What movies should Hollywood remake?

Peter Jackson finally remade that King Kong movie he always wanted to make. It reminds me about when a couple years back when everyone was complaining about how bad that Godzilla movie was, I came up with a fantasy list of movies that Hollywood SHOULD make since their not gonna come up with anything original anyway. Happily, a lot of the movies on my list were made, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe and so on. So I figured that if I made a new list and prayed really hard, they might find their way of being made too. Here’s a few of my fanboy picks for you to agree with, debate on, and hopefully add some. I didn’t check ComingSoon.net so… if its being made, sue me.

Justice League – I’m a bad person. A few months before Christopher Reeve was in his tragic accident, there was fanboy talk about a “World’s Finest” movie, and which “Batman” should be in it. I was so upset when it didn’t happen. Now that there is a new “Superman”, maybe… just maybe… Not that we need another comic book movie though… A new Wonder Woman would be cool! Oh, speaking of comic book movies that we don’t need…

Teen Titans or Young Justice – Now I know what you’re thinking, but I’m not a Teen Titans fan trying to keep it on the air. I think that it’s a movie worthy concept though. Sky High got it wrong though. A teenage superhero movie would rock, just use the REAL Young Justice characters and get Tim Burton or Bryan Singer to direct and you’ve got a winner. Eh, I’ll keep with the comic book theme and I’ll nominate….

Bone – How awesome would a Bone movie be? I’m hoping for a live action / 2D animated mix. Roger Rabbit fans are long overdue for a GOOD live action 2D mix I think. This one’s been on my list since Godzilla by the way.

I’ve got more, but hey, throw an idea out there whether its animated or comic book or not or whatever.

How about

Flash Gordon
Gigantor

oops theres my ride ...

How about, instead of remaking movies that were successful the first time around, they take a stab at remaking the cr@ppy ones and fixing the problems that studio executives and their bean-counting, monkey-in-a-business-suit interference in the creative process created the first time around?

Or is that over the top? :D

I wouldn't mind seeing James Camron remake all six Star Wars movies. Or maybe Joss Weaton.

they should remake the Phantom Menace...oh! and the Clone Wars!

In all honesty i dont think films should ever be re-made unless they get to the point that they look so out of date that they become almost unwatchable and cant be taken seriously. King Kong for instance, even though it does show off some of the best stop motion animation for that time, it does look rather bad now. But i wouldnt want to see any films like star wars or films like that to be remade for at least another 60-70 years.

im just saying....THAT THEY BOTH SUCKED AS BAD AS THE TEEN TITANS! it was a joke, that King Kong movie looks appealing though.OH!OH! I got another good remake, get this...The Phantom Menace!Oh and the Clone Wars!
How bout now?

Star Wars and its prequals was what they were, and i think people need to understand and get over that.

its not like the originals were film making briliance or anything.

As for remakes...i dont know. I did enjoy the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Seeing it done so differently was interesting.

It would be cool to see some remakes done from a different characters perspective. I cant think of one that would be a good candidate at the moment though.

I cannot honestly think of a movie i have seen i would like to see again in a different form.

Thats my point Star Wars episodes 1-4 are just that. Unwatchable. George should just stick with merchandizing and leave the film making to film makers.

Fritz the Cat comes close to being good, but it has some major flaws. All the Crumb stuff is pure gold, unfortunately many of Bakshi's additions don't really fit in. The trouble with Fritz is, you couldn't really remake it. It's too tied in to the sixties. If they tried to modernise it, they'd remove it even further from the essence of what it's all about. If they tried to do a period piece set in the sixties, it'd probably come out all clíchéd and phony. It's a pity Crumb has taken the attitude he has to not dealling with the film industry. He has some stories with really wild cinematic potential.

I agree that the best films to remake are the ones that didn't live up to their potential in the first place.

Godzilla(1998) is a good example of a how to take a very cool concept for a film, and wind up a bad episode of 'Friends'. What's even more amazing is how many times the Japanese can make this film without even coming close to fully exploiting the enormous potential.

Van Helsing wasn't a particularly good idea for a film, but when I watched it I couldn't help thinking that they could have made a much much better film, if they had made it on a fraction of the budget but with a better cast.

Battlefield Earth is another one. I dunno if there could ever be a good movie under there, it is a film that could be improved on in almost every way.

And lastly, I think they will probably have to remake the Transformers movie after Michael Bay is done with it.

Why remake a story to which the outcome and story points are already known? What's the point in that? To placate the idiots to lazy or timid to view the originals?

Nah, dispense with the redundancy of remakes altogther and give us visions and tales we've not yet witnessed.

Not granted, after saying all that, I am stoked to see the Jackson version of King Kong, a indelible remake if there ever was one. The story is well known, but I'd like to see this revisioning. I'm "flexible" enough in my stance to allow for a remake or two where a truly new vision can be lent to the tale.

Otherwise..........nah.

They should remake Aeon Flux...it was awful.

They could do a decent remake of Forbidden Planet (think what could be done with Robbie and the Id Monster!). Maybe really play up the whole strange Morbius-Altaira-Adams love triangle, give the writers something to work with...

...or, maybe The Day The Earth Stood Still? On second thought, best not to mess with perfection.

A "re-imagining" of the Flash Gordon serials, then. That'd be rich.

Forbidden Planet has been in and out of development for the past five years.

Flash Gordon is supposed to be out next year; by the guy who did those mummy movies.

Why not just rerelease the originals worth rereleasing in the theaters? Why was "Oceans 11" remade? Why was "Sabrina" remade? Or "Shall We Dance?" or "Abre los ojos" ("Vanilla Sky") or worse, "Psycho"?!? They didn't need to be. There's tons of great old movies that are still a blast to watch, but they've been buried in DVD bins. Some of the best movie experiences I've had were seeing "Vertigo" and "Casablanca" on the big screen. Remakes are basically a way to cut down on risk. It's part of an ideology that looks at making movies purely from a business standpoint. That's why George Lucas can still make movies today but the Marx Brothers lost their major contract after "Duck Soup" (Lucas can apparently sell anything with the name "Star Wars" attached to it no matter how lame so he's allowed to continue; and "Duck Soup", though a classic, bombed in the theaters so they lost their first major contract - they did get another one, though).

I think Hollywood could revive itself by moving away from remakes. But now they have to compete with the gaming industry, which is apparently starting to overtake the movies every year. Which is probably why we're seeing more video games on the "DELUXE" DVD releases of new movies.

[...] after saying all that, I am stoked to see the Jackson version of King Kong

Remakes are basically a way to cut down on risk.

Peter Jackson says he remade King Kong because he wanted to bring one of his favorite stories to a new generation, because kids and families usually won't sit through old B&W movies.

I have no problem with remakes as long as it's a good movie.

Ocean's 11
King Kong
Manchurian Candidate
Jackson's Lord of the RIngs series
Dawn of the Dead
The Thomas Crown Affair
Scarface
The Blob
The Fly
Cape Fear
The Thing
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Insomnia
12 Monkeys
Cat People
The Ring
The Italian Job
War of the Worlds (eh, not as good as the original, but okay)
assorted A Christmas Carol adaptations
A Fistful of Dollars
The Magnificent Seven
Never Say Never Again
True Lies
Ben-Hur
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Freaky Friday
Henry V
The Mummy (entertaining, not great)
Pride and Prejudice (supposedly ok. haven't seen it yet)
The 39 Steps
The Ten Commandments
Evil Dead 2
Titanic (sappy, but otherwise good)
Solaris (not terrible)

Several of the movies above are better than the originals.

Many consider a remake to be a movie which chiefly uses another movie as its source material, rather than a re-interpretation of a book. By that standard, some of these (Henry V) aren't necessarily remakes, while others (Dawn of the Dead) are.

I have not been reading this thread but...

The title should read "When will hollywood remake a movie".
