Question for the people @ SCAD

Hey everyone. I'm going to leave soon for SCADs orientation and I had a few questions.

1. I'll be bringing my laptop with me. I was wondering if I should bring my drawing tablet as well. Do the computer labs have drawing tablets already, or should I bring mine?

2. In the Dyson house rooms is there a line for people to use who access the internet with dail up? I read that the rooms have one phoneline, so I was wondering if I'd have to use that line and just get kicked off everytime someone tries to call.

3. Should I bring my scanner?

You should bring your drawing tablet if you want to use it in the dorms. The school has plenty of tablets at the labs and High speed internet in every dorm room (why on earth weould you weant a dial up line?) You'll probably be using the school desktops way more than your own laptop, as none of the systems staff will troubleshoot your personal machine.

There's also several scanners at Montgomery hall.

ok

Thanks a bunch Ender! I have another question. The rooms dont have a computer in the room, so in case i want to get online in my room I'd need my laptop. I have aol (>_<) and at home I use dial up. Wouldn't I have to get some kind of aol broad band upgrade (which costs more -.-) to use the internet in my room?

As long as your laptop has an ethernet port (looks lika big phone jack) you will be able to get online through the schools high speed network. They will give you instructions on how to do this, and help if you need it.

Ender

Yay!

Thanks Ender! No more aol dial up for me!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Yo Mew!

Welcome to SCAD! Along with my studies as an animator I am also an RA so I may run into you when you get here to check you in...well maybe not...I am in Boundary Village just a 3 minute walk down the street.

But anywhoo yeah ender nailed it every room has a high speed connection...its so fast you will cry the next time you use Dialup. And one more tip for ya!

Do as much work as you can OUTSIDE of your room and in the labs. The more you surround yourself with confident people who can critique your work and push you further along the better of an artist you shall become! Take advantage of what SCAD offers!

Look forward to meeting ya! Now its time for me to yet again continue with my RA training ...peace

Hey everyone...I'm leaving next week myself to start at SCAD in animation. I chose to go back to school full-time (this is my second bachelor's degree) rather than doing an online or self-directed study specifically for this one factor, being surrounded by other like-minded creative folk. Not only does it accelerate your technical skills, it also inspires you and gives you lots of ideas. Rule number one when you're going to say something (in this case, through animation), you'd better have something to say!

I'll be living off-campus myself, since I'm married and there's no married student housing available through the school...All the more reason for me to spend more time in the labs, since other than class that'll be really the only time I get much interaction with other students.

Hey SCAD folks, look for an article with me in it in the Sep 10th issue of The Campus Chronicle (www.thecampuschronicle.com). They're doing an article on my internship at Vinton Studios.

Welcome MightyMew!

I'm looking forward to (hopefully) meeting several of you on campus when classes start once again. (Welcome back to Savannah, ender - I'll be sure to check out your write-up in the Chronicle.)

This fall, I'm taking Patricia Beckman's graduate character animation class, and have also come up with an idea for my thesis (woot!), which I need to start fleshing out via a storyboard. The animation will involve Flash and Maya, and will be in 2D.

Well, back to lurk mode for me o_0

Any other SCAD students in getting together for dinner or something?

Each Room...

Hello.

Each room at SCAD has a bowling alley and a heliport. There is 24 hour room service and free donkey rides on Friday nights.

Actually, my son goes to scholl in NC. and compared to what I saw there... I can tell the SCAD rooms are sweet!

Send me an email... and we can talk.

Heh, that's funny that you mention that each room has a bowling alley. When I was living in the dorms there, there was this kid who would always skateboard on the sidealk in front of my room. It sounded exactly like there was a bowling alley in the room above mine.

The heliport was nowhere to be found though. :)

Note to the new students: If someone thinks that the sidewalk in front of your room is a great place for skateboard practice, throwing gravel down on the floor will usually solve the problem... not that I tested it or anything.

where is everyone

I've been here since last Friday and am now wondering one thing. Where are the upperclassmen animators? o.O All I see are frshman, like myself. I guess you guys are all hanging out at Montgomery. I want to go there this weekend, but I dont know if I'll have time, I've got homework already >_<. If I do get over there I dont really know what I'll do. I'll probably end up sitting @ a computer, working on my character model. Better to work on it there than in my room, lol. The other day I was @ O-house and heard some guys complaining about spending their day @ Montgomery. I was shocked. I wish I could spend my days at Montgomery  *grumbles about foundation classes even though they are important and neccisary* When I went to Ex Libris, I saw that I have many of the text books in the animation section. That made me proud, lol. :D My room mate (who also wants 2 major in animation) says I am obsessed since I have all of those books. I showed her the most recent version of my character's head in Maya, as well as the unfinished animation that Graphiteman helped me with a little while back, and she was blown away. Today I showed a new friend (who is also in animation) the same stuff and got the same reaction. That shocked me, as I thought people here would be as enthusiastic about learning to animate as I am...

Hello MMew

Hello Mighty Mew,

Welcome to Savannah!

Yes, folks do field trips all the time. I know folks will be going to see the Incredibles when it comes out Nov. 5th.

We also have a fair amount of animation at the Savannah International Film and Video Festival. Oct. 23rd- 30th. The schedule will be posted Oct. 1st. At this point in time Peter O'Toole, Kathleen Turner (voice of Jessica Rabbit) and director Norman Jewison will be here....and animator J.J. Siedelmann.

Seotember 29th, I will be hosting a night with IRON GIANT at O house.

Last night, Srattan Leopold spoke at Trustees Theater. Srattan is a producer and screenwriter whose credits include, SUM OF ALL FEARS, PAYCHECK, BARREN MUNCHAUSEN, etc.

Fall Quarter is a great animation term.

Thanks.

And to top it off, he has a great little ice cream shop right next to the theater!

I went to the talk, it was great and I'm looking forward to other guest lectures...

Thanks guys

Sounds great Larry! I missed the session on Saturday, but I'll mark my calendar for your Iron Giant night.

I'll be there this Thurs. You can hunt me out and say hi, my picture is on my web page so you can know what I look like...And since Larry has forbidden us to talk about class on the AWN forums I can't mention that I have him for "drawing for storyboarding" on Mon/Wed...

great!

I'll definatly be there! Look for the girl in the collar :P As far as visiting Monty, I'll try to get there this weekend, depends on how much hmwk I have. Is there a specific section of Monty that you guys hang out in? I hope I get to have Larry for my teacher some day! :D

shot down

I went to Monty today. I was all excited to be in the presence of my upperclassman fellow animator ppl! I sat at a computer and typed in my name/password......log in failed...

I went home with my tail between my legs. I was so close...:( *sigh* I guess I'll just have to be happy with working on my animation stuff in my room >_< Is it at all possable to get a class in Monty during one's first year?

On a positive note, I saw one of you guy's work on the screen outside. I forgot who posted the walk cycle for it, but it was te one with the red and blue trolls. I think it was called The Machine. I liked it! Much Ado About Breakfast started right when the bus came >_< I really wanted to see that :(

"Animation isn't about how well you draw, but how much to believe." -Glen Keane

Hmm...you might need a class before you can log into the machines here. Never fail if the technology does not serve you well you can always pick up a pencil and a ream of paper and sit at a light table!

As for your first year...yes...you can take classes here. I think the initial class would be something like survey of computer apps or something like that. Basically a freshmen oriented class about computer software ie photoshop, maya, illustrator etc.

But if you just want to get involved and meet some animators meet us Thursday night at 9 pm in the Turner confrence room for the Classical animation society...see ya there!

Rob is correct, if you are not taking classes *in* Monty Hall, you can't log in to the machines.

Hey, I was an animator on "The Machine"! We managed to get an honorable mention at SIGGRAPH's SPACE competition this year.

"Much Ado About Breakfast" was done by an associate of mine, Josh Burton. He's working on another project right now called "The Potter" which is going to blow us all clean out of the water.

Prepare.

Ender

excellent!

Rob, thats excellent! I cant wait to see my academic advisor! I MUST have a class in Monty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O.O I must surround myself with people who know at least as much as I do about animation!!! I am so tired of no one being able to help me with my stuff b/c they dont know how! :D Look out all you superiors already in Monty, next quarter (hopefully) I'll be joining you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O.O

I was inspired just by going to Monty. When I got back I got to work on my 2d design project which involves drawing shapes on 300 one inch squares. I did 35 frames of animation and transferred them onto their own squares. I know thats nothing to you senior animators, but that was the longest animation I have done so far. The whole thing came to me easily and smoothly. I was like o.O wow...if that happened from visiting Monty, imagine what will happen when I actually have class there! :D

Ender, I love the little otter (I guess it's an otter o.0) in Much Ado About Breakfast. He's so cute! I love his frustration. I think it was done very well, what I saw of it at least -.- The Machine was good, I imagine it'd be better with sound, lol. I didn't really get what it was about. I'm guessing the red troll made a machine that produced the flip book, and the blue troll didn't like it. Fill me in, if I'm wrong. ^-^

See you all at CAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Animation isn't about how well you draw, but how much to believe." -Glen Keane

ya know, its funny, the actual number of people that want to be *animators* at Montgomery seems a lot less this quarter. I only know a few people that want to do character animation, the rest are visual effects, lighting, rigging, etc. I was kind of suprised this quarter. About a year ago it seemed like everyone was a character animator.

*shrug* Won't stop me.

How do the labs in Montgomery work? I want to go in my spare time and learn to use Flash. Do the computers there have it installed? Do I need some sort of account to log in? How do I save my work?

Montgomery

I've only been to Montgomery once, and that was on SCAD day last fall. All I know is there are animation disks and computers EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D I finished my Drawing I assignment last night, so I am aiming to complete my 2d Design project today so I can go to Montgomery. I am eager to have people see my work who wont say "wow! You're good!" when I don't really know what I am doing (especially in 3d). I guess my stuff is impressive for someone with no training aside from reading books and reading threads here, lol. It'd be nice to get some real criticism (sp?) and to get some real time help.

Jprowland, getting together for dinner sounds fun. Sadly I miss meals alot thanks to the cafe's stupid meal hours. I'm also VERY shy...:(

Ender, I guess its good that there aren't a bunch of people trying to be "character animators". Less compitition and less garbage. :p

Is anyone in the Classical Animation Society? I put my name on their list during the Summer Swarm and I'll be at the meeting on Thursday...

Larry, have any of the animation teachers given their students an assignment to go to the movies to watch *insert animated film here* and to study that film's techniques or something? I thought that would be a good idea. I saw a commercial for The Incredibles and was blow away by the part where the little boy is running through the forest/jungle and trips on something and falls. The timing on that was spectacular! I was like O.O *must see that film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* Anyway, if none of the teachers have done that perhaps you could suggest it. That could be the field trip for that class. I know I wont be able to participate in that yet (if it happens), but once I'm done with these foundation classes I'd love to go to the movies for a class trip. Then we could analyze this and study that about the film. :D

"Animation isn't about how well you draw, but how much to believe." -Glen Keane

You pretty much nailed it. The little red guy, Dinsdale, makes a machine to produce animation and tells his big blue buddy Baazle about his idea to create a whole series of the machines and have them project pictures on a wall and make money by selling tickets to come watch it. Baazle thinks its a bad idea, but secretly thinks the little flipbook is cute. It was actually just a premise concept for a much longer piece involving more characters. We're all better at what we do now. Maybe someday we'll get back together and make the real thing. :D The guy that directed it went to Pixar and now I dunno what he's doing anymore.

Ender

wow

O.O ooooooooo, Pixar.... Thats a cute story, I'd like to see the full version of it. ^-^ Anyway, why aren't you at Pixar? -.O Surely they'd want at least one of the animators for The Machine since they liked it. :\ I remember when you posted the walk cycle for the red guy and a preview of the short, people were saying you should be able to get the position of character animator. I wish you luck! Keep up the good work! ^-^

"Animation isn't about how well you draw, but how much to believe." -Glen Keane

Alas, Pixar almost never hires actual character animators straight out of school. They usually get people with a bit more experience. They also look for people with very strong drawing skills, and mine aren't spectacular. That guy I was telling you about was an absolutely brilliant illustrator, which is what got him the position, really.

>_<

awwwwwww :( Well I hope a studio hires you soon, your work was very good. ^-^
