Anyone joining the Nicktoons Animation Festival?

http://www.animationmagazine.net/nicktoons.html

We are trying to wrap up our entry as we speak ... is anyone else joining?

Wow! Sounds exciting! Do you know if animators from the UK can join?

Yes, I've entered. I submitted my Frog and Princess short. I'm really excited about it, but I'm also very anxious. They said that they're only going to contact you if your work is selected.

And yes, Amy, animators from any location can join. Your work just has to follow the guidelines on their rules and regulations form. Their faq's page is also very helpful. But if your going to submit something, you have to do it soon. The deadline for entries is Sept 10.

Hmmm....I'll have to find out how long it'll take to send a dvd to the USA from England. Thanks

Where are you from Sharvonique?

Hi Amy,

I'm from the USA - the state of Maryland to be exact.

Hi, I think I might enter as well...if I can send it in time. Which additional materials did you guys send? I think that sending a video clip of myself would be a bit too weird! lol :)

Yeah, I felt the same way about the video tape thing. ;)

But I did send in a quicktime version of my animation on a CD-R, my biography, a list of credits, 4 stills from my cartoon, and a photo of myself. I submitted the bio and credit list in paper form, and included the pictures on the same CD with my movie. Of course, I also sent the entry form and festival agreement form.

I think that you should enter your animation. Send it using some form of express shipping, anything that will guarantee delivery in 2-4 days. That way it should get over here in time, and you will have a means to track your package to see when it's delivered. I was told that they will not contact you to let you know that they received your entry. They'll only contact you if your work is selected.

Let me know if you do decide to enter. We can cheer for each other, and xngo too if the animation is completed in time! :D
Besides, what do you have to loose?

Thanks for your help. I'm wondering about the photo's though. It says to send them on a Mac formatted CD...does that mean the CD has to be created on a Mac? I only have PC's.

I am (if entering) submitting my entry on a DVD, as a video will not play in the USA, so I don't think that I can put my additional material onto the DVD with my movie.

Good luck, you guys! I'll let you know if I manage to enter in time. :)

I also have a PC, so I think they just want to be able to open up the pictures on their Mac's. I didn't do anything to my CD when I burned it. I just saved my photos as TIFF files set to 300dpi. That way they shouldn't have any problems viewing them since TIFF's are compatible on both PC's and Mac's.

Don't worry about putting your photos on the DVD. Just submit a separate CD with all that other stuff on it. By the way, is your DVD region free?

Thanks. I don't know if there will be a problem with the region. I'm making the DVD at home and thought that most computers could read different regions. I'll have to look it to it.

quite an enthusiastic crowd it seems :D

looking forward to see everybody's shorts in the festival.
ours will be a spin-off of in-house webisode characters we are working on

Dang!

DANG! I'm too young :( It says 18 and older. I'm only 15. Well maybe in a few years *sigh*.

:( Doesn't look like I can enter, guys! I spent all day trying to write MOVs to DVD and they wouldn't play. Got my graduation tomorrow so I'll miss the post. Good luck, you two!

well i might be entering a shot ive been working on called Big Foots son but im not sure ill be done in time :P

well best of luck to all of you who entered :D

good news!

Hi guys ...
Please check again the Nicktoons Film Festival site (http://www.animationmagazine.net/nicktoons.html) ... they have extended the deadline to Oct 1st for Quicktime users!

oh joy... hope more of you can enter this time

Cool! Thanks for letting us know! :D The rules and regulations have not been updated though. I assume its just the same but they have given some extra time as they have not recieved as many entries as they were expecting?

posibly... i figured some animators might be detured from nickalodeon due to their content and slight stupidity rating... (shows humor found at sheer stupity ie sponge bob)

I like Sponge Bob! Guess I don't mind the humour so much as I am young :D

well its all apart of peoples different sence of humor ive met people who would rather catch on fire than sit through an episode. infact my mother almost forbids it to be on when she is working or at dinner time. myself its rather anoying.

i remember the younger days, doug, clarisa explains it all, you know stuff with morals not senceless stupidity but oh well. probably one reason why i watch less than an hour of tv a week

Hi Guys,

Didn't mean to just disappear like that but I was preparing for my graduation and my trip to the CINEME festival in Chicago. My graduation was Thursday, I left for my trip on Friday, and I returned yesterday.

Anyway, congrats on your graduation too, Amy! Are you going to submit something since the deadline has been extended?

Spooze, there are festivals that cater to 18 and younger. A good one for you to consider is the Chicago International Children's Film Festival http://www.cicff.org/. They're not accepting submissions at the moment, but there are other festivals that don't have any age restrictions.

Also Chason, that was pretty funny what you said about Nickelodean and SpongeBob. I couldn't stand to watch the show myself in the beginning, but now I'm hooked on it. Believe it or not, the show still teaches morals about friendship, believing in yourself and such, it just does it using a lot of silly slapstick humor.

Good luck xngo and to everyone else who entered. If you have any news about the festival or your work is selected, be sure to post it! :D

Welcome back!

I was going to enter the competition but I was told that it had only been extended for readers of the Quicktime newsletter, so I don't think I can enter.

Congrats on graduating! :)

Thanks amy!

I'm also sorry to hear you're not entering, but I still wish you the best! ;)

If you're interested, you can see the short I entered on my website http://www.sharvonique.com/

Just click on the projects link, then the frog & princess thumbnail, then the watch sublink. I'm still working on my site, so I hope it doesn't take a long time to download, or that you don't get lost in the navigation.

Nicktoons participation?

I was kind of surprised at how little chatter there was about this event (on the 3 or so discussion forums I stop by anyway). I remember the Fox Pitch-o-Rama deal was discussed all over (and was sort of controversial; i.e. "...was Fox just trying to steal ideas?"...).

Maybe a low turnout will increase the odds of getting selected? The deadline extension might indicate that they were getting a small response.

I submitted two shorts; one at the last minute for the first deadline, and then another at the last minute for the extended deadline. Here's hoping, anyway--ted

Ted Nunes - www.tedtoons.com

Hello All

This is my first post on this forum. I checked the Nick Toon site today. The festival is now on the programming schedule at 10:00 pm Eastern US Time.

Since I'm new to this forum, I would like to ask what types of animation programs the other festival competitors are using? Are you using Flash, Lightwave, or other programs to make your animation?

Has anyone out there been notified that their animation will be used?

Hasdrubal

Hi Hasdrubal,

I used a mix of Flash, Illustrator, and After Effects for my entry, but I don't only work with these programs. I pretty much use a mix of things to tell my stories. I'm currently working on another animation that will use Maya, because I think the story would be best told using 3D.

And no, I haven't been contacted. :(
Hopefully they're still reviewing the submissions since they extended the deadline, but it's only 11 days left until the air date. They haven't posted any entries on their "Meet the Filmmakers" section yet, so maybe there's still hope. :p

I hope they get the "Meet the Film Makers" page up some time before the first air date. The "coming in September" note, and the deadline extension have made me wonder if the organizers were having some setbacks that were not in their original plans.

Since I don't have cable or satellite, I'll have to talk a friend into allowing me to watch the show at his place.

some selections

I've seen two announcements of shorts being selected for this thing, but one was on the animators' site and the other was a local online newspaper--nothing updated on the Nicktoon's site (and nothing in my mailbox...so WAAAHHHH!).

No one from around this forum get anything in?--ted

Ted Nunes - www.tedtoons.com

I think I found the same articles. The animation was about a character named Timmy who meets several animals in the forrest.

I don't have cable, and none of my freinds or relatives get the Nicktoons channel. On the slim and unlikely chance that my entry has slipped into the festival, can one of you folks tell me if you see a piece of 3-D with characters named Power Ducky or Dr. Freak?

Spoke too soon...Nicktoons's site has announcement

Ted Nunes - www.tedtoons.com

Now that was fast. Could someone have been reading this thread?

Hmmmmmmmm?

I bet they posted it after taking the tall trash can full of disks out to the curb.

Bummer...I guess this confirms that my short wasn't selected.

Oh well, c'est la vie. Although, I am surprised that many of the selections appear to be works from established animators and studios. I kind of thought that they would be looking more for "undiscovered" talent.

There's 12 more shows. There could still be a chance..... I guess. I like the fact they aren't picking a lot of overly pretensious artsy trash the way the big animation festivals do.

I thought they would have a preference for artists from established studios. The request for personal videos, and the business/journalism backgrounds of the selection committe members suggested it to me. Business people would usually want to see your resume or biography first, and your toons second.

That's a very good point. I also wouldn't expect them to select "artsy trash" either because I think they're looking for stuff with commercial value, something that they could possibly turn into a series. It is Nickelodean after all. I guess I was just hoping to see more independents like myself, with limited resources but a lot creativity. People who are struggling artists. Not necessarily people with the backing of a studio's resources or finances. But like you said, there are 12 more shows. So maybe I'm speaking too soon.

yeah mine didn't go in either :D

not to worry there's still plenty of competitions around ...

Was the show they ran tonight very funny?

I want to join-is it too late?

Unfortunately bill, it is too late to submit. But this is suppossed to be an annual festival, so you should be able to submit next year.

And oddly enough Hasdrubal, I missed the show. I'll try to catch the next one.

I read the festival page for this week.

They have finally admitted to using established studio cartoons, as they have been doing all along.

There was no point in spinning the festival as a contest for new talent when established artists and grad students from the big film schools are the only entries accepted. The festival seems like a bogus attempt at reality show programming. I hope the selection committiee will play at least a few toons that ordinary people have made on their home computers.
