Shark Tale

I went to see Shark Tale today w/ the animation club. It was good. I love Oscar, he was animated beautifully. He was full of energy. I also love the jellifish's design. Their jelly heads were pretty. ^-^ The shorties were cute too. I think all of you guys should see Shark Tale, it was better than I thought it was. I can't wait for the Incredibles though O.O

Shark Tale Worst Reviewed 3D Animated Feature Ever

"Shark Tale," from the makers of such critically acclaimed 3-D animated features as "Shrek 2" and "Antz," is so far the worst-reviewed 3-D animated feature ever. With 68 reviews from major print and online critics so far, the film has received a very Rotten 31% percent on the Tomatometer - only 31% percent of the 68 critics gave it a recommendation. It also has an average rating of just 5.3/10. Overall, critics think that although the film is colorful and nice-looking, it's also shallow and generic, and relies too heavily on sight gags and humor based on inappropriate ethnic stereotypes. This critical dud ends Dreamworks' streak of well-reviewed 3-D animated features, which is an ominous sign for its box office prospects for the upcoming weekend.
Dreamworks' previous 3-D animated features - "Antz," "Shrek 2," and "Shrek" - were all critically acclaimed box office successes, with Tomatometer ratings of 97%, 90%, and 88%, respectively.
The previous worst-reviewed title holder is the critical and box office bomb "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within," which has a 44% on the Tomatometer. The best-reviewed 3-D animated features ever are Pixar's "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2," both of which have a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer.
Ranking of 3-D Animated Features by Tomatometer:
=====================================
1. Toy Story 2 (100%)
2. Toy Story (100%)
3. Finding Nemo (99%)
4. Antz (97%)
5. Monsters, Inc. (95%)
6. A Bug's Life (91%)
7. Shrek 2 (90%)
8. Shrek (88%)
9. Ice Age (77%)
10. Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (77%)
11. Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie (68%)
12. Dinosaur (62%)
13. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (44%)
14. Shark Tale (31%)

Those critics can shove their tomatometer ratings up their rear ends. I liked Shark Tale. :(

racial stereotypes

As far as the "stereotypes" go, I think it simply added to the film. I can only speak for Oscar and his "stereotype" since I am black, and I am familiar with the things Oscar said/did. First off, I want to say that I disagree with the use of stereotypes in Harvey's article. Not all black people use slang, and wear bling, but a lot of us do at least one of those things to some degree. Because of that I dont think stereotype is the right word to use, since that is something that we in fact do. I thought it was nice to see black mannerisms in a movie that didn't involve drugs, gangs, thugs, guns, and couples cheating on each other. I think black movies with all of those things I just listed were stereotypical. True, some of us do live like that, but films about black people shouldn't be about just that. I think Shark Tale was a very nice movie with a main character who was essancially black, but didn't act ghetto. So, including those black mannerisms in Oscar gave him more character, as well as showing "blackness" in a positive light.

Anyway, I still think you all should see Shark Tale, despite what the critics said. I've seen movies that I enjoyed but were given a bad rating by critics. Don't always listen to them, make a decision about the film yourselves. After you've seen the film, then you can go ahead and agree with articles like the one Harvey posted. You might even find that you like Shark Tale. Just give it a chance. :D

I just noticed something. That tomatometer thing gave Antz a higher rating then Shrek and Shrek 2! Ants was nowhere near as good as either of the Shrek films. That right there should tell you something about those critics...:p

I was a little stand offish because it looks like just what they say in the ad, " Finding Nemo with an urban spin" i dont really like movies that are similiar to another one. but if you say is good i guess i'll check it out. I also hear there's an animated version of Katie couric and christina aguilera as well, wonder what they'd look like down under the sea.

What would scooby do?

I thought the rasta jellyfish were inspired. Everything else about the movie was mediocre and the ending was downright awful...But worse than Final Fantasy? I don't know...

the ending

I agree that te ending was weak. I didn't like how passive the father shark was. I already mentioned how I felt about Lenny. I still think the movie was good though. ;)

I'm glad you enjoyed Shark Tale, Mew. However, I personally enjoyed Antz more than Shrek1 and Shrek2, so I guess quality is in the eyes of the viewer.

Like you, I've also seen enjoyable movies that were panned by the majority of critics, but they were never animated movies. Usually they're sci-fi or horror movies: genres that are often at their best when they're at their crappiest.

yeah

Yeah, you couldn't have said it better Harvey. ^-^

Eh...

It was an animated feature. Thats about all I have to say. I thought it was very un-original and relyed on cheap humor by taking quotes from other movies to get a laugh...

"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?"
"SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIENDS!"

I saw it and indeed did laugh...but overall when you look at such powerhouses such as Nemo or say Toy Story both of these films portray stories we have never seen before. Shark Tale was just too predictable. Man in the hood wants to be rich...tells a white lie...gets rich...becomes celeb...and then TRULY sees what he values most. seen it...

Overall its a good cheap laugh but I am looking for something more original with more thought with the storyline...incredibles maybe? We shall see.

I think the old agage is true in that there are a limited number of stories one can tell. You can boil down any story to its basics, and it will be similar to 10s, if not 100s of other works. example: A character(s) gets removed from its normal surrondings, and the story involves returning the misplaced character(s) back to their surrondings.
what follows this story line?
Finding Nemo
Toy Story
Monsters Inc.
not to mention live action flicks like The Big Lebowski and Half Baked, etc. etc.
