Back from Annecy

Hello,

My wife and I had a great time at Annecy this year.

For me, Annecy is the best (sorry PIMP) Animation Festival in the world. It was my third time there and it did not disappoint.

This year, we booked our registration and tickets online- it was easy and fast and ...hyper.... As I was booking on a Friday night- events and screening would begin to disappear so I had to rush through and reserve tickets for my wife and then bounce back into my reservations to make sure they all jived. In the end, it worked out great...only a few tense moments. But...it beat having to stand in line!

Annecy is this great little city nestled in the French Alps. The main animation venue is right on the Lac (Lac Annecy).

We flew into Frankfurt and trained down to Geneva and then took a bus the final 25 miles into Annecy. We arrived a day early and settled into our hotel.
On Sunday morning, we found a small cafe for our breakfast. It was a great place lots of people to draw and a really intimate atomsphere.

I drew and painted every moment I could...I did so much artwork I had to send the sketchbooks back vis post...so I am now waiting like an expectant father for them to arrive.

One look around the venue and you knew you were at THE place for animation- folks from all over the animation terrain were in attendance.

The atmosphere at Annecy is always electric!

Before every screening a festival bumper was shown- these changed daily and were produced on the Goblins school. Most of them were wonderful and funny and very entertaining.

Also before every screening, another Annecy tradition insued - hundreds of paper airplanes would rain down toward the stage in an effort to reach the screen...even the judges participated in this activity.

As I mentioned in reply to the Bill Pympton response article (featured on AWN this month), we did attend the first Annecy Plus. The evening was fun and full of artistic energy. At first, I thought the same as others - "Who were these renegades?" But once I had a chance to speak to some of the organizers- it was all a "What the hey..." We had a great time...and even secured a seat close to the screen.

Also during the Festival, I met with some of the folks from Germany working on segments of my film project. It was wonnderful to see their progress.

Finally, I also met up with Kent Braun from Digicel Inc. of Flipbook fame- our first ever face to face after scores of phone calls.

My congratulations to the folks at Annecy for the Festival...it was awesome!

By the thanks to Dan Sarto for the dinner...Dan's tops.
Thanks.:)

Hey, welcome back Larry! Sounds like you had a great time. I'm so jealouse, I've always wanted to go to one of those international animaton festivals. Maybe next year I'll be able to go.

September- OTTAWA

Hello Ape!

You might want to check out OTTAWA in September.

That's the ANIMATION PIMP'S territory- Chris is the programmer for Ottawa and his wife is also involved.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend- I'll be in France teaching for SCAD at Lacoste- (tough gig :) )

I will put up some pictures of Annecy soon....

Thanks.

Nope, can't make Ottawa either. I'm going to be in Germany for the next two months. Maybe I can time it better next year to be over there while Annecy is going on. That way I can check that out, and maybe even catch a stage of the Tour de France. Go Lance! :D

I look forward to seeing the pics Larry.
