what media players are most popular?

For example if i wanted to upload some animated shorts on my website what format would be the best to use? -

Real Player
Quicktime
Windows Media player

Which is the most popular in your opinion? Anyone dislike any of those?

For me; quicktime (with codec Sorenson3) is the best for web.

Quicktime is good because most people have it, but a DivX avi makes smaller, better looking files but you'll probably run into more compatibility issues.

yes, i do use Divx and xvid but i was just going for the most used players,
to see what the best was.

Everyone has quicktime and most people have Windows Media Player. The DIVX codec has to be downloaded, but has great compression, as does the mpeg 4 codec for Quicktime, which gives better compression and smaller file sizes than sorenson for quicktime format.

Real is a joke, don't bother.

QuickTime + mpeg4 = :D

I believe if you encode for Windows Media Player you cover everyone with a PC. Quicktime covers the Mac World.

Cheers.

But, as far as I know, it's much easier to play a MOV file on a PC than playing an AVI on a Mac. If you install Quicktime on a Windows system, it will play all MOVs in the world. But try opening a DIV-X AVI on a Mac's Quicktime... ~:|

Hi Daniel,

The only thing is Windows Media Player comes with the Windows OS. So we (www.streamworks.ca) think it is a must to encode for this format. We encode for Quiicktime when requested to by clients and sometimes out of respect for Apple users who may make up a large part of a particular projects target group.

In the end it's all a matter of choosing wether you're giving people what they want or what they need. Like everything else in life... :)
