I have a question about writing.

I finished my screenplay. It was written in Microsoft Word. I followed the margins and tabs required for a screenplay.

Then, I emailed it to myself so I could download it and print it at my mom's house. She has a laser printer.

So, I do a print preview, and it's all messed up. I had to drop the margins to practically zero to get one page of writing to fit onto one page. When I print it out, the type goes all the way to the top and bottom, and both sides. It's almost like it's "zoomed" or something.

Obviously, I can't hand it to someone in the business looking like this. And I don't want to have to go through the whole thing, resetting margins and page breaks so that it comes out right on her printer.

One of them is wrong. Anyone come across something like this before, and do you have a solution?

I considered putting it on a jump drive and taking it to Staples or Kinko's, but I don't want to pay for 100 pages of printing and find out the margins were still messed up.

Any advice?

Cute PDF

There's a utility called CutePDF available free from download.com. Basically, it installs a new "printer" that is accessible via the print menu. But instead of printing it asks you a file name and creates a PDF file. Very simple and free PDF creator. And you can use it with any program that can access the printer.

You may need an additional driver to get it to work, but with a little poking around and reading the files that come with it, it's not too bad to install.

This will "bake in" the margins and other formating that may not transfer properly from computer to computer (especially if you're going between OS's) If it still prints incorrectly then you're original document's margin's are incorrect. If it prints correctly, then it was a problem with transferring between computers.

I use this for sending Resumes, too. It keeps the formatting without showing it to the end user (or relying on them having the right setup). It's a cross platform document file, with a free viewer. And pdf's aren't likely to carry viruses like Word files, so it's a little safer to send around to people.

Also, double check your settings and document properties to be sure your document is using the same paper as your printer.

You can tell how excited I am. I wonder what my pitch is going to be about?

Me too. Thanks for the encouragement. I needed it. I'll be sure to let the board know when it's finished (probably closer to Halloween). I'm teetering on burn out at the moment as the job I'm on goes into it's "death throes" of overtime. But I'll get my second wind soon.

And good luck, Space Ghost. We can all say we knew you when! :)
