Dinotopia: The Series Wins Bronze Medal at New York festivals

An episode of the fantasy series DINOTOPIA has won a Bronze World Medal in the 'Action/Adventure' category at the International Film & Video Awards, part of the New York festivals. The awards were presented on January 30, 2004 along with the Television Programming and Promotions Awards. Framestore CFC created the digital VFX for the episode.

Disney Leads Golden Reel Noms

The Walt Disney Co. has garnered many of the top sound editing nominations in the 2003 GOLDEN REEL awards doled out by t he Motion Picture Sound Editors. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN is the only feature film to receive three noms while its animated features, BROTHER BEAR, FINDING NEMO and JUNGLE BOOK 2 each received two.

The seventh annual East Lansing Children's Film Festival has announced the winners of the 2004 Youth Film Competition.

King Lords Over Golden Globes

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING was crowned victorious at the 2004 Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 25, 2004. The final installment in the RINGS trilogy won the top drama prize for Best Film along with Best Director (Peter Jackson), Best Original Score (Howard Shore) and Best Original Song (Howard Shore, Fran Walsh and Annie Lennox).

Sundance Awards Prizes To Two Toons

The Sundance Film Festival concluded on Jan. 25, 2004 and handed out prizes to two animated shorts. HARVIE KRUMPET, directed by Adam Elliot, took home an honorable mention from the Shorts Jury. The 2004 Sundance Online Film Festival Viewers Awards for Animation went to BATHTIME IN CLERKENWELL, directed by Alex Budovsky. BATHTIME appears on the newly-released, animated shorts DVD collection, AVOID EYE CONTACT.

First BBC Four World Cinema Award Goes to Triplets

On Jan. 25, 2004, BBC Four handled out its first World Cinema Award for best foreign-language film released in the past year in the U.K. The French animated film, TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE, directed by first-time feature director Sylvain Chomet, beat out all other contenders, including Hayao Miyazaki's SPIRITED AWAY, to take home the prize. The other nominees included live-action flicks: CITY OF GOD, TO BE AND TO HAVE, GOOD BYE, LENIN! and THE MAN WITHOUT A PAST.

Big Chip Award Goes to Dr. Who

The 6th annual Big Chip Awards, the digital awards for North-West England, were handed out on Jan. 22, 2004 at the New Century Hall New Century House in Manchester. Cosgrove Hall took home the prize for Best Digital Animation for DOCTOR WHO: The Scream of the Shalka commissioned by and produced for BBCi. The 85-minute series is available to watch on the BBCi Website (www.bbc.co.uk/cult) and was produced to coincide with the Doctors 40th Anniversary.

Triplets Takes Three Cesar Nominations

Known in the States as the "French Oscars" -- the Cesar nominations were announced on Jan. 23, 2004. TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE received three nominations for Best French Film, Best First Film and Best Original Music. American live-action spectacle GANGS OF NEW YORK nabbed a Best Foreign Film nomination. The awards ceremony will be held in Paris on Feb. 21, 2004.

Nick Announces Kids Choice Nods

Nickelodeon has announced the nominees for 17th Annual Kids' Choice Awards, which will be hosted by previous Kids' Choice winners Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz. The event will take place April 3, 2004 from 8:00 - 9:30 pm. Topping the list of nominees was FINDING NEMO with three nods for Favorite Movie, Favorite Voice from an Animated Movie (Ellen DeGeneres) and Favorite Video Game.

The Simpsons Top WGA Animation Nominations

The Writers Guild of America, East and West have announced the nominations for outstanding achievement in television writing during the 2003 season. The big animation winner was THE SIMPSONS with three scripts nominated including Matt Selman for "The Dad Who Knew Too Little," J. Stewart Burns for "Moe Baby Blues" and Michael Price for "My Mother The Carjacker." FOX series weren't finished with THE SIMPSONS though. Tony Gama-Lobo and Rebecca May received nods for KING OF THE HILL's "Reborn To Be Wild" and Patric M.

ZBrush 1.5 Receives Game Developer's "2003 Front Line Award"

Pixologic's ZBrush 1.5 software received GAME DEVELOPER magazine's sixth annual Front Line Award for Excellence and Innovation in Tools for Game Development. Selected by a panel of industry-leading game developers, ZBrush 1.5 receives this award in the art category based on criteria such as utility, innovation, value and ease of use.

Nominees for 2004 VES Awards Announced

The Visual Effects Society (VES) has announced the nominations for its 2004 VES Awards.

VES membership viewing of the nominees and voting will take place on Feb. 7. Winners will be announced at the second annual VES Awards event on Feb.18 at the Hollywood Palladium. The evening will be highlighted by the presentation of the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award to George Lucas. Making the presentation will be Academy Award-winning director James Cameron.

Lasseter to Receive Honorary Art Directors Guild Award

In anticipation of FINDING NEMO's upcoming awards blitz, the Art Directors Guild will honor Pixar's John Lasseter with its coveted honorary Contribution to Cinematic Imagery Award at a Feb. 14 ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

BBC Announces Talent New Animation Award Winner

The BBC has announced the winner of the BBC Talent New Animation Award. The overall winning animation prize went to HOBBIES by Nick Mackie and Pete Avery. As a result, Mackie and Avery will produce a series based on their idea for broadcast on BBC Three. The five remaining finalists included Rich Webber's GOOSEBERRY, Brian Mung's MUNG, Phillip Beglan's THE SISTERS, Adam Crowley's SPAMTON and Brian Demoskoff's WILDFOWL. All the finalists will have their shorts broadcast on BBC Three.

Scientific and Technical Achievement Honors and Oscars Announced

The first Oscars awards of the season have been decided as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced recipients of this years scientific and technical achievement awards to be presented at a gala black tie dinner on the evening of Feb. 14, 2004, at the Ritz Carlton Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, California.

Digidesign, a leading manufacturer of computer-based digital audio production systems, will receive an Oscar for the creation and development of the Pro Tools digital audio workstation.

LA Critics Bestow Multiple Honors on Triplets, Splendor, Rings

On Jan. 7, 2004, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) announced its 2003 awards, which will be handed out Jan. 26 at the St. Regis Hotel in Los Angeles. Comic book-inspired indie AMERICAN SPLENDOR received top honors as Best Picture of the Year. As well, Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini were awarded Best Screenplay for the film they also directed. In animation, TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE garnered Best Animation, in addition to Best Music/ Score for Benoit Charest and Mathieu Chedid.

Cameron to Present Lifetime Achievement Award to George Lucas at VES Awards

Academy Award-winning director James Cameron will present the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the Visual Effects Society (VES) to George Lucas at the 2004 VES Awards ceremony.

Cameron, acclaimed director of such visual effects powerhouses as TITANIC, ALIENS, THE ABYSS and the first two films of the TERMINATOR trilogy, will be a featured presenter at the second annual VES awards event which will be held at the Hollywood Palladium on Feb. 18, 2004.

Academy to Present Bonner Medal to Greenfield

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has voted to award Douglas Greenfield the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation. The medal will be presented during the Scientific and Technical Awards dinner at The Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel in Pasadena on Feb. 14, 2004.

Greenfield will receive the Bonner Medal for his longstanding support of and service to the Academy and the motion picture industry.

Peter Jackson (THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING) appears to be the leading contender among the five DGA nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2003. The other nominees, announced by Directors Guild of America President Michael Apted, are: Sophia Coppola (LOST IN TRANSLATION), Clint Eastwood (MYSTIC RIVER), Gary Ross (SEABISCUIT) and Peter Weir (MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD).
