers for the movies. I wouldn't mind working there, cutting movie trailers together all day. Sounds cool. Depends how my week end goes, I might go and see "Hoodwinked."

Hoodwinked director responds

I am REALLY tired of reading posts from people out there who are determined to cut down a movie they haven't even seen ...

I am surprised that a group of American animators are so opposed to “Hoodwinked.” I would think the animation community would be delighted by it! This is a TINY animated movie that was made by small-time animation guys that turned into a phenomenon on the big screen. Isn’t that the big dream for all of us? My hope is that you would take heart and be inspired that this film even happened, instead of doomsaying it.

And to all the snobs out there, guess what: I KNOW the animation could be better! The film was made with the skill levels we had at the studio we could afford. Give me a break. I fail to understand why some of you rally around a fat cat studio project like "Shrek" and turn your noses up at the little guys trying to take them on.

You known the funniest thing about valiant isn't the story itself, but th efact that when I was working in the uk they were looking for animators with 10 years (minimum) experience in maya... :D and being very dispondant about people with less experience applying for the jobs?

"check it out, you know it makes sense!" http://miaumau.blogspot.com/

Thanks for all the replies!!!

Thanks for all the replies...

Made in the Pacific rim....bad animation but a good story and #1 at the box office this weekend...hum...

Sounds like a trend...like the "RUGRATS MOVIE" but only in CG!!!!!

Humm......there you go....

Has anyone here actually seen the movie?

What were the other two trailers Wontobe? Yeah, the look of "Monster House" looks nice, but then it gets alittle creepy when the stylized characters start to move with mo-cap.

Sorry but I am having a hard time remembering them. It is late so they might come back to me tomorrow.

Not yet. My initial reaction was to stay away, but the trailers and early reviews have me rethinking that decision. Maybe for a matinee...

Maya hasn't even been around for 10 years has it? Thats too funny.

It really seems like a funny movie, and I might see it as a matinee if I'm bored one weekend, but it's the quality of the animation that is really putting me off. Pluss I also have a bad feeling that the funny parts in the trailer are all the funny parts in the movie. Oh well, we'll see how it does this weekend. I have friends that will probably go because they have kids, so I'll get the scoop from them.

These all have trailers out.

Barnyard

So far there are 17 animated movies slated for release this year. Hoodwinked was released last year (limited).

Oh my freakin' - I just saw some of the trailers' animation and it seems "probably going to see it" is saying too much already. I think it looks horrible! I pass, I pass, I pass!
Karate fighting fairy-tale creatures, pop culture references 'til ya choke and overpaid celebs doing voices - welcome to a new kind of formula. Ugh!

Well those who are not snobs are most likely wonting jobs with that fat cats. I have seen "Hoodwinked" twice and it stood up well. If Edwards ever comes to this forum, I hope that he will notice that this thread has been taking issue with the movie trailer and not the movie.
