2d animation on chicken little.

well i caught a bit of the making of chicken little this morning. was 8am and i was sleepy but when i saw them drawing keys on the screen for the animators to follow, that pretty much woke me up.
the gentleman on the screen said since Disney has its heritage in hand drawn animation a lot of the crew can do it and they use that as a guideline for a lot of the animation. then he went into bits of stretch, squash, follow through etc. but it was quite interesting. i didnt think they would be doing this.

anyone else seen this? or know of it?

Hardware : The screens they were using were quite nifty. kinda like tablet PC's but much much bigger and they were doin the 2d bits directly on it as well as using them as monitors. Quite sweet, unlike the cintiqs these arent secondary.

Probably one of the guy you saw was my Animation Mentor mentor Jason Ryan. He was the Lead for the Chicken Little character. That's him drawing on the clip I posted. And He's drawing on a standard Cintiq. How he typically works is he roughly draws out his golden poses, keys and breakdowns. He does this so he can see if the poses and timing works. He said he'll show this to the director to get it signed off on, befor he even touches the 3D rig. That way he doesn't waste time fiddling with the model to get it all perfect and then not have it approved. Its a great system of working.

Yep. That's exactly how they did it. They drew out their key poses first on a tablet and used them for reference.
James

i think its the coolest thing ever. I guess Noob! was correct. maybe i judt didnt see it right. i always thought cintiqs were attached separately....

anyway cool little thing that. i wonder if Pixar people do anything like this.

didn't brad bird make sure he took in classicaly trained 2d animators first and then put them on a 3d program at pixar for the incredibles?

i wouldn't be suprised if they do the same thing there aswell.

id like to know how many 3d animators at pixar, dreamworks, disney HAVENT had 2d animation training.

Yes, Brad Bird brought in the animation team from "The Iron Giant".
The animators on Chicken Little were former traditional animators from Disney.

I doubt any. I belive most of Pixar's animators come from a 2D background.
Same with the animators on the newest Dreamworks films: Madagascar,
Shrek 2, Shark Tale, and the newest Over the Hedge. A lot of those animators were taken from Dreamwork's 2D animation department when it closed down.

James

you are really hurting yourself if you do not learn or mess around with classic 2d.

i dont think any school does straight 3d anyway, especially not years ago when those animators at those places went to such schools.

the sad thing is, there is a bunch of people here in india who have gone straight into 3d.

im not sure if they are all animators or they serve other functions but maybe this is the reason why some of the stuff i see is so scary

CHEATERS! haha. kidding. thats pretty interesting though. its like the opposite of rotoscoping.

It is an easy way to do 3d....or at least get some 2d animation into 3d. But i dont think they can get the full 3d life into something by just relying on this technique. I havnt seen the movie yet though, so i cant really base the animation particularly.

So in the "making of" thing did they just do the keyposes? or like...did they copy it frame by frame?

It's not an unusual thing to do. They created hand-drawn key poses for CG elements in Disney movies before, like the tiger head cave entrance in Aladdin and the hydra in Hercules.
One of my animation teachers currently works on a German CG/live action project but rarely touches a PC. What he mainly does is draw storyboards and ruff key sketches for the CG guys.

they probably where using wacom cintiqs to draw on,damn them!!!

i dont think they were cintiqs Noob! they looked like some evil custom designed thing.

Blink -

i think they just did key poses. it was too early in the morning so i cant be sure of what was going on but he said something about using their heritage and most of the guys being 2d animators etc etc, that they used keyframes and then placed characters and do the in between poses or movements on 3d directly.

i thought it was quite nifty, dont consider it cheating. why ?

crazy cutomised cintiq.super cintiqs.

....
yeh for sum wierd reason most 3d guys consider doin it in 2d first before 3d is cheating, don't ask me why lol

super cintiqs.

:p

if anyone has custom stuff its prolly Disney and Pixar boys.
