Magikano: The Complete Series

Admittedly, this kind of anime is either hit or miss for me. Sure they come loaded with fan service. Hey, who doesn’t like a schoolgirl skirt? And Magikano boasts “jiggling gobs of fan service.”

2009 TV Series (episodes 1-13). Director: Seiji Kishi. 325 minutes. DVD, bilingual, $49.98. Distributor: Funimation.

Magikano

Haruo Yoshikawa is not an exciting guy. In fact, the only thing he excels at is being average! School, family, social life, it’s all one big daily rut. Nevertheless – in true anime style – all that comes to a screeching halt when Ayumi comes riding into town on her broom. Yes, I said broom! This Lolita is a witch. And she’s determined to turn Haruo’s life upside down. After all, his three sisters have been keeping a big secret. They’re witches too, and Haruo has an inner power yet to be tapped. And Ayumi is definitely on a mission to tap it! That’s right, she wants to make him a “real man.”

Magikano sets up the usual teenage comic scenario: one boy and a bevy of crazy chicks! So, it takes its rightful place alongside anime such as Love Hina, Negima, and Ah! My Goddess. If you’re fan of those titles, this series is for you.

Admittedly, this kind of anime is either hit or miss for me. Sure they come loaded with fan service. Hey, who doesn’t like a schoolgirl skirt? And Magikano boasts “jiggling gobs of fan service.” But I need a little more than just a pair of playfully exposed white panties. Thankfully Magikano fully embraces its hilarious being.

The impossibly comic world of Haruo Yoshikawa is just too damn funny! This poor kid is not just dodging magic spells and a horny witch, but he has to deal with botched time traveling adventures, bullies, hilarious gay fashionistas, a school president that doesn’t know how hot she is, and three sisters intent on keeping him virginal. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that Ayumi just happens to be the Yoshikawa’s new live-in maid, complete with outfit. What is a high school boy to do?

Ah anime, how I adore you!

Anyway, Magikano will definitely tickle your funny bone – pun intended!
