Animation First 2023 - Fri, Jan 27 through Sun, Jan 29
FIAF is delighted to present the sixth edition of Animation First, the only U.S. festival dedicated to showcasing the legacy and innovation of French animation!
Curated by Delphine Selles-Alvarez, FIAF Film Curator, and Chloé Dheu, FIAF Film Coordinator, the 2023 program will comprise seven feature-length films (including four U.S. and three NY premieres), six short film programs with over 65 new shorts (including eight U.S. and 12 NY premieres), filmmaker conversations, “Work in Progress” presentations, a selection of video games and AR-VR experiences, an exhibition of Jean-Jacques Sempé’s iconic works, the third annual US & French Students Short Film Competition, the first ever Animation Jam, and more. This year’s Guest of Honor is Anca Damian, an award-winning screenwriter and one of the most creative filmmakers working today.

On opening night, Fri, Jan 27, we celebrate artist Jean-Jacques Sempé with the FIAF Gallery exhibition, Signature Sempé, and the NY premiere of Little Nicholas - Happy as can be, a charming retelling of Sempé's and René Goscinny's lives that co-exist within the fictitious adventures of Le Petit Nicolas, the character they created. The evening concludes with a program of notable short films, Best of Annecy 2022.
On Sat, Jan 28 & Sun, Jan 29, we present six more feature films (4 US and 2 NY premieres) as well as programs of shorts, a conversation with guest of honor Anca Damian, "Work in Progress" presentations, a panel discussion on Sempé and Le Petit Nicolas, video games, and AR-VR experiences.
