Just for fun - favorite bad movie

Hey gang,

I caught the end of my favorite bad movie tonight, and it got me thinking: What movies do you love that are generally regarded as "bad".

I'm talking movies like Ishtar, Cutthroat Island, Perfect, Heaven's Gate - pretty much reviled by every living being on Earth, except you.

My favorite "bad" movie: Hudson Hawk. You gotta love a movie that mixed DaVinci, the Vatican, the quest for the perfect cappucino, and 40's popular music. It's a can't miss formula. :D

So let's have 'em - the best of the worst...

"Howard The Duck" and now I will never talk about this again.

Woa, this is a really old thread, why did you raise it from the dead, Harvey?

Anyway, don't ask me why, but I saw a smaller film called Christmas in Wonderland starring Patrick Swayze recently...that was one of the worst films I have ever seen. With some hilariously bad CG elves.

The Yellow Submarine was the worst animated film I have ever seen in my entire life. Chicken Little comes in at a close second.

I don't really find much amusement out of bad films. I just hate them.

--Z

Wow, sorry I missed this thread.

Bad movies.... that we like? Hmmm.... I know a lot of bad movies that I DON'T like...

How about some animated ones? I laughed at Quest for Camelot. That stinker had sequences that weren't inbetweened.

I'll add my two cents to the "bad that we like" list:

ANY Troma film,
Killer Clowns from Outer Space
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (its so bad... but I can't look away! funny puppets....)
Corvette Summer
ANY Kevin Smith movie (except the Clerks animated series, those were pretty good)
Rocky Horror Picture Show (dammit, Janet!)
Catwoman (only because Halle Berry was in it)
ANYTHING that had Tom Green in it
The Joel Shumacher Batman movies (this is more of a "love to hate" thing - he's still working??!!)
ANY MOVIE with "National Lampoon's" in the beginning of the title
and Showgirls (the ridiculous TBS version).

What?! You don't like the original Star Wars Trilogy? Sure, the narrative isn't brilliant, but they're all fun movies.

I'm just saying Star Wars, not the whole trilogy.

Aloha,
the Ape

...we must all face a choice, between what is right... and what is easy."

While A New Hope is dated, it's still the best-- and most watchable-- of the series. It's amazingly well-paced for the era, and blends Flash Gordon thrills with Eastern mysticism in a much subtler way than any of the later movies.

While I was already pretty much of a movie geek by that time, no experience I've ever had watching a movie compares to the first time I saw Star Wars in a theater-- about a month after its release. And I'll take Alec Guinness over a foam rubber puppet any day!

In general, I like a lot of old "bad" movies better than new "good" ones. The original Flash Gordon "Space Soldiers" serial, Mexican horrors like Brainiac, 50s schlock like Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and Brain From Planet Aurus, Russ Meyer flicks like Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, B noirs like DOA and Detour, Ed Wood classics like Plan 9 and Glen Or Glenda? naturally... I look at old B-movies the way a lot of animators look at silent comedies. They're like a bottomless pit of inspiration!

worth a bump (or 5)

Hey gang,

A good bad movie is an oxy, moron. (sorry, couldn't resist)

I have a higher tolerance of generally-considered bad movies when it comes to sci-fi and horror. As long as that type of movie is ripe with spectacle, I'm happy.
Some movies of those genres that I'm embarrassed to say I own copies of are
Godzilla (1998), The Hulk, Event Horizon,
and House on Haunted Hill (1999).

And I love MST3K, because they took garbage and made it great by ridiculing it. Laughing at stupid things has always been entertaining.

"Big Trouble, In Little China" Cracks me up.-

Oh, easy - Dungeons & Dragons: The Movie. Cracks me up so badly, and in a bad way, that makes it good again.

battlefield earth. nuff said

If you haven't seen "Clambake" then you haven't seen a bad movie.

Ice Pirates - a bonafide classic - utter rubbish

The Brothers McLeod
brothersmcleod.co.uk

"Tank Girl"
(The animated bits were nice, though. Pity they didn't animate the whole thing)

"U-Turn"
(It had a decent enough film-noir premise, but Stone turned it into a freakshow. Still, Billy-Bob Thornton makes me chuckle)

"The Agony and the Ectasy"
(Chuck Heston in Moses mode v. Rex 'Do you dicker with your Pontiff?' Harrison. Oh, yeah)

"Showgirls"
(For obvious reasons. I have a Y-chromosome. Sue me)

...and any "Dolemite" movie ;)

Ehem...

Logans Run, Westworld (or even spaceworld), and Altered States.

All good in my opinion...

Oh yea... and any movie that stars Dean Caine, as well as any movie directed by David Decoteau. These are always good for a laugh.

Logans Run, Westworld (or even spaceworld), and Altered States.

I don't know why you'd classify those as bad movies. Those are all classics.

see the thing is any movie with a real low budget, slasher type or somethign with Dean Cain in it is supposed to be bad. so thats not really on.

a bad movie that was made with a huge budget with A list stars and a good caste that turned out to be real bad.

thats where its at

There have been old B movies that were so bad they were good whose names escape me (except the Ed Wood ones).
There was one about a mad scientist (May've been Legousi) who is doing a brain transferral to a Gorilla but for some reason needs a Mexican Lady wrestler's brain.
There was another from the 50s about some teenage alien and some monster that was just a lobster enlarged.

But my favorite bad movie is a recent one made bad deliberately as an homge to those old B movies, which is tough to pull-off; The Lost Skeleton Of Cadavra.
It's hilarious!

the ultimate good bad movie has to be 'The Toxic Advenger' that kid before he falls into the toxic waste is the funniest thing ever put on film!

DING!DING!DING!
"Tell him what he's won, Johnny!"

Thanks. I'm sure the second one's it. Doesn't the Brooklyn Gorilla have that Martin and Lewis knock-off? Haven't seen that one.

I never quite understood what was so bad about the 1970s Kong remake. I can see the flaws there with the monkey suit effects and all, some dodgy dialogue, and some of the way it's played out could have worked a little better. But I think there's a lot of stuff there that works as well, it has a great score, and some of the effects are still impressive. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have the dinosaurs, though I think it makes sense to leave them out. This movie gets bashed by fans of the original to an extent that I always thought was undeserved. Even Peter Jackson has been bashing it ever since he announced his Kong remake.

Other than that, there's quite a lot of bad movies I've enjoyed. I liked The Black Cauldron, it's definitely no classic, but I think it's reputation is largely unjustified. Didn't like Atlantis, I think it's got huge problems, though it has grown on me a bit since. Same goes for Dreamworks' Road to El Dorado, and to a lesser extent Sinbad. These have ingredients I like, though on the whole they just don't cut it as films.

Battlefield Earth, when I heard about how bad it was, I just had to see it. I sort of hoped it would be like a modern Planet of the Apes, but for lots of reasons it wasn't. Ghosts of Mars looked crap to me when I saw the trailers and advertising, but I saw it anyway since it was John Carpenter. It is pretty bad, but I kind of got into it.

I've seen all those Ed Wood films and many fifties B-movies, and it's kind of hard to get exited about them, since many of them already have cult followings, so they have a reputation that preceeds them, that they don't always live up to. Last one I enjoyed was Night of the Ghouls.

You youngsters have probably never seen this film, and now I even hear some critics praising it, but it's laughable, but very watchable:

Touch of Evil

It had Orson Wells as a fat evil (bubba) bad doer with a putty nose, good old Charlston Heston in Mexican face paint and phony accent and Marlena Dietrich playing an aging whore. What more could you ask for in a bad movie.

I did a poll a few weeks ago with friends who are all into filmbusiness about their favorite examples of bad films which were a commercial success. The Top examples were:

"Pearl Harbour"
Remake of "Rollerball"
"Battlefield Earth"
"John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars"
"Anaconda"
"Mortal Combat"
"Honey"
"Armageddon"

and almost everyone mentioned "Titanic", what I can't understand, because it might be a kitchy film, but it is nevertheless a great film with a great story.

By the way, my favorite is Jeepers Creepers!

.

.

"Howard the Duck" was on my list, but has fallen off. All my others have been spoken for by all of you guys. It is great to be in with such good company, "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and "Elvira - Mistress of the Dark" save me from many of a dull night.

Funny Phacker. Us yougsters don't watch nuthin' less it's got color or CG.... :) My wife loves Touch of Evil. I'm still impressed by the huge opening shot.

"Resident Evil"... good call. Some pretty decent 'homage' moments to the original Night of the Living Dead movies.

I've heard that Bad Boys (I not II) was actually watchable (and enjoyable if you like other Bruckheimer fare).

The original 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' is laughable now, but still one of my favorite paranoid/red scare/censorship '50's movies.

UHF is still a favorite, although not quite as funny as when I was in high school...

one of the best terrible movies i've seen.

Seed of Chucky. and that kinda makes it one of the best. because it doesn't try to be anything other than a cheesey movie. Guess they finally realized a killer doll makes a better horror spoof than an actualy horror flick.

im just going to say that Welles did more in that opening shot then what a lot of people will ever do in their entire career. that is some piece of work. the film was kind of laughable especially Heston and his mexican accent but tht opening bit is breathtakingly well done.
which is why i love what Welles once said " i started on the top and worked my way to the bottom"

Orson was a ham, and he was at his hammiest in Touch of Evil. But I love the atmosphere of it. His death scene is a classic in a the sense that he really over did it. How many other actors could have gotten away with that without some editor cutting at least a little of that scene.

maybe. but he didnt start out as a ham. Kane & Ambersons were not hammy at all. To some extent neither was Macbeth.
also i think the definitions of performances have changed as times have (post Brando)

We shouldn't even be discussing Touch of Evil since it's not a bad movie. Heston just about ruined it, but still it's not a bad movie.
Let's get back to the crap. :D

aite.

how bad was Snakeyes? despite the opening shot :)
$70million budget, Nicholas Cage, Gary Sinise, Carla Gugino
good clean cast, big budget and name director Brian De Palma

wat a piece of crap....

I usually like De Palma, but Snake Eyes was such a forgettable movie.

De Palma's great at creating fun garbage, though:
The Untouchables, Mission:Impossible, Raising Cain, The Fury, Carrie.

but he lost his way a while ago.
oh hell while we are on bad films and De Palma how about the $35million orgy of crapness Femme Fatale. even a naked and debauched Rebbeca Romijin couldnt save tht stinker.

maybe. but he didnt start out as a ham. Kane & Ambersons were not hammy at all. To some extent neither was Macbeth.

If you are objective and listened to Orson on various talk shows like I had the opportunity to do, Kane and the Ambersons were both pieces of pretencious junk that the critics and public both bought into because they were afraid to tell the emperor (Welles) that he wore no clothes. Sure he added to the artistic mix with his camera angles and stuff, but get real he was manipulating current attitudes and cycles. 3rd man is another piece of pretencious crap if you look at it with a critical, objective view point.

And Macbeth, give me a break. You couldn't even understand the dialogue. Bells Chime at Midnight was probably one of his better characterizations if you are a Welles fan.

Pat Hacker, Visit Scooter's World.

If you like spicy junk food, then you might consider Showtime's Masters of Horror series.
Each episode is a short movie, directed my horror film legends like Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep), Stuart Gordon (Re-animator), Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist), Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling), John Landis (American Werewolf in London), John Carpenter (The Thing, Halloween), WIlliam Malone (House on Haunted Hill), Larry Cohen (It's Alive), and John McNaughton (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer).

"Phantom of the Paradise": fun garbage :)

"Bonfire of the Vanities": not fun garbage :(

...and "Zardoz" is in a klass by itself- some of Sean Connery's worst work...right down there with "The Avengers."

Yeah, apparently I can't read.

I wouldn't call Army of Darkness a bad movie. It's silly, but it's supposed to be silly.

I'm with ya, Harvey. I don't think AoD qualifies; it never set out to be an A-list film. It is one of my favorite movies though...
