is traditional 2d dying?

Personally, I think 2D will be around forever, but what do you think - Is it going to slowly fade out? will it just stay the way it is now? or is there a comeback forseeable?

 oh knows, another one of these threads!! prepare to get flamed by other members!!!

lol

if by dying u mean, not being produced as much as it was, then yeh...in the u.s. mostly *talking bout feature films here*

still seems pretty much the same as it ever was in europe though,2d animation as a whole i mean.

Digital 2d animation is becoming more popular than drawing with pencil and paper, mainly cos its a time and cost saver.

but theres still something about traditional u just can't get with drawing straight into the computer.

It Will NEVER die,as its better than 3D computer stuff!!!!!!!

He He He.

most of the people here loves 2d.
so.. for 'is it going to slowly fade out?', you'll get a lot of 'no'.
and personally, no, i don't think so.
2d will last, just like bach, sinatra, and the beatles.

This topic should be a sticky, along with the Wacom topic.

2D might be diminishing in the theaters (four 2D films this year compared to seven 2D films ten years ago), but I believe there have been more 2D features made recently than ever before. It's just that most of them are going direct-to-video.

And there are more 2D shows on TV now than ever before, so I think it's a little early to declare 2D dead.

 im really tired of topics like these.

I doubt it will ever die as long as animators still have a love for it. Who knows, someone may make a 2D movie that does so well that Disney and Dreamworks come to their senses and relize people still like it!

Wow... Forget 2D animation. Will these redundant threads ever die out?!?!?! If I had a nickel for every time I have seen a thread like this... I would not need animation to make a living! No offence to the person who started this thread, but HOLY DAFT-NESS! That is like asking "Do you think that oil painting will die out now that we have the computer and programs like "Painter"? There is something special that you cannot achieve with a computer, and so that is why 2D is done. Likewise for 3D... There is something special about it as well, and that is why IT is done. One will NEVER take the place of the other.

For all you people who have been DYING to know... 2D WILL NEVER DIE OUT, NOR WILL 3D! THEY ARE SIMPLY 2 DIFFERENT MEDIUMS, AND BOTH LOVED EN MASSE! PLEASE STOP ASKING THIS QUESTION!

Thanks

If 2D is dead, doesn't that make us all necrophiliacs? :o

Heh.. most probably the guy who'll be asking The Question next week won't read that tho.. Perhaps the mod could help by sticking up some 'Read Before You Post' thing, you know.. maybe it'll help a bit.

i dont mind a beaten to death topic. i would just like to hear some kind of new speculation or a new take atleast. maybe some proper factoids popped in. just blanket statements are oh so last week.

It's going to be a bit unfashionable for a while, then in a few years, there will be a groundbreaking 2d movie and everyone will want to jump on again.

A few years ago, in music production, everyone decided to go digital. Analogue gear was being chucked out in bins. Now everyone is raving about the 'special quality' of analogue. Tape is better than HD. Analogue synths are better than digital etc.

Well that's what a noob like me was going to say, until I realised this was the exact equivalent of the HW/SW analogue/digital thread that comes up every week on the music forum I frequent. But I thought I'd just post it anyway....

don't forget the US tends to think technology is what makes a film good. isn't it Toy Story that pretty much kicked off the 3D craze?

Toy Story would have been just as good 2D, because Pixar knows how to make a good movie. 3D just happens to be their medium of choice.

but the people pulling the strings don't seem to have any shred of common or creative sense.

you know....when i think about it...i dont think toy story would be as appealing. The 3d was kinda the biggest thing that set it apart. Made it new and great. It set a nice style. If toy story was done in 2d then it would not have captured the essence as well.

It is supposed to be capturing REAL toys coming to life. I think in 2d it would have been a completely different movie. I really cannot imagine it as 2d in any way shape or form.

"who wouldn't want to make stuff for me? I'm awesome." -Bloo

maybe toy story but there are a bunch of 3d movies Madagascar especially that would have been just as entertaining in any form.
besides why not move forward to photo realism and mocap movies. tht should be the next frontier.

I was just going to say, "Is it Thursday already?"

There's a lot of opinions on this one in the forum. Do a search on 2D and you'll find more opinions than you can shake a stick at. Actually, you probably won't even need to search, just scroll to the bottom of the page or click the next button, you'll probably find last weeks discussion on it.
