New Madagascar Trailer

It looks ok - but I prefer a smooth look to the charachters edge, rather than a jagged one.

I like the bit where they have that animal singing "I like to move it", it gives a warm atmosphere.

There is some really rotten animation in this. I am shocked too, considering the quality of animation in Shrek (1&2). There is almost a complete lack of weight when the characters move. The only characters that i like the way they move are the penguins, and their lack of weight is excusable, as they can get away with it.

Too bad... When I saw the designs originally, I was really looking forward to seeing this one.

Cheers

Hi Wade,

can you be a little more specific? Its a pretty vague analysis for a pretty weighty comment.

What character(s) bothered you and at what point?

Ta.
G.

ouch.

i disagree with you completely wade. in my book, moments of the animation rank up there with some of the best produced in CG.

but then, i would say that.....

Sure, mate, and let me say I love your avatar. Great film, that "See No Evil, Hear No Evil".

My comment was mostly regarding the lion character. Watch him as he is running toward the water, as that is the best example. Actually, I did not like a lot of the lion's animation in general. As well, I did not enjoy the dancing (the little rat/monkey/raccoon looking guy). The intent was good, but the character's bones seemed to be non-existent and he was very rubbery, whcih you can sometimes get away with and it can be very funny, but in 3D, it looks wierd.

The character acting though looks nice throughout.

Did you work on this, Gav? Just curious...

compared to sharktale, this movie is gold. I agree about some of the animation issues that Wade brought up, but the actual timing of some of those gags is great. I think this movie is going to do really well.

I wouldn't say it's an 'ouch' thing...more constructive. It's pretty easy to substantiate whether or not something feels like it has a visual weight, either by design as a visual element or being something more representational like a character running.

Whether or not it's true, though, I didn't have a problem with the way they moved, because regardless of the technical side it was far from horrifying to watch. We'll see if that keeps up for 90 minutes vs 90 seconds...

my ouch was in response to the following:

that said, i'm sure you will like it a bit more when you see it on the big screen, wade. promise!

Hi,

nope, i didn't work on it but i think i know a man who probably did - y'alright there Kev?! ;)

Thanks for clarifying your point Wade and although i can see where your coming from i suspect its more a choice of style over 'mistake'. I must admit i haven't been looking this forward to seeing an animated feature since the release of Ice Age.....ooh, that seems like a long time ago now.

Oh, and thanks! I'm a BIG Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder fan!! Two of the funniest men ever to have walked this wonderful planet...

G.

Suprisingly it looks better than Shrek or Shark tale to me.

i shall be chanting, "style over mistake" continuously from may onwards.

It's looking good Kevan. I can't wait to see it. I must say, this is the first PDI movie that I'm very much looking forward to seeing. I really like the sharp graphic look of the animals. I just wish Jeffery let them do it for the humans too, but oh well. The Penguins are still my favorite, and I think they move the best with this timing. I don't mind the snappy timing, but I don't think it works as well for the giraffe since he has sooo much ground to cover. But then it might all work on the big screen.

"I am shocked too, considering the quality of animation in Shrek (1&2)." I think that's funny, because I never felt Shrek 1 and 2 were animated that well in my oppinion. But that's just me. I could be wrong. I didn't like Lilo and Stitch either :D.

As for the weight, it bugs me, but I'm getting used to it. I always felt PDI had problems weighting their characters. Sorry Kevan. Also I wouldn't mind seeing some more artistic lighting choices rather than the very diffused lighting that they keep using. Once again, sorry Kevan. But I am really looking forward to seeing Madagascar. These are just little nit picky things.

Thanks for sharing Kevan.

Mahalo,
the Ape

...we must all face a choice, between what is right... and what is easy."

hey guys,

don't worry ape, i haven't taken anything to heart! it's cool to hear your comments. what with the rigours of production i sometimes forget that it's going to be seen by so many more people than just us!
i think that you'll really like the film when it hits the big screen. it certainly looks very different to everything else thus far, and i for one am happy with how it is shaping up.

woot!

The style is unique, I don't really see so much flaws there heck what is perfect? NOTHING! I am looking forward to seeing this movie. I guess we all have different tastes because I definitely like Shrek more than this but I probably can't tell until I get to see it.

I will still see it on the big screen.... Don't get me wrong. I was just a bit bothered by some of the character animation. I'll get over it though.

Still love the style of it... I do agree with the Ape in regards to the lighting. It could have been made much more dramatic...

And I really like tha animation of Shrek 1&2. ESPECIALLY the animation of the king and queen of far far away. Very believable stuff... Some of the best human CG animation I have ever seen, particularily in the facial animation. However, there are a lot fo places where I find that simple things like Shrek's walk cycle looked a bit too "formula"... Straight out of the Preston Blair book, but I got over it. I did not even LIKE Shrek 1 the first time I saw it, but then I gave it a second go, and loved it. Guess I just needed to get over the strange character designs.

Cheers

Design-wise it looks great. I love how they managed to get a jagged, UPA look into 3D animation. Noone else, not even PIXAR is doing that.

However, in terms of how entertaining it is has yet to be seen. I don't think any of us can fully judge it just based on this one trailer.
