Animation be in 24FPS,25FPS or 30FPS?

Hey Guys,
Whats up? Well i have a question; I was reading a book named 'How to Produce 2D Animation'. Let me tell you, im a Junior Animator & Compositor.

While reading the book, they have said that, when you animate, you should animate at 24FPS. But in industry, people are doing at 25 FPS. I am confused as i dont know which is right. I am talking about general Frame Rate. Which is the best option to do so. In india, Ppl do animate @ 25 FPS. In Other country, they do at 24/30 FPS. So i am confused, which is the best option.
Bye :)

I think the standard in America is 12-24 fps. Maybe a 30 fps output for TV... In Japan it's 6-8 fps for limited TV animation and fully animated 12-24 fps for feature films.

Spoooze!

You really should always animate with 24fps in mind... 24 is not only used because it relates to the fps of film but it is also a lot easier to work with. I assume that you know about ones, twos and fours... you really cant work that way when dealing with any other fps, it just becomes a big mess and timing becomes very difficult to judge. You would almost be forced to animate every single frame, and in a time and cost effectiveness standpoint, it becomes a nightmare.

Thank you all... The information was very interesting and useful. Basically i am planning out to start my own firm, So before starting i just want to confirm, which is the best frame rate, i should start.

I think i will start with 24FPS. As many ppl say, that its easy to animate and 2nd thing, it saves 1 or 6 frames. :)

it depends..

hi there!

it depends..
in italy, and I think also in each european country, we animate at 25 fps, cause our television system is 25fps frame rate.
when we do the exports infact, on the options we select 25fps, cause our tv system is like that.

in USA they use a 30fps tv system, so may be they do animation according to their framerate

the 24fps time code is for cinema (pellicola), so maybe when a company makes a feature they adopts 24fps (they animate in step 1, full animation).

I'm not sure about the way USA companies do animation, but I'm sure that in europe we use 25fps :)

so, if your tv system is 25fps, and you'r not going to make a feature, let's do animation in 25fps, and don't care about other framerates ;)

bye!

In 2D, the west animates at 24 fps (or 12 fps on 2's) and uses a 3:2 pulldown to get to the 30 fps (29.97, actually) required for video.

I'm curious - If europeans are animating at 25 fps, how does that affect shooting on 2's? You only have an even number every 2 seconds. How does that affect things like walks?

That's easy. They draw 12.5 drawings per second;)

sorry :D

ok 25fps it's just the output settings , we do 12 drawings for second.
...sorry!!! :P

LOL!

I do believe most studios animate at 24 fps. Not to say that some studios don't use different frame rates, I actually do freelance for a studio that animates at 30fps. 24fps is the most standard and the easiest to break down in halves, 24,12,6,etc. as apposed to 30, 15, 7.5, 3.75... The thing is, animate at what ever frame rate the studio you're working for wants.

...we must all face a choice, between what is right... and what is easy."

What I keep hearing is that US cartoons are animated at 24 FPS, BUT they are usually shot on twos. That means that only twelve pictures are drawn for each second, and each picture shot twice, so it is recorded onto two successive frames of film.

I do remember taking a tour of Hanna Barbera when I was a kid, and I got to meet Robert "Tiger" West, who was the Xerographer before Star Wirth. It was a LONG time ago, man, so bear with me. I don't know why I would think it was him, but someone showed us how the films were placed on the pegs, and they clicked the camera twice before switching cels.

Something else to know about shooting on twos is that it makes it very easy to smooth out an animation because you can just replace one of the duplicated cels with a "tween" cell. If someone makes a fast movement, shooting on twos make make it look like their arm jumped from one side of the screen to the other. Replacing the "dupe" cel with a "tween" will make the action smoother. Likewise, if there is a moment of "thinking" or non-action, you can shoot one cel as many times as you need to. Not calling anime a perfect example, but I know of scenes in animes where 6-8 seconds of filmtime were used up with only one drawing, one background, and panning. And, it was still effective. Plus, there's repetitive motions, reused animation, and other ways to save drawing time/money/wear on artists.

Note that most anime is shot "on threes" meaning only 8 drawings per second, unless action requires "tweens." I might do threes if I had to. I wouldn't do fours, unless I was doing a seperate oil painting or watercolor for each frame. I thinkt he animated cartoon "The Man Who Planted Trees" was probably done on fours, because the creator had fully drawn colored pencil drawings for each frame. Imagine doing six of those per second, for a twenty minute film, all by yourself.

Now I'm going to ask you an

Now I'm going to ask you an important and a little funny question. Because my head is so confused. The number of frames per second we call FPS. This place is okay. Do I need to take 24 pictures for every second to make my 24 fps video? I'm using the premiere pro. And each photo has a speed / duration setting. How do I set the "speed / duration" setting? Because, for example, if I say 5 seconds to take two photos per second? So the video will be 2 fps? I'm confused here. Very happy if you help. And please excuse me for my bad english.
