"More Sex Than Me" Analysis

This is really interesting. I think it was Danimation who posted the "Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me" music video. Well it's finally out in Flash, and I've been meaning to look at that program that breaks SWFs into their respective elements to study truly interesting Flash animations. I just came upon the Flash version of "Bernard Derriman's" animation at a video website. Download (the Save Target As... way)

http://media.ebaumsworld.com/moresexthanme.swf

and use the Flash Decompiler demo

It should all take under a minute or two to download and install and load it in. Very conservative in terms of mouth shapes, tweens, etc. It's nice just to be able to scrub through it in one piece (some people didn't have access to it when it was QuickTime). But nice to see it for the trees. My favorite part is a head turn that is just magical but somehow only uses a few frames at the beginning and ending positions, but I -swear- you can see the transition stages. It's about a buck-forty into the song.

no sarcasm about the paper bag. That's always what I mistake his head for.

Haredevil,

Your Ideas are good and all, but he has gone ahead with the minimilist technique, and the ideas dont blend in with the whole concept. Its not intended to even be funny in that direct way.

The white background the little coloring, the constant same colors etc. All part of the effect he was going for.

Afterall he worked for Disney, I THINK he should know what hes doing.

Eisner worked for Disney too...

He's worked at Disney.

Yes, the animation is quite well done. But, content-wise it could have been better. The gradual close-up to the nose and another part where he just shouts and collapses were blatant filler techniques which helped the animator finish on time but left huge holes which screw-up the pacing and leave this work somewhat empty.

But, hey, if the guy had more time to work on it, maybe he could have polished it up and made it a little better. Who knows.

but he has gone ahead with the minimilist technique.

'kay, if I want to see GOOD minmilist technique, I'll watch my collection of Roadrunner cartoons.

The only reason this guy used the "minimilist technique" in this way is because a) he only had a short time to get it ready for the contest b) he was the only one working on it at EVERY stage of development.
If he at least had a whole crew working for him there would have been much more time to incorporate any of the ideas I mentioned (and any others like them).

But he didn't have a whole crew working for him Haredevil_Hare, so I don't know what you are complaining about.

i dunno haredevil, i dunno..
the way it is right now, it's making me want to see more, making me watch it more, making drool, smile and laugh out loud as it is...

whatever youcan make it to make it " better"....fine..
i just like it the way it is!

sometimes, i think the possibility of what it could be should stay just that .. a possibility... sometimes though, not al the times!

But he didn't have a whole crew working for him

I am aware of that. In fact, I stated that in my last post.

The crazy part is that I'm saying this video is good for only onelone guy working and only a short time to do it while some other people are simply saying it's good period. There are HUGE spaces with just cheap corner cutting filler that slow the whole thing down which has just been confused with minimalism.

When did our standards get this low?

For the education of less learned observers...what sort of parts? There's lack of effort, and then there's choosing not to do a great deal because one sees it as the best artistic decision (aka unnecessary). I'm actually asking, by the way, not defending anyone....

I personally feel it's always a good idea to do a whole lot, because I'm a perfectionist and it covers my bases... This may be the Mondrian of the animation world....saying what he has to with what seems like just not a lot going on...

It's not a paper bag. It is a balaclava. TISM (This Is Serious Mum), the really wrong band that did the music have worn balaclavas on stage for the last 20 years.

It is a balaclava.

Balaclava!!!!!!! You're Canadian aren't you?! (hey, so am I) Most Yanks would call that a "ski mask".

And I thought only Rednecks and Brits used that 'Y' word. I would call that a "someone trying to kill me" mask....ski masks separate the eyes, don't they?

Thank for the clarification! You know what's bad? Because I didn't know before that they were popular, I thought TISM was just a group of letters and that they knew they'd get appended to the web domain that they would (which is Australian if you're going by the video site)...

ie

blahblahblah . au / tism

I thought it was a joke on the word "autism"

No one's advertising anything and I did not take work apart. Until you pay ridiculous registration fees, the only functionality of the program is to view the sections independently instead of in their mixed down form. In the post I provided information on -how- it is I was able to examine the work in detail rather than explain myself later. No one's endorsing pirating or decompiling. It was a means to an end and I put emphasis on the software being used for an educational purpose only, and after I was done checking out his stuff I undeleted it because its actual use is irrelevant and nothing I care about.

I respect intellectual property, but nothing's being threatened here. If I said "Hey, everyone, chop up Bernard's work and make parodies! Bwahaha!" that's one thing. Because I have the ability to pause/rewind in some video players, does that change how people save out their MOVs? If artists never broke things down, tangibly or non, we'd be missing half the artists we have today and almost all of the understanding of how to use technical abilities to communicate our emotions visually.

For the education of less learned observers...what sort of parts?

I'm referring to the parts where the camera slowly trucks in to a close up of his nose and the part where he shouts away from the camera and then collapses. Both of those parts are just filler that eat up alot of time and do nothing to help this little film. THAT'S where many of the gags I suggested could have been used instead of that. Maybe if he hadn't spent so much time on getting the lip sync right he could've had ore time and materials to incorporate them.

Oh well, the films done. There's nothing he can do about it now.

tough room.

Great film - I just judged it in a contest

I am a judge in the TSGNTII animation contest (The Greatest Story Never Told).

This film was one of 40 I viewed online across several categories. The acting, the timing, everything was great. I really thought this was a great film.

One thing I don't like about it is that this rabbit seems to be just complaining about not getting any. The author should have included some of his attempts at getting some so that we the viewers could better understand his plight. He could have been flexing his muscles, buying drinks for women, or whatever all throught his video for example. Also, after showing us the #1 on his chest there could have been a quick truck in to his right hand with a number like 8,295,994 or something. He could also open his dresser drawer where his box of condoms is standing there impatiently tapping his foot and pointing to his watch or something. Then maybe we'd see a shot of his Teddy Bear with a #584 on it which the rabbit embarrassingly shoves out of sight. And, maybe a good end gag would have a pack of hillbilly rabbits (looking right out of Deliverance) sneak up on this main character. We'd then cut to his chest where the number would start rising 2,3,4,5,6,7................ etc.

All those things I mentioned (and anything like them) would have made this little video much funnier and develop this rabbit's character into something a little more than just an anonymous whiner.

But, like I said, if the guy had more time I'm sure he would have added those himself.

All those gags make sense (the last one is especially inventive) but I think they're out of style with his sense of what to show/reveal.

With all those swell ideas, Haredevil, you could make your own video.

He already has -- check out the signature. One of the better ones ever shared with the board.

Funny you should mention Bernard Derriman. I posted some stuff about him on my blog a couple months ago...

Bernard Derriman is an animator at Disney's Australia studio. He's worked on such films as Lady and the Tramp II and An Extremely Goofy Movie. He is also the animator and director for the series Arj and Poopy, which was created and is written by comedian Arj Barker. He also the director and animator of the award winning (and hilarious) music video "Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me" by Australian rockers TISM. Watch it.

He has a fun animated style.
:)

No, I saw that one. I meant the bunny stuff. :/

Oh god, a third page.

True Haredevil, for what it is, I think it's good. Will it replace the Incredibles as my favorite animated film? No. It won't even replace The Wrong Trousers as my favorite animated short. There are things in there I thing were good, and some things I think could've been better. I didn't really care for the lipsync, but I really like his acting, when he did some. But just because it was done by one person, on a limited time and budget, doesn't make it any less enjoyable for me. I actually enjoyed it much more than some feature animated films with huge million dollar budgets and hundreds of artists.

By the way, I really like the bunny playing the keyboard, but I always think he looks like a guy with a paper bag over his head with eye holes cut out. But thats just me :D

Forgive me for missing the sarcasm if it's there, but I thought that the guy with the paper bag over his head was indeed a paper-bag-headed guy.

I must have missed the previous thread with this in it, but this...is...brilliant! I laughed all the way through it. And the animation is really nice. Very snappy. I want to try to do something like this now.

Ender

It's funny that you said that because after the first time I watched it, I tried doing a "I am a squishy character smashing my head repeatedly on the ground" test...

Glad you got something out of the post =)

Thanks for the link, I have missed this one me too.
Very funny, and well done. All the notion of a good animation are present.

So are we going to have a choregraphy of

"I am a squishy character smashing my head repeatedly on the ground"

? :p

Most likely not. Time hasn't been abundant. But for what it's worth I -cannot- get that damned song outta my head today. lol

It's different!

Hello.

Actually, I appreciate the fact that didn't use obvious images to make thir point. I appreciate their retraint.

The one basic character was a great idea because the animation and energy could go into one image. IPRESSIVE.

Who did the animation?

I agree with Larry, it's inventive and clever and it's subtleness only makes it more humorous for doing it.

Larry, I put it in quotes in the first post so I didn't mean to throw you off; I didn't want to attribute to the wrong person. The intro says, accurately I know now, that Bernard Derriman is the animator. I Googled and on the first page found two AtomFilms by him. I love this style.

His films are on AtomFilms entirely, so far as I can tell, but arjandpoopy.com seems to be his main site, as a sort of wrapper.

Anyone else think he draws like Chuck Jones? It's uncanny!

Excellent job! That rabbit is adorable! The animation is awesome!

"Animation isn't about how well you draw, but how much to believe." -Glen Keane

Very nicely done. Great use of drawing and symbol based animation. Yeah, I thought the profile head looked very Chuck Jonesesque, too. I think it's that his pupils break the eyelines. I love the part where he's banging his head on the floor, and his little march towards the end. Great whipping action on his arms. And those poses at the end are awsome.

amazing

pay close attention to this clip....the damn rabbit blinks!!!! everything is SOO LIFELIKE....the motion is fluent and brilliant....the facial expressions are classic.......and teh song is great......impressive isnt the word

I am still downloading the file (being on dialup), but I have to give a word of warning about decompiling swfs, that's not something to advertise. As a Flash animator I don't go out of my way to protect my work, but to advertise that you took someone's work apart just isn't right. That makes more and more Flashers take steps that prevent the average user from being able to rewind or do anything as far as controlling their flash viewing.
